So far it has been nice and smooth on my 3GS.
Its sitting there with 168MB of ram open waiting to multitask.
Backrounder is awesome on the 3GS.
Im running Navigon GPS, along with Pandora and I even drop a few text messages all at the same time without even breaking a sweat.
With the added ram and faster CPU Apple should have enabled apps to run in the backround on the 3GS models.

i still agree with Apple on this front. most iPhone users still have the older phones. even if i had a newer one - i probably wouldn't use backgrounder. it was glitchy for me and IMO wasn't worth the battery wasted.

sure i could do 2 things at once on my 2G - but it slowed everything down to the point it would just be faster to quit an reload.

I never used it on my 3G, but on my 3GS backgrounder has been 100% stable and has never slowed down my phone, even with a ton of apps using it. I only go this crazy (6 apps at once) in my car when it's connected to a charger. I also find in the gym having only FitPhone running via backgrounder is a huge help. I can go back and forth between the iPod, SMS, and FitPhone without losing where I was, and it opens instantly.

Thats why I said on the 3GS only. The other 2 previous models dont have the resources. The 3GS handles it no probs.

someone here asked what else you can do in the background besides stream music

well...
-have SMS run in the background, now you dont have those several second startup times so it seemingly would run smoother
-run safari in the background. Now you can quit out while loading a large page to, say, change the song, or do something else (respond to a text), and you wont have to reload the page. It'll load in the background and be waiting for you
-gonna play a game for a while? set it to run in the background, so you can stop to respond to text/im, check something on the internet, change the song, and return to the game in the same place you left it with no start up or load times
-youtube in the background, so you can use music videos as songs (not sure if this'd work, cuz its a video)

So what's the best way to jailbreak your 3GS if you want is Backgrounder and nothing else?

I used PurpleRa1n and then used Cydia to install Backgrounder. It works great!

I can't understand why Apple won't allow background apps on the 3GS...

When using backgrounder, is there a way to see which apps are running so that you can keep track and close the ones you don't need in order to preserve battery?

I had Trapster running in the background, xGPS running and bluetooth headset on.

A call came in and my phone took a crap. lol.

Locked up, anyone have this problem?

I have a 3GS.

yea yea i wouldnt be surprised at all.

Really? I have Navigon and Trapster running all the time together and get calls on my BT headset without issue. Backgrounder has been very stable for me.

Although this is only preserving accidental backgrounder battery life. I went into backgrounder and blacklisted every app that serves no purpose running in the background. So that's BeeJiveIM, because that has push notifications, or the calculator, app store, weather, 3rd party apps that don't need to run in the background, etc etc. I do this because it prevents you from accidentally background enabling applications that don't need it, thus far possibly saving battery life.
