and only to start getting bigger again....guess bigger is better?

All the phones out there right now are great....and there is always going to be something better and I guess bigger.....

This reference of how "phones used to be big, then got small, and for some reason are now going big again" is an awkward point of contention. It's getting big, generally speaking, but it's getting "big" in an entirely different way compared to old big phones. Things like screen sizes and batteries are getting big, but they serve a function (and an arguably good function).

They're just not getting big for the sake of getting big, and they're getting big with an entirely different functionality and reasoning. It's not like we're going to one day see a thick, brick-like new phone in the future. Not intentionally, anyway.

I thank you VERY much for posting those pics. I have been hungering for a visual comparison for a while!

Thanks for the comparison shots. Number one reason I sent back my Samsung Galaxy 2 phone was the wide form factor, and waiting for the iPhone 5 to come out and hope it will only have a taller form factor and not any wider one. ;)

Sorry but it sounds like your just settling. Everyone thought the iPhone screensize was just perfect. And when the rumor of a longer (but not wider) screen started, most everyone felt such an idea was absolutely horrible. And as this rumor starts gaining momentum, haters of the stretched iphone are starting to warm up to the idea because they have no choice. But I'm betting you're not the first one that has come to the rationalized acceptance that a stretched iphone 4s is what you may be in store for with the upcoming iphone. Visually, it's gonna look ridiculous. Hopefully the rumors won't be true.

This always cracks me up. Classic case of looking over the real facts.

Brick phones were thick. Today's phones are striving for thinness. So much that every new phone is trying to get rid of 1-3 mm compared to its predecessor. The nokia phone linked is probably twice the thinness of the latest phones.

The biggest real estate user used to be hard keys. Now we have big screens because that is how we interact. The larger the screen = easier to interact with objects on it. You cannot make the keys larger as they were large enough.

It's nuts that a mere year ago, TouchWiz was incredibly frowned upon. Today... its features are one of the driving factors of purchasing the SIII.

Pretty wild, if you ask me.

Well, if you decide you want to hook your phone up to your hd tv and a wireless bt keyboard and mouse and have your phone utilize a pc interface you're golden.

If you want to hook up a ps3 or xbox controller directly to the phone via wire or bt and play games like tekken or super mario kart via downloaded roms, you're golden.

Want to attach an external drive and upload/download files between the phone and drive. No problemo.

Check out the vid. iPhone may have a few issues trying to compare to this. Not to mention every reviewer says this phone is fast and the OS/Touchwiz UI is buttery smooth.

Edit: Forgot to add. If you are a male over 6 feet tall, you'll understand that the 4.5-4.8" screen is perfect. The iPhone is actually too small imo. The whole iphone fits within the S3's screen.

Had the galaxy for a couple weeks when I switched from AT&T to Verizon. I like the thinness and curve. For me, the largeness made it to unwieldy. Bigger issue. Android kept crashing. Hard crashes causing reboot. Went back to iPhone. For me, I wouldn't mind a slightly larger iPhone but I'm happy with the 3.5 inch screen

Stop it already!!!! Both phones represent the best Samsung and Apple have to offer. S3 is great the 4S is great the 6 gen will be great...competition is good for us, we benefit from it. I appreciate both iOS and Android. Both can accomplish many tasks we never dreamed of doing on a mobile phone. Both Macrumors and Xda are now full of teenager like argumentative threads like this....TO EACH HIS OWN!! Mods need to shut these threads down!!

Actually even though these posts can sometimes be annoying, I have on occasion, garnered some good information that gets posted within. There is always some nugget of truth, new specs, new info that gets put in amongst the flotsam.

You think these forums are childish and insane (these threads) you should try general or trade chat in WoW. Makes people here seem like venerable wise folks!

Just a made up comment with a few false android stereotypes thrown in. Cool story bro, needs more dragons

Bigger in order to house a larger screen, not bigger to house the guts. Big difference there.

My post was for fun facts not for people to get all hissy about. yes phones are smaller in terms of guts and the screens are nice and big...don't get me wrong i jumped on the iphone the first day it came out. but when phones get too big to fit in your pocket....and you need a fanny pack like holder to have it on your belt instead....the phones are still bigger than they used to be.

Got myself a brand new iPhone 4. I like the build materials. Bigger issue. Apple kept holding back features in firmware updates. No maps or Flyover causing frustration. For me, I don't mind the slightly larger Galaxy S III and I'm happy with the 4.8 inch screen.

See, we can all make up tales of woe. :p

Oh no- don't misunderstand me. I'm just saying there's a difference. Not trying to criticize you.

Please don't let me see the "phones are getting too big to fit in my pocket" argument again.

Unless you only have pockets that are exactly the dimensions of your iphone 4/4S... any recently released phone will fit fine. In fact, in many cases, it fits better because it's so much thinner.

It really is a non-issue.

Can the GS3 be upgraded to the latest android? I read that most android fones can't be updated due to carrier.

I've already given my two cents in other threads here. If you're used to using your iPhone one handed and are tempted by Samsung's super slick monster, give it a try first and decide if you can adapt.

As for the S3, it typifies Samsung's approach to competing. Everything has to be bigger/better/faster/smoother in the race to the top (the S3 must have been a shock to HTC with their One X). I love my S3 (and I do believe it leaves the 4S mostly behind the curve) but I wouldn't be too surprised if the actual iPhone 5 is a decent response to the Samsung/HTC threat.

Yeah I know..but android will be updated in future ;) I'd like to have the ability to run the latest version

Well, the Galaxy S was launched with Andrid 2.2 and was updated to 2.3
The Galaxy S II was released with Android 2.3 and now runs 4.0.4

There is no reason to think that the GSIII won't get the next revision of Android.

On top of that, being a Galaxy S device it's likely to be very popular and well supported by the development community if custom firmware is your bag.

I am so excited to see this phone in person next week. If the screen is to my liking and I think I can use this with one hand, then I'm getting it. And that's a big deal seeing that I've used and loved an iPhone for 4 years now.

Unless you have unusually large hands, even at 6+ feet, a 4.5-4.8" screen is not comfortable to operate with one hand. People certainly have different priorities, but I have issue with any phone that cannot be comfortably operated with one hand (meaning it has a screen which I can comfortably navigate with my phone while I hold the phone comfortably in the palm of my hand).

I'm 6'1" tall. I operate my S2 with one hand no problem.

I'm there and it's nowhere near as comfortable for me, and I have a taller friend who has one of these larger Samsung phones and he can't. On the flip side I know some people who probably could (they've definitely got big hands). Heck, comfortable operation starts to end for average hands just past the iPhone.

If your hands are somewhat average I'd suggest you try it out and notice the difference in your hand movement but I don't really expect people to be too open to this sort of thing. Some people just like large screens and that's okay.
