This feels almost like a no-brainer with Android's newest update....

Reasons to Go Android
- Notification light: The android has a notification light that lights up different colors (muted colors, not a random bright awkward flash) depending on if you get text, etc.

- Material Design - This new design philosophy has got Google in the perfect realm of "simplicity" and "beautiful interface". Apple went too far on the "making things look super real" with skeumorphic, then went "lets go super super simple and go opposite of making things look like real items"... Google took the opportunity and found the balance between the two.. "Material Design". Make things look simple, but make them function "like" things in real life.. i.e. cards.

- Email - It has squares with images or initials next to every email address. You only get "images" if you are using the 6+, and only in the contacts App, not mail app. You can't install Google's email app and expect to see what you see in android either. Its simple and sleek.

- Better Notes App - Look at Google Keep, google it. Today's newest update to it makes Apple's notes app look like Notepad compared to the latest text editors out there, you can shove images, and even checkboxes/reminders into it. The only bad thing about it is you have to sync notes to google to get them off your phone, unlike Apple that allows you to sync the notes to your computer without touching Apple's servers.

- Better Translate App - If your like me and need to translate foreign languages, with the Google App, you can take a picture of something with the foreign letters and translate the text using the Translate App. Google decided to leave this feature out of the iOS version, maybe to get people to go to the Google side.

- Better Usage Graphs - If you look at the usage details on android phone, you get pretty graphs of everything and can even set a data usage limit and have it warn you when your about to hit it. Apple only keeps track of the usage per charge and its just the one number. Nothing that shows a graph of what happens over time.

- Better Maps App - The maps app is much more solid in google and has street view, this seems to be a trend where Google leaves Apple versions of Google's Apps more limited...

- Updates - The android phone seems to get updates every week with some improvement here and there to one or more apps. I find it hard getting used to Apple's iOS8 where there are barely any updates to the suite of apps used.

- Face Unlock - This is so cool, patented by Google... you can unlock the phone with your face. Google uses image algorithms to recognize your face so that instead of punching in numbers or using your finger, the camera looks at your face and in a split second unlocks your phone. If it doesn't, you can unlock it with a backup pattern and you can train the phone to recognize your face in other situations where it can't.

- Contacts App - OMG. This is the coolest looking contacts app that Apple has not got. The pictures of your friends actually take up a decent amount of real estate on the screen and looks simple and easy to use unlike Apples "listing of all your contacts without any photos". If you have contacts on your phone that you sometimes can't remember what they look like, Android makes so much more sense.

Okay, before you go on thinking I might work for Google or am an Android fangirl, you may be thinking why anyone would want to go Apple?

- Privacy - You don't have to sync everything to Apple servers if you don't want to, and you can get Notes off of it without having to sync to Google.

- Better Camera - The camera is much more solid, takes better photos all around.

- Battery Life - The way Apple handles processes is better than android, which leaves background processes running and eat up battery much faster. GPS is a much faster drain on battery with the Google than the Apple. Though Google's "Project Volta" is supposed to change that.

- More Solid, Less Random Crashes - Everything works, the thing about Android phones is apps crash.. randomly, unexpectedly. With the iPhone 6, there have been 0 crashes, even with multiple apps open at the same time. Even though some Apps are not as full with functionality like Android's versions that actually look a lot nicer in some cases, you can be sure your going to have less negative randomness.

- Music to Wake Up To - This may sound crazy, but you can't set a song from your library to wake up to with Android, you have to pick its standard set of sounds it comes with. If you want to be able to set an alarm with your music, then you want to get the iPhone.

- Better Media Player/Unified Storage - I don't like microsd cards, its nice that everything is on the phone and you can store gigantic music collections onto it without any removable storage. Now this one could be a "plus" for android, but I like Apple's "one drive" solution, the media player also feels more slick and built for music.

- Facetime/Video Chat - This is one of the most amazing things EVER!!!! You can video chat or call without using the phone, but just on wifi or any cellular connection. Skype exists, but it is horrible on iOS and is not all that great on Android and consumes more bandwidth and is more prone to crashing. Facetime is integrated into the OS without an App and it just works.

