Same issue here. 2022 BMW with surface charger. I set my week old iPhone 15pro on the charger and when I removed it the screen turned white and I had to wait about and hour for it to reboot. The message said something about emergency restore. Then the Apple Pay stopped working. I was issued a replacement from apple yesterday due to them not being able to fix this issue. Apple’s Genius Bar stated “ ran diagnostics Mobile Resource Inspector (Diagnostics) determined issues with Apple Pay sensor.”

I am traveling and received a brand new BMW X5 rental car and made the mistake of putting my 15 Pro on the wireless charger and within a few minutes it locked up completely. Now I get the white screen attempting data recovery and cannot even reset the phone without it freezing in the process.

Far away from Apple Store and stuck

It can take an hour or more to restore from iCloud, depending on how much data you had stored and your signal strength.

I wonder if this brick effect are spread on all brands?
For now, on my EQS no issues, after 3 days, but now im wondering since the tech is probably the same on all cars

I’ve only seen X5s mentioned so far. I have a 23 X3 and no problems so far with a launch day 15 Pro. Always use the wireless charger and have the BMW key card loaded.

Just a side note for something I found: According to BMWs documentation, a Pro Max phone exceeds the allowable size for the wireless charger.:oops: It seems that these reports are all standard 15Pros, though.

https://www.bmwx5info.com/wireless_charging_tray-1842.html

Inserting the mobile phone

The mobile phone must not exceed the maximum size of approximately 6.0 x 3.1 x 0.7 in/154.5 x 80 x 18 mm.”

Pro Max is 6.29 x 3.02 in

2023 X1 here and no issues with 15 Pro since release day. I'll stop using my wireless charger for now until I read more though.

2023 Toyota Supra here (BMW parts including, I assume, the wireless charger).

My 15 Pro did exactly this and upon reaching out to support, they ran a diagnostic and found the Apple Pay chip to be broken as well. I have an appointment on Friday to hopefully get a replacement.

  • BMW X5 50e ("2024" model, brandnew, 3 weeks old)
  • iPhone 15 Pro 1TB
Same issue here: Charged my new iPhone 15Pro wirelessly in car during a 45min commute. When exiting the car, the digital key locked the car, and 2 seconds thereafter there was the "Issue with Apple Pay". Digital Key did not work anymore (car was locked and I was away from home with no spare key on me ...). Called Apple support. They run diagnostics and determined a "hardware issue with the Apple Pay sensor". Got a new iPhone via Apple Care+ quick replacement, but will not use the wireless charger in the car again, until this issue is fixed.

Having read the other posts, I can share the following observations (don't know if of relevance, though):
  • my iPhone 15 Pro got really hot during wireless charging (much hotter than the 14 Pro in my old BMW - 5series station wagon 2017 model)
  • the Digital Key always activated when putting the iPhone in the wireless charging tray

So it seems only 15 P/PM are affected, but international versions as well. Do 15 and 15 Pro have different NFC chips?

White iPhone 15 Pro 256 GB
2024 BMW X7 40i

It's killed two phones so far before we realized that it was/is the culprit.

iPhone 15 Pro (Australia)
BMW i4 (1 week old)

Same problem. Used my 11 Pro in a 2020 X5 without issue. And like others have noticed that my 15pro got very hot wirelessly charging in either car.

FYI, there is no indication that the recently released iOS 17.0.3 addresses this issue. Continue to use wireless charging at your own risk.

If anyone does happen to get the Apple Pay error message after wireless charging in a vehicle, please post your phone model, make and model of vehicle, and iOS version (including beta).
