Any news from your BMW dealers or Apple?

I used to have my digital key on my previous iPhone 13 pro and since I've bought an iPhone 15 pro max, I'm affraid to setup this digital key (you need to put the phone on the charging tray to proceed...).

FYI, my setup: BMW X6 2023 middle east + iPhone 15 Pro Max

I have been in communication with Apple and they are also monitoring this thread. They’re investigating this issue specifically but have yet to hear a resolution from then.

This must not be very widespread—- barely seen any new reports about this for the past couple weeks

Yeah, I said F it. Started using the charger again. If it breaks, that'll be another data point for BMW and Apple...but I'm not convinced this is a huge widespread issue anymore. Really makes me wonder about those folks that have had multiple failures with new phones.

The likely reason for no new reports is because iPhone owners are choosing to not use the charging pads until Apple/BMW address this issue. I can tell you from personal experience that spending hours in an Apple Store exchanging a phone and doing a phone to phone transfer isn't something most people want to do more than once.

I’m sure that’s true for a small number of people, but it’s not like every single BMW owner is going to know about this and stop wireless charging

I can confirm that this has happened to me twice on iPhone Pro 15s--and I own a 2023 BMW M240i with wireless charging tray. The first time it happened the day after the phone went on sale (9/23), so obviously no one knew it was tied to BMWs at that point. So I went to an Apple Store and they swapped it for me. Now it happened to me again today while I was driving to work and the phone was in the charging tray. Luckily I had my physical key in my backpack because I couldn't use the digital key on the phone to relock the car (or start it). Car charger was fine for months with my iPhone 12 mini.

Wife has a 2023 X3 with wireless charging tray (and she also has an iPhone 15 pro) and she hasn't experienced any issues with it yet but, needles to say, once I get my new iPhone, neither of us will be using our charging trays until there's some kind of official acknowledgment of this and a fix.

BMW called me today to followup and said that they are working with Apple on a fix, but they do not recommend setting up digital key or using the wireless charging pad until further notice.

i4 / iPhone 15 pro, latest IOS.

Second time for me now (I posted earlier in this thread about the first).

After the first time I stopped using the charging tray to charge my phone, just popped it in there briefly to start the car and then pull it out. Today I went out for a meeting and forgot - made it less than 5 minutes from my office when someone called me. I didn't take the call but that jogged my memory so I removed the phone from the tray. Got to my destination, picked up my phone to get the message about Apple Pay not working. Great, can't lock my car and can't start it again so that was fun. Last new phone / transfer of data, sim, etc cost me 4 hours in an Apple store so going prepared with a movie on my iPad next time.

Curious to know if making a phone call is part of the combination that fries the NFC chip. I did take a call the first time it happened. This time with just a short time on the charge pad it was a little warm but nowhere near the heat it gets in other situations so I'm not convinced heat alone is the issue now.

My wife has an X5 and an iPhone 15 Pro. She's too scared to use hers as a key now until this is sorted out - frustrating.

I had the same issue today. I charged my iPhone 15 Pro Max on the wireless charging tray yesterday evening. I did not notice until this morning my ChargePoint app would not allow me to connect to the EV charger at work. The ChargePoint app would display “Apple Pay Issue Detected”. I made an appointment with the Genius Bar and they could not identify or fix defect. They simply replaced my iPhone with a new one.

I will no longer be utilizing the wireless charging tray. 🫤.

So I went into the apple store today and this time they knew about the issue. Ran a diagnostic, reset the NFC chip and all good again. Longest part of the process was waiting to get served.

They also advised not to use the digital key or charge pad until a fix was sorted out (no eta)

I’m not using the charger in my BMW. Even if it does not fry the NFC, it still overheats the phone on a regular basis.

I never cared to wirelessly charge my phone either, but the pad is a super convenient place to put your phone while driving, and I LOVE the digital key. Missing both aspects....

Congrats?

Why do people always feel the need to come in and clutter up a specific topic with their opinion that has nothing to do with the problem at hand?

unfortunately I had already updated to the 17.2 beta, and it's not easy to downgrade to 17.1.1
Has anyone tried to use the charging pad with 17.2 beta? Should the beta version automatically include the update made in 17.1.1?

Is it happening again? With iOS18 and latest BMW software update, my iPhone 15 Pro is overheating and says it needs to cool down.
