So yes yes yeahhah, 3GS is out and from real life experience it's nothing like one would imagine. Sure, a bit better, slightly faster and all that.

Meanwhile, the 3G models are bogged down. Since the 3GS was introduced together with OS3.0, OMG the 3G is nearly pathetic, I would call it unusable for professional purposes anyway, just too slow.

I am not sure what the cause is. Likely, or naturally, it would have to be OS3.0. But I just don't know what on earth it is. Before, it was acceptable.

I probably now understand all the focus on "speed" with the introduction of 3GS. Obviously Apple knew things were wayyyyy tooooo slowwww. I mean, have you tried a Blackberry ?? I hate it, but it works incredibly well, and incredibly fast. The iPhone is a cute toy in comparison.

Apple needs to put away the "cute" and get down to make this thing work. Otherwise it will be just like PCs v.s. Macs in the old days: Macs just too slow and guess who owns the market ?

It slowed my 3G as well so I just set it up as a new phone and it's a lot snappier. Hope this helps.

Huh? Restore your 3G phone as a new iPhone dude. I've compared the 3G (3.0) and the 3GS side by side and while very processor-intensive apps and WiFi surfing is certainly quicker on the 3GS, the 3G is just about as quick for *most* things. Launching apps, emailing, texting, google maps, etc shouldn't be noticeably different for the most part and this is exactly what I noticed in my side-by-side comparison.

Something is wrong with your software installation if you're seeing huge performance differences outside of WiFi surfing, boot times, or very processor intensive apps/games.

Sorry to be so ignorant, but how do we set it up as a new phone? Just restore it? Is anything lost?

Just click "Restore" in iTunes when the phone is connected. You will be given the option to set it up as a new phone or restore it from a backup at some point in the process - it might be towards the end IIRC.

Yes, if you set it up as a new phone, everything is lost. You will need to re-sync your contacts, setup email accounts again, etc, so you'll need backups of all this stuff. You could always sign up for a free MobileMe trial and sync your contacts & calendars before doing the restore. Either that or just sync them beforehand to Outlook, Windows Mail, iCal, etc so that you can easily get them back after the restore (you should already have this stuff backed up somewhere anyway).

I find the 3GS noticeably quicker on those items. I am using the iphone more often now than I did with 3G. Just much more rewarding to use now. not by a million miles but enough

What happens to the applications that you purchased? Even if you do a back up it seems that if you set it up as a new phone they wouldn't be there anymore. I have never done this before so I'm a little curious. I haven't noticed anything dramatic in terms of speed, but some of my games are a little slower now.

My 2g seems to be enjoying the 3.0 face lift.
However, the 3g is coughing all along the way.
Don't know if I should take him to the "genius" bar.
Any suggestions?

I installed 3.0 and I've done a restore as a new phone many times and mine is still slow and buggy.. Hopefully 3.1 will improve mine but I never had this problem with the old software... I shouldn't have to rely on software updates to make the phone useable to begin with.. Don't get me wrong I can still use it but in my other posts my 3G speed is a lot slower now.. My edge speed is faster than my 3G. Now I understand it could be the network from all the new customers soaking up the bandwith, and clogging the cell network, but come on then AT&T should fix this problem.. I really hope apple fixes this issues or I might just either go with another phone on AT&T or leave all together..

What really gets me is I have friends that have iphone's blackberries and some samsung phones. When we are hanging out sometimes we have to make calls, I will pull out my iphone and make a call and not even 10 secs into the call I will just get disconnected. Sometimes my friends will be on the phone to at the same time as me and they are on AT&T also and they don't have the problems I do..

I think the glory days of pulling out an iphone and people would say " WOW look that guy has an iphone, I want one too..." But to me it seems like it's more trouble than it's worth.. What's the point of have the best device if it doesn't work right...

Come on now, it's not thaaat slow. Like other have mentioned, try to set it up as a new phone. That should speed it up. ;)

Your applications are displayed in iTunes, correct? If so, then they are stored on your computer and will be available to re-sync after the restore. They will all be in alphabetical order on the phone though after the restore/re-sync, so you'll need to rearrange them in the order you want.