- Health - The healthkit is pretty new, but you don't have to keep track of steps you walk without installing any third party apps, its built right into the OS! Android does have some nice apps that keep track of this stuff, but you have to install them 3rd party.

- Fingerprint Sensor - This is another Apple plus, other phones have fingerprint sensors, but the Apple one is the best, It. Just. Works.

- Lightning Cable - Even though this isnt part of the phone, it is neat to be able to plug in a cable without having to fidget with the direction or orientation your inserting it in your phone. MicroUSB is nice for the android phones, but you have to actually think about how you insert it.

- Appstore - The Appstore is just so much more complete than Google's and all apps are reviewed, so the Apps are generally of higher quality and caliber unlike Google's where anybody can put anything up there and it'll get approved.

- Siri - Talk to the phone, so many languages, its not Cortana, but its still pretty good. Sounds better than Google Now.

Everything said... I have an iPhone 6, I love it... but Android is doing a good job wooing me back to their newer devices.

Excellent post. For the first part of it, you had me convinced to go with Android, but by the end of it I was undecided again.

I'm debating between an Galaxy s4 an an iphone 6. I'm not not interested in the bigger s5 or other androids -- the s4 is the one to beat for me, or not beat.

If anyone wants to make an argument for or against either of these choices, I'm all ears. :)

Get a OnePlus One if you can, don't use touchwiz on the Samsungs.

Why not? And if one gets a Samsung, can they skip whatever 'touch wiz' is and not use it?

Let me put it this way. Iphone ios is more idiot proof and ecosystem locked down with all the restrictions put in place. If you don't fall into the category that need this then I would suggest you go for S4.

-much cheaper and value for money.
-s4 and android have many more features and you can have fun doing customization. Iphone UI is just one word - boring.

Don't listen to all the bs by iphone fans here about touchwiz. Their inherent hate for Samsung make them irrational.

If you use another launcher (and google version of core apps) almost all visible parts of Touchwiz are gone. What's left are those unseen core services. Why bother with things you can't see. And btw some of these core services are very useful and not found in gpe. It is not that these additional touchwiz core apps impact anything. If fact s4 has a better battery life than the pure gpe nexus 5.

Ask yourself which matters more: integration or flexibility. That's it.

If you want the ability to pick up myriad accessories, and have your phone interface with any gadget you purchase, and enjoy a well focused app ecosystem where everything plays nice, get an iPhone.

If you want a phone that gives you the tools to cater the experience to your tastes, where your phone is yours to any extent you choose to make it, changing everything to fit your usage style and no restrictions on where you can get your apps, get Android.

I've used both. A lot. Neither is "best". When I have an iPhone I get annoyed at how closed off it is and when I have an Android I get annoyed at how it's not compatible with anything. iOS opened things up enough FOR ME that I'm back on this side of things, but I have an LG G3 sitting here that I also will recommend highly.

Just check out the post below for perfect advice on what you should do without a hint of bias. Don't listen to all the iPhone owners like me with our locked down, boring devices. We are in denial apparently.

Well. Have balance out the sea of praises for iphone, isnt it? :p

Can you really say what I posted is not true...

Just take a look at "Post Your Iphone screen" and "Post Your Android screen" thread to open your eyes.

So are you now denying Iphone is locked down?

Isnt it a rallying call here that 1 years old as well their grandparents have no problem using Iphone but on the other hand tech-savvy people have huge problem with messy Android? Are you flip-flopping now?

All I hear is Touchwiz is crap in here without any substantive arguments. Isnt is a sign or irrational?

It is your damning opinion of iOS and I think you exaggerate the effect it has on the user to suit a more negative stance. That is my take.

Just take a look at "Post Your Iphone screen" and "Post Your Android screen" thread to open your eyes.

So are you now denying Iphone is locked down?
Well the look of iOS was a major pull for me away from Android so those threads are not the best examples you could have used. I have participated on the 'Post your iPhone screen' thread and even put a few trolls in their place on there who have simply contributed to post snarky remarks.

