iPhone 15 Pro Rumor Recap: 12 New Features and Changes Expected

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 15 lineup in September. As usual, many new features have been rumored for the Pro and Pro Max models, including a USB-C port, A17 Bionic chip, titanium frame, Action button, and more.

Below, we have recapped 12 new features and changes rumored for the iPhone 15 Pro models.

  • A17 Bionic chip: iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to be equipped with Apple's next-generation A17 Bionic chip, manufactured based on TSMC's 3nm process for continued performance and efficiency improvements. The standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are expected to have an A16 Bionic chip.
  • Titanium frame: Like the Apple Watch Ultra, the iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to have a titanium frame instead of stainless steel.
  • Ultra-thin bezels: Similar to recent Apple Watch models, the iPhone 15 Pro is rumored to have ultra-thin curved bezels around the display.
  • USB-C port: iPhone 15 Pro models will feature a USB-C port with support for at least USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, which would result in the devices having significantly faster data transfer speeds with a cable compared to existing iPhones with Lightning. Kuo said the USB-C port on standard iPhone 15 models will remain limited to USB 2.0 speeds like Lightning.
  • Wi-Fi 6E: Like the latest Macs and iPad Pro, the iPhone 15 Pro will support Wi-Fi 6E for faster wireless speeds, according to a leaked schematic.
  • Increased RAM: iPhone 15 Pro models will be equipped with an increased 8GB of RAM, according to Taiwanese research firm TrendForce, while the standard models will likely continue to have 6GB of RAM as they do currently. Additional RAM can allow apps like Safari to keep more content active in the background, preventing the app from reloading content when reopened.
  • Action button: iPhone 15 Pro models are rumored to be equipped with a customizable Action button like the Apple Watch Ultra. The button would replace the Ring/Silent switch that has been included on every iPhone model since 2007. Users would likely be able to assign the button to various system functions, such as Ring/Silent, Do Not Disturb, Flashlight, Low Power Mode, and more.
  • Increased optical zoom for iPhone 15 Pro Max: The iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature a periscope telephoto lens, according to Kuo. This could result in the device having up to 5x-6x optical zoom, compared to 3x on iPhone 14 Pro models.
  • Ultra Wideband improvements: iPhone 15 models will likely have an upgraded Ultra Wideband chip (currently called the U1 chip) for improved integration with Apple's upcoming Vision Pro headset, according to Kuo. The new chip could also offer improved performance or reduced power consumption for location-based functions such as AirDrop and Precision Finding in the Find My app.
  • LiDAR Scanner improvements: iPhone 15 Pro models will have a more power-efficient LiDAR Scanner supplied by Sony, which could improve 3D depth scanning performance for AR apps and Night mode photos, according to Kuo.
  • More repairable design: Following in the footsteps of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, the iPhone 15 Pro is expected to have a more repairable design.
  • eSIM-only in more countries: iPhone 15 Pro models could be compatible with eSIMs only in France and potentially other countries. Apple first removed the physical SIM card tray from iPhone 14 models in the U.S. last year.

so new new modem and the same 5G speeds as the 14Pro? I find that hard to believe ...

If they remove the SIM card tray in Europe, I don't think I'll buy it.

EDIT: Okay, @lkrupp disagrees with me not buying the phone if it is eSIM only. What are you going to do, make me buy it? LOL... I don't really see the point on forcing everyone on eSIMs, you can use eSIM already, leave us the option to use the physical SIM card. I must remind to our non-European readers that in many countries you cannot get a pre-paid eSIM, it has to be a nanoSIM.

Same here. SIM removal here in Europe would mean instant death, the rest, I could not care, nothing worth paying hundreds of Euros over my trusty 13pro.
Still no touch ID, still no (admitting niche) IR blaster. The 13pro is simply too good, the 14 had nothing to offer and the 15 seems more of the same.
Coming from the X to the 13pro, there was a major difference as there was from the 6s to the X.
But now, the "must have" factor is simply missing.

a 6x optical zoom might swing me, but I am not yet convinced it will be optical (and just for clarification: what we have today on the 13/14Pro/Max is digital zoom)

Absolutely happy with my 3x tele lens. I actually use a real camera if it is needed. For normal pics on the go and even a complete 3h+ recording of a T.Swift concert in Philadelphia (my grand daughter dragged me in there but I admit, I really enjoyed the evening) the 13pro is perfectly suited.
It´s a question of what you get for your money. Minimum to pay are $500 after resell value and a bit more zoom is not worth that. Besides, it will have the "dynamic island" in the middle of the screen, a no go.

Actually decent upgrades when taken together, especially for the Max with the optical zoom. Just the titanium frame is enough of a reason for them to increase the price by $100 on the Pro. Hopefully that helps with some real weight savings, especially for the bigger Max. But with the glass back, I’m not so sure. Can’t wait until they can find a way around that.

Here in Spain e-Sims are only available from the major (expensive) providers and only on contract. A no go. Prepaid (70%) do not allow e-Sim at all. Exception are the iPad e-Sims on the go where you can buy data as a tourist at astronomical rates.
Because the iPads are still not able to make phone calls, every 100 Euro Android Tablet can do that, but noooooo, 800 Euro iPad mini cellular can not even send or receive a text message.

It’s possible they added the titanium to stay very close to the weight of the 14 Pro/14 Pro Max and not make the 15 Pro/15 Pro Max noticeably heavier?

Well, I do not carry my DSLR with my 100-400 lens with me all the time, so, when out in nature without it, I’d pay for a 6x optical zoom in an iPhone, but that’s just me.

Next year’s iPhone 16 lineup will most likely get the Qualcomm X75 which is Qualcomm’s first modem compatible with 5G Advanced, the next generation of 5G. I guess Apple will use their first modem on the next SE model.

I agree with you completely. Having the SIM card tray there as a necessary option is important to those of us who travel. In some parts of the world, you simply have no choice but a SIM card. In other parts of the world, they make it super difficult to get an eSIM. I know it seems like it would be easier, but the fact is it’s not. I will travel to Hong Kong and get the dual SIM version this time. The great thing, it’s an iPhone and eSIM also works and can hold up to ten eSIMs in addition to two physical SIMs and can turn on whichever two cellular lines want at any time.

What Apple is doing to Americans with the iPhone 14 is ensuring the carriers make money on bullcrap international roaming fees that US carriers make more in a day than using a foreign carrier for sometimes over a month. I have traveled to Cambodia and used a $10 SIM for two months with unlimited data, calls and texts.
