My favourite thing about these rants is where they claim Apple is forcing them to upgrade. What? How? Your iPhone 15 Pro Max is still perfectly fine, better in fact than almost any other model previous because it supports Apple Intelligence so it’ll survive even longer when AI gets actually good and not a gimmick.

Hi there,
I bought a brand-new iPhone 15 ProMax back in November 2023 for around $1,380, and now, in May 2025, it is only valued at $630. This is absolutely ridiculous.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my iPhone 15 ProMax, but a devaluation of more than 50% in just 18 months is just not acceptable.
Apple, with their annual and permanent releases of new devices is forcing customers to permanently purchasing new iPhones and Macs almost every year.
The iPhone 15 Plus is still available at the Mac Store, not so all the Pro models.
Maybe this will be my last iPhone Pro model I ever purchased.
My Apple History:
Since the release of the original iPhone back in 2007 I only used iPhones.
Since 1993 I exclusively used Macs, notebooks and desktops, iMacs.
But I am really getting tired of all their insane and greedy product upgrade strategy.
Good luck to all of you - and choose wisely.
I'm unclear about this.
Are you expecting them to appreciate in value?
What's an "acceptable" amount of value lost?
Has the functionality of the phone changed at all?
Why does it matter that the phone you're currently using isn't valued more as a trade in?

The value of the phone is not in resale but in actual usefulness for your lifestyle, job or else. An iPhone is a tool, use it until it serves you and replace when you feel it doesn’t. Still cannot find a single reason to upgrade my iPhone 11 Pro, apart from better cameras. Same apps, almost same speed, few new options that I would rarely use… basically that’s it. At this point I dunno, as you pointed out 1200€+ for a new phone is still 1200€+…

Came here to say basically the same thing. A tech device is not a wise investment if you expect it to appreciate in monetary value, because this almost never happens with anything designed to be used. An iPhone's price on the secondary market is always based on expected usefulness for the prospective buyer's purposes, and this always goes down over time as the next iPhone is released, batteries and other components accumulate wear, the "cool factor" wears off as it's not the new hot thing, etc. I wouldn't buy my iPhones if I needed them to maintain value when I sell or trade them. I buy the phone that will meet my needs for the next few years, and consider every dollar I spent on it already gone. If I decide to sell it later, that's "bonus" money.

Sometimes the best buy in tech is to get last years model new and when it’s discounted. You’re then getting the price reduction and any discount.

Sure some people like the newest model and maybe there will be a feature you may like. But for a phone most of the essentials are there even for a 5 year old model 😆

When I buy a phone or a car I basically know it stands a chance to lose all of its value. It’s value can only go down unless it is some sort of low volume collectable item.

If I upgrade to a 17 Pro Max later this year my 15 Pro Max will simply go to my Mom who currently has a 13 Pro Max, I have no plan on getting money for my 15 Pro Max.

I will continue to buy what I want so long as I can afford it and I am happy with what it brings feature-wise.

Most of us know that value of tech will only drop and sometimes drop more than you owe. It's called an upside down loan. If one has not learned that since 1993 then I have nothing more to say.

Wait for a carrier trade-in deal. Those are generally much better.
This is what I've been doing for a while. Verizon throws me a large amount of new phone credit in exchange for me letting them charge me a fortune for cell service for 24 or 36 months. I might actually get off the treadmill this next time, though, and do something less exhorbitant.

never ever buy a new car ...

No-one is forcing customers to buy new equipment every year, that's your own doing ...

That is absolutely normal for iPhones....

I purchased my new 14 Plus 512 GB just 14 months after the model hit the market 2 months after the 15 Plus was available - and payed even lass than 50% of its official price when it just enterd the market... for a brand new 14 Plus from an official apple dealer.

I dont want to be a early adopter - because eraly adopters pay a lot just for being an early adopter...
This is an economic law for every product of whatever type it may be...

Those who are a little bit more patient enough spare a lot of money while purchasing exactly the same product. as the "early adopters"...

How is it ridiculous? That’s literally how market forces work. Also I assume you’re using the trade in price? If you sell private party you might be able to justify a higher price. Trade in will never give you retail value.

If you're buying brand new high end tech on finance you are making a huge mistake.

You're likely paying exorbitant interest rate on a rapidly depreciating device.

Unless it is literally required as a tool for earning you money, buy what you can afford up front. If you can't afford to buy a high end iPhone today, don't think you'll be able to any time soon and there is no pressing business need or employment requirement for the high end device, financing it is NOT the answer.

Well not unless you like being poor.

Oh I love this thread. Troll + poor financial modelling.

You don't get a return on a luxury $1300 phone until you've had it for a few years (5-6 years at least). Consider that at around $19 a month inc low resale value. If you sell it after 18 months for $630 it cost you $55 a month over the time you own it. If you had to buy it on credit then that is a damage multiplier on top of that.

A friend of mine always gets a new basic iPhone every 2 years from their carrier religiously. For approx $18 a month more then she pays for the one phone, including carrier fees, I have an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 15 and iPhone 13 in service across the family.

S23 series/ultra is going for far less than that. It could be worse!
Pixel 8s are going for even less
I am a big fan of Pixel phones but after 2 years they have almost no monetary value left at all, its really bad. Its one of the reasons I switched to iphone as they have the best trade in values in the US of any phone on the market that I know of.

My son had an S21 that cost $800 to buy, after 3 years it was worth $70 on trade in. Clearly Android does even worse for trade in values so I'm not complaining about iphone trade in amounts.