The Android thread you refer to serves a similar purpose for Android people and I have no issue whatsoever with it. Personally I think a lot of the homescreens are ugly and cluttered regardless of whether they have more widgets and Google search bars. I was never really into customising because I like things super simple. I wouldn't go on that thread though and upset people because it is a harmless thread that many find very interesting.

No I have not denied the iPhone is locked down. Again, this was a major pull for me from Android. I preferred the regulated eco-system and have been happy enough with Apple's way to not be bothered about other peoples interpretation of restrictions. I know many other people who use the iPhone and appreciate the way in which it works.

I don't think tech-savvy people have a problem with Android. If they can't get their heads around it, nobody can. I had no problems using it for 4 years and with research and sometimes emailing developers I was able to over come most major problems. My problems with Touchwiz were when I owned an S3 and from what I have seen the S4 was the last device that suffered with the types of lag and bugs that I got tired of. The S5 and Note 3 & 4 are very good devices. Android is more fiddly, but to someone like yourself that is part of the enjoyment out of the box. I can't criticise that.

You are right though the iPhone is usable by most age groups. Not sure about 1 years old though? My 1 year old daughter can turn the screen on and press a load of apps accidentally but that is to be expected considering her cognitive skills are still developing. My brothers 3 year old daughter can access Youtube on her Mum's iPhone and navigate to favourites, but that is hardly full usage.

The iPhone however is very easy to use and although many here including yourself appear to think that is somehow negative, I happen to like the way it has been designed with this in mind. It is a faff free user interface and as many people say, it focusses heavily on user interface and remains simple and pleasant to use. This doesn't mean tech savvy people don't use the iPhone though. That is a common misconception on here. There are plenty of Product Designers like myself here where I work and our head of Electronics and IT development uses an iPhone. He is quite well known in the Raspberry Pie community and his phone of choice is the idiot proof iPhone 6.

I am exagerrating? I have to use positive tone when I criticize iphone? You must be joking right?

I don't see anybody here using positive tone when criticising android or Samsung. In fact a lot of those tones are way worse than negative to the point of insult.

Nothing is more ugly than iphone home screen where you cannot even position icons symmetrically. It has to flow from top left down leaving ugly gap. I can't even fill up the bottom rows first for easy reach.

I don't even want to talk about mess that is the centralized settings. It just

I am not apple crazy so lock down is bad for me. ITunes on windows is an abomination. Iphone is really a dead weight without apple hardware to complement it. And the universally accepted USB drive capability is taken out. Are we living in stone age or what?

Good that you are at least a sane voice around for an iphone fan. At least I don't hear the usual rant about the lag or crashes or ui unusable.

You think iphone is easy to use for everyone? I don't. Try explaining to someone that if you setup another Pc with iTunes and plug your phone in everything in the phone will be wiped? Or you have to be careful not to accidentally uninstall an app which will wipe your downloaded data. Or explain to someone that you need to use a specific PC set with iTunes if you want to extract you files.

I don't care if a phone is "boring". I also have no interest in installing things like "launchers". I'm not a techie.

I just want a phone that works well every single time. But I ALSO want a phone that has a notification light, great swiftkey, and no annoying outgoing text sound that can't be disabled in ring mode. And having to press 'edit' every time before adjusting the alarm clock time? Who thought up that stupid extra step?

My concern about going with iphone is being annoyed by those four things (and a couple of others) for the next couple of years. My concern about going with Galaxy 4 is that it might be a glitchy, troublesome, battery draining phone, and extremely out-dated months 18 months from now.

If someone could convince me that Galaxy s4 is going to work as it's supposed to, not give me a million headaches, and still perform very well and be current in 18 months, I'd go with that.

But I sure don't want to be doing things like "emailing developers" to get problems solved, like the poster mentioned above...

I tried two different G2's last month. A fantastic phone when it worked --- but many weird glitches and issues with both devices. Scared me on Android a bit.

Hi,

perhaps you can help me choose.

My iPhone 4S is dying (battery), and my 3 year contract is nearly up anyway.

I own a Macbook Pro. I'm considering switching to Samsung or another brand of Android phone. In Canada, the iPhone 6, 64GB, costs $375 with a 2 year contract.

