The S24 Ultra isn't prohibitive to carry. I wouldn't mind an iPhone that size.
we are talking about this article...S24 ultra is an 6.8" this Apple iphone 16 pro ultra uber max is going beyond already to 6.9" so even bigger than s24 ultra...and in 4 years even bigger...Its clear when Apple or Samsung doesnt have big ideas they go big...
I dont have the "whats mine its best" so you are too subjective but i bet you have your own limits and you dont want your own S30 ultra to have 9" display

People never upgraded every year; it was almost always two years except for enthusiasts..hence the S line of iPhones. Now it's almost every three years, on average.

As for this bit of info...meh... Keeping my 13 Pro for another year, at least.
in the early(ier) days they sure did, and there were and are apparently still plenty people on the yearly upgrade program, but yes, now it's 3-4 years for upgrades.
And I'll keep my 13PM until there is a truly compelling reason to upgrade, phone is typically at 40-50% battery at eo day at 85 or so battery health, and plenty fast enough for me ...

Let’s be Honest alright, the 15 series line up was was mediocre, disappointing, lame, BORING.
I guarantee that the next iphone will only come with 3 difference:
1) larger displays
2) a new button
3) “AI” integrated

Another Boring year ya’ll, so save the cash and skip, AGAIN.
Folding iPhones are coming.

Now there are naysayers here but it will happen and you will buy one.

Though I have a 15 PM, I'd purchase the 16 PM just for the potential main camera improvement (assuming it pans out in tests).
I'm with you there, last year I was tempted because of the rumors, esp the 1x-5+x "real" zoom but as that didn't pan ut, I kept my 13PM ... while I never see any smartphone replacing my DSLR, it sure would be nice ...

I'm so torn because while I think the 15 Pro Max is much easier and more comfortable to hold than the 14 Pro Max, it's really at it's limits of comfort for me to use one handed. I love the bigger battery and screen, but the thought of it getting even bigger now will probably push me back to the 16 Pro. I find the phone so uncomfortable to use with a case on, which will probably be what these new dimensions will feel like naked.

For those of you excited by the larger form factor, how do you deal with using the phone one-handed? Do you just not use it one-handed? I have normal adult male size hands so I'm genuinely curious how you all deal.

Disagree completely. Personally used to almost yearly upgrade, have been stuck with the 13PM since it launched with no reason to upgrade, but this year is different. New battery tech, significantly more efficient SoC, new display tech with increased efficiency, better modem and WiFi 7, faster RAM… this is gearing up to be the biggest upgrade since the iPhone 12 gen, specially for those of us who are road warriors.

Yeah, 15 Pro/Max was pretty boring and played way too safe, but it's typical for "odd" number release. More refinements, rather than new cool features/improvements.

I’d argue that the 14 was also pretty boring. Then again, I would have preferred a slimmer notch than what they went with, but that’s just personal preference for less invasiveness.

Once you use a larger display, it's hard going back to a smaller one. I'm sure there's a limit but the Pro Max isn't it. I'd be happy with a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra sized iPhone. But I do think that larger displays works better on Android because the back button and menus are at the bottom, where they belong. In iOS, where it's a jumbled mess with the back button at the very top and occasional menus at the bottom.

And don’t forget all your icons are going to snap automatically to the hardest place to reach.

I still don’t understand why in the year 2024 Apple thinks people can’t handle placing icons on a grid where they want them.

I've had the iPhone since the 3g, and I never did yearly, nor did anyone else I knew. Cingular/AT&T was doing two-year contacts at the time.

Now I just pay the full price outright from Apple, but rarely upgrade. 🤷🏻‍♂️

On non-size related points...

Are users going to have to update hardware just to get AI software features? That's going to annoy a lot of users, surely.

Also, wonder if they'll change the name of Siri to something else to give it refresh with new AI features; rather like Google just changed its AI to Gemini (from Bard).

I think this is subjective. I went to a PM size as I needed the best battery and performance for working heavily on my device away from the office. Now I’m in the office more and I want a device that is easier to reach and lighter weight. It will be easy for me to go down to a smaller phone. I might even make a move on the 15 Pro if these larger device rumors keep coming.

I always wondered about this.

Why go from 2 year contracts to buying it outright from Apple?

For the past 3 decades I replace my Nokias, Sony-Ericcsons & iPhones every 2 years.

For the past decade I am hoping my telco would eventually offer 3 year contracts.

I have a 3 year data contract with my iPad.

When Apple perfects their 6G modem I am hoping that the MBP will be offered with my telco on a 3 year data plan.

They are coming, but I don't have to buy one. Maybe if it's a pro size (not max) that folds in half like an old-school flip phone, then maybe.

Yeah if these rumors are true, I’ll be holding onto my 11 another year.. or two… or three.

that seems to be what the market (aka users) want, right or wrong. my wife has a 13 mini and she'd love another mini but doesn't seem to be happening
I’m not sure that’s what the market actively wants. I think it’s more a case of people just taking whatever is offered them. Apple is going to offer whatever they think will make them the most money. I love the battery life on my 15 Plus. But my next phone may be an iPhone SE. If Apple wants to do something different, they should find ways to make regular and Pro iPhones and iPads noticeably lighter. That would be a feature I could get excited about.

I made no qualifications on what is the right size. All I said was that the Pro Max isn't the limit. I used the S24 Ultra as an example. I have no idea what to make of your other comments.

The iPhone 14/15PM is 6.7". The Samsung S24 Ultra is 6.8". The rumor is that the iPhone 16PM is 6.9". Not really a big difference, especially if they make the display wider like the Samsung.