Aside from re-syncing music & apps (slow), I can probably restore my entire phone to it's current state in 30 minutes flat, as I simply re-add my MobileMe account to the iPhone after the restore and all of my contacts, calendars, bookmarks, etc are updated instantly. I love this feature.

I really want to set up my 3G as a new phone again, but iam having trouble figuring out the easiest way to backup all my contacts/mail account/calender/texts etc. Any help would be great runiing windows 7.

I reverted back to 2.2.1 and it's been quite snappy. I'm impressed. I think the reason is because 2.2.1 was built for the 3G but, 3.0 was built for the 3GS and then "made to run" on the iPhone 3G. My iPhone 3G is so slow and laggy on 3.0 compared to 2.2.1.

As I already stated, a MobileMe free trial account will allow you to sync your contacts, calendar, etc over the air. Alternatively, you can sync your contacts & calendars with Windows in the iTunes setup (although I've not used Windows 7). Your existing texts will be gone for good and you will have to setup your email accounts again if you restore it as a new phone however. You will also have to re-sync music & apps from iTunes afterwards. It's basically the same as getting a new phone when you restore it as a new phone.

Do you not already have your contacts & calendars backed up somewhere? What happens if you lose your phone or need to obtain a replacement from Apple? Terrible idea.

of course, that makes perfect sense. Very unfortunate. Apple is good at this: often its OSs once out need years of hardware development before a decent performance is achieved !!!

How did you go back to 2.2.1 ? that could be another option if things don't speed up after I try the new phone thing.

i'm not sure if it's so much slower than 2.2.1 that i'm gonna have a fit, since it 2.2.1 wasn't even fast to begin with, but trust me, just about everyone I know who have 3G have commented that it's definitely slower than before. My 3G has been a lot slower but I kinda stopped hoping or caring that the 3G is ever gonna be a fast phone.

It took me a few tries to get it to downgrade. Here's what I did:

First I put my iPhone in DFU mode and tried restoring to 2.2.1 on iTunes 8.2. I kept getting an error from iTunes before it would even start restoring.

So then I booted into Windows and tried it there... It restored, but then I couldn't get out of recovery mode with QuickPwn.

Then I went back to the Mac and put my iPhone in Recovery Mode instead of DFU and it was able to restore to 2.2.1 with an error at the end (this is normal). Now I was stuck in recovery mode again (but this is normal as well).

Then I used iRecovery to do "fsboot" and boot into 2.2.1 and activate it. That worked but as soon as I restarted the iPhone, it would go back into recovery mode.

That's when I re-booted into Windows again and used QuickPwn (this time it worked) to kick my iPhone out of restore (I didn't go through the jailbreak process... I only used it to kick it out of restore).

That's how my night went last night... quite interesting but it finally worked.

My old 2G the wife has seems more responsive with 3.0. It's obviously slow compared to the 3GS, but if I didn't have that to compare it do, I'd say the 2G is doing just fine.

my 3g is running on 3.0.1 and its pathetically slow as hell!I hate it, it takes a whole minute to turn my iphone on and off its really slow and always lags. Personally I think apple is trying to bog down the 3G's so we will buy the new 3GS's:mad:

I totally agree.

the 3g is still faster than nearly all other smart phones...

And you don't know how much it hurts :( when the Safari app crashes, or the messages app takes a few extra seconds to load. And when a memory intensive app freezes and takes almost 2x longer to load. 2.2.1 had a speed we have all become accustomed too, and so we demand the same of 3.0 and 3.x and so on. Doesn't it hurt when you have to turn off your iPhone 3G due to reception issues (O2 ) etc and have to wait the minute to shut down and the same again to start up. Also when your out and about, this iPhone is burning a hole in you pocket  and eating your battery and all you did was leave the mail app on  . LOL I could go on...

But I'll save you the gripe :p