The Samsung S5 costs only $200 + extra to upgrade the SD memory card. The Samsung is water resistant and apparently has good battery life. This means a lot because I'm a snowboarder, and sometimes I ride in the backcountry. A working phone could save my life.

I don't use Mac mail or the Mac calendar. I've used Gmail for years now, and sometimes use the Google Calendar.

I'm wondering what cross-functionality I'll lose if I go to Android. I do use the Notes and Reminders apps a little bit. They recently started popping up on my laptop. I guess that's cool. Maybe I'll start using that more.

The only other iCloud app that I hesitate to give up is the new iCloud Photos app, now in Beta. It forms a nice triangle with my iPhone photos and laptop photos.

With Samsung, I'd have to use Google+ for my mobile photos backup. But that wouldn't tie into my computer's iPhoto.

Any thought?

----------

And I'm not at my computer a whole lot. But it is also nice replying to text messages there in messages, rather than on my phone. So I guess I'd lose that as well.

Or is there an Android app i could install on Macbook that would do the same?

Just pay the extra difference.

Its only 175$ for like two years and its a beautiful device compared to the 4S.

Youve been missing out. The new screen with the way it looks like a magazine is way nicer than the S5 screen and the way it all comes together.

There no reason to diminish the experience especially since you have the Mac, its worth the extra cash.

I am pretty sure S4 (in fact any phone) would work as it should if you dont mess with it like rooting /custom rom or installing way too many apps. This from software point of view. What are the weird glitches? Obviously you can't expect bugs free phone. Nowadays most phones (iOS or Android) are as stable as it gets.

Hardware wise, I dont know. I got Galaxy from S to Note4. I didnt have any hardware issues on all them except my S2 NAND after 4 years have some bad sectors. I also have 3GS, 4, 4s, ipad1 & 3 - all still working except the 3GS and 4 home buttons are busted.

Nobody spends so much time on the home screen that they switch to android just for home screen customization. Anyways, take a look at "post your jailbroken homescreen" to open YOUR eyes!

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1812152/

And worry about whether the adulterated hack will crash the phone anytime when different jailbreak apps are installed together. My jailbroken ipads still crash regularly (requiring reboot). So no thanks.

I'm guessing if you strongly recommend the iphone 6 over the S5 for a Mac owner, you'd be even more adamant about the iphone 6 over the S4 for a Mac owner, huh?

I guess I can believe that rationally, but emotionally, I'm scarred by android experiences in the past, and again just recently with LG G2 experiment. (maybe I'll dig out the list of glitches I started keeping). Or maybe it's just LG's that don't work well… it's been years since I've used any non-LG or iphone.

Here are the various problems I encountered on one, or both, of the G2's I tried recently. To be fair, some are third party app errors, some might be things I couldn't figure out/user error, and some are exceedingly minor. But overall, it added up to a trying user experience...

1. Handcent glitch: a mesage came in from one contact, but the pop-up displayed an older message from a different contact.

2. The wallpaper I chose for my home and lock screen mysteriously reverted to the default wallpaper a day later. (Both phones).

3. I could not add hotmail to the intergrated mailbox, only my yahoo. (Both phones).

4. The K-9 mail app I put in 'closed unexpectantly" at least once.

8.. The handcent text got buried under the (swiftkey) keyboard a few times on long texts. (It should push the text up and out of sight as you type). (Both phones)

9. There were a few notifcation light failures, and some that rarely worked at all. (I was using lightflow). (Both phones).

10. I once got a weird notification while using the kindle app saying something about an "invalid item". Also a "can't sync" message.

11. The kindle app "closed unexpectantly" a few times. (Both phones).

12. Once when I using google maps, I clicked on something on a map and the weather forecast appeared on the screen for no known reason. Several times in a row. I was like "Show me map already, stop telling me its raining out!!"

13. Once while listening to google play, a song seemed to skip, and then abruptly switched to a new song.

14. The quiet mode tab would not work sometimes. I would press it either on or off, and it would not change. Had to press it several times on more than one occasion. (both phones).

17. Suddenly, after a few days of no problems, the home screen delayed giving me the correct time. I like to use the phone in unlock mode, and every time I turned on the phone, it would display the last time the phone was on before jumping to the correct time. I'd be like "What time is it? It's 8:45 -- I mean, wait: 9:20!"

