My black 16GB definitely squeaks/creaks when held on the sides - anybody know of a fix or do-it-yourself solution?

Blacks are definitely affected. I just got one on lunch and it's definitely sharp on the edges. If I were a gilr, I could probably could file a nail on it. Definitely thinking about exchanging it as well. My first gen was smooth, and I don't think this is meant to be as rough as it is.

Finally a thread that makes me feel good (or lucky) about my 16gb black. Edges smooth, no squeeks, etc. For those of you with issues, I would def return to Apple as they do have some perfect phones in the pipeline.

Same problem here with my 8GB Black iPhone. Rough on both sides but only towards the middle. Feels smooth on the top portion though. Taking it back to Apple tomorrow.

sharp edge on the left side for me. i've been noticing it the last 2 days (don't know how i didn't notice it sooner). only in the center and it's a white iPhone. anyone that's returned it back to the apple store, did they let you keep your current one till they get the new one? or do you have no phone till they get the new one in stock? thanks.

I was in San Antonio on business, so took mine back to the apple store there. They said, they'd have to order one. No problem. I told them I'd be back in town in about 3 weeks. The guy said, it'll probably take a week or 2. Got a call the very next day, after I'd left town 3 hours earlier.... 'dude, your new iphone is here'

Great. Hang onto it for me.

Stories like these are scaring me cos i'm considering getting a 3G iPhone. Do i have to wait a month or so for new batch of shipments to arrive?

The glass on the bottom of my phone is sunk about half a mm below the bezel and the top is about half a mm above. When I slide to unlock, my finger hits the bezel instead of sliding off.

Annoying as heck!

i can't believe you are living with this instead of taking it back asap.

mine has light bleed on the left, a slanted sleep button and raised glass on the top near the sleep button, and i'm taking it back.

16gb black btw

bringing back an old thread,

i just bought my iphone recently and i've encountered this problem with the rough edge on one side of my iphone 3g 16gig white.
i've made an appointment in a couple of days with the apple store genieus. im just wondering if this is like an auto replacement problem for them or if i gotta argue it some. theres also a small crack that appeared where the rough edge is as well.

so, having rough edges, will the apple store replace my phone without hassle?

My iPhone 3G (black) was out of the initial 14-day period, and the genius said that because of that, the uneven glass and rough edges were cosmetic issues and did not warrant a replacement. When I showed him the crack between the headphone jack and the bezel, he gave me a replacement.

I think that if you're within the initial 14 days, they won't hassle you.

Interesting I just found this thread. I picked up a new 16GB black iPhone 3G on Sunday Aug 31st. The left side of the phone (side with volume rocker) the black plastic back is not flush with the chrome bezel, and it feels very sharp there.

Having seen all these complaints, and considering I'm within my 14 days I'm gonna go back to the apple store. For a $325 apple product, I expect better.

To all you guys, there is an easy solution to those sharp edges problems. If your iPhone is good in all other aspects, I strongly suggest you pick up a piece of polishing cloth at a jeweler (the ones used to polish gold) and start removing those edges. I did exactly the same and was able to remove all the edges within 30 minutes. I now have a perfectly smooth iPhone.

When you exchange you are risking to get a worse display for example.

As an update, I finally got back to the SA apple store yesterday and made the swap. Some six weeks later I might add.

Iphone is a piece of $#!+ !!!!!

I love Apple, But this phone needs a lot of work still. I think all Apple manufacturing needs to be moved back to the USA ! to control QA.:apple:

I showed up for my genius bar appointment today and got a replacement (iPhone is 12 days old today). I didn't realize how bad that sharp edge was. My new iPhone 3G feels worlds better in my hand. All smooth now :D

ive noticed that with mine on the back above the apple logo if you tap the back it rattles like something is loose no issues with phone though i have the 16gb black anyone else with this a/s

Hold the ring/silent switch with a finger and try it again ;)

Black 16GB bought a few months ago here. No problems at all. It's even been dropped on a tile floor once. No cracks, squeeks, etc. Of course now that I've said that it will spontaneously explode. :p

wow i read through this thread without realising it's a year old. now one year later, after unboxing my new white 3GS i noticed straight away that it has a sharp edge on the right side.

Strangely enough I never had this issue on my old 16 GB 3G which I got in late July last year.

Yeah, but at least the grave-digger searched! hehe

My new 3G-S has a sharp edge on the right as well.. as if the glass wasn't seated flat. Oh well.

Both of the 16gb white 3g's I've owned had sharp edges. It definitely annoyed me as I don't use a case.

Just received a replacement 16gb black 3Gs because the first one had exactly this problem on the right hand side of the screen. Just unpacked the replacement to find it's got exactly the same issue. I used my 1g phone to play cricket with, but this one feels so weak I've gone out and bought a case for it. Shame, everything else is pretty good. :(