18. I got a couple of weird "voice mail error" notifications at random times.

19. The location mode switched from the "low battery" setting I had set it at to "high battery/GPS" settings once without me changing it. (I just happened to notice the change when I was in there for some other reason.)

20. This one is not really a bug, but having to agree to location services permissions everytime I toggled on the location tab was annoying, as were the seemingly endless notifications about app updates available, and the 'wi-fi network detected!" notifications I could not disable on the Verizon version of the phone.

Looks like app related bugs. Maybe the new updated apps have solved them

13. Once while listening to google play, a song seemed to skip, and then abruptly switched to a new song.

2. The wallpaper I chose for my home and lock screen mysteriously reverted to the default wallpaper a day later. (Both phones).

Reason I can think of with this is SD card issue (i.e. SD card unmounted due to corruption or shock)

3. I could not add hotmail to the intergrated mailbox, only my yahoo. (Both phones).
Using Samsung email client, I have no such issue.

14. The quiet mode tab would not work sometimes. I would press it either on or off, and it would not change. Had to press it several times on more than one occasion. (both phones).

Never seen this in the many years I used Galaxy phones. the touchwiz toggle never had this.

I have seen this. When phone is asleep, the display is not updated until the phone is woken. Maybe when you wake up phone, it was in heavy processing so there was delay in refreshing screen.

18. I got a couple of weird "voice mail error" notifications at random times.

Operator issue??

19. The location mode switched from the "low battery" setting I had set it at to "high battery/GPS" settings once without me changing it. (I just happened to notice the change when I was in there for some other reason.)

Most probably you run some navigation apps which prompted you to switch and you accepted that.

20. This one is not really a bug, but having to agree to location services permissions everytime I toggled on the location tab was annoying, as were the seemingly endless notifications about app updates available, and the 'wi-fi network detected!" notifications I could not disable on the Verizon version of the phone.

wifi -detected is shown only if it cannot connect to any of the avaialble wifi networks.

Android software has gotten a lot better with KitKat 4.4.4; but it still not as stable as iOS and Android Apps are hit or miss affair in stability and crashes. But Android is more customizable for sure and has a lot going for it with themes and different launchers, widgets, etc... Android L "Lollipop is the 5th edition and suppose to be even better!

I prefer a simple UI that is very stable and just works well. That the main reason I am on iOS with my iPad Mini Retina and iPad Touch. I have using a WP8 Nokia Lumia 521 but I like to go back to the iPhone and get the new iPhone 6 Plus, so I waiting it out for the next models to come out at the this week or next in November called Apple iPhone "Unlocked" models! If WP had more Apps and a Microsoft had a high end WP Lumia model for sale; I would stick with WP to get WP10 since it is even more smooth then iOS! But the Apple continuity is also pulling me back in along with ApplePay!

Cannot wait to order it online!

I wouldn't leave "water resistant" as a pro for the Samsung on your list just because of occasional snowboarding when you can get a case for the iPhone that will accomplish the same thing. Just sayin'.

It's not about snowboarding. It's about sudden unexpected downpours. I think having mansions in the Silicon Valley foothills where there is zero rain 10 months of the year has caused beloved management to forget that for much of the world, the weather isn't as predictable.

Looks like app related bugs. Maybe the new updated apps have solved them

Reason I can think of with this is SD card issue (i.e. SD card unmounted due to corruption or shock)

Using Samsung email client, I have no such issue.

Never seen this in the many years I used Galaxy phones. the touchwiz toggle never had this.

As for the last one, I realize why I'm getting the notification, but I still don't want to see it and have to swipe it away. Iphone doesn't bother with me this nonsense. It connects to my known networks and leaves me alone otherwise. If I wanted to connect to some restaurant's wifi for some reason, I'll go find it myself.

As for me using a navigation app changing the location mode, I doubt it. I don't recall using one -- and I think I would have recalled it since one is required to go through that annoying "do you give permission for this" step.

As for your rest of your explanations, well, most might be on target and good to know. But what of it? A problem with an explanation is still a problem, no?

Maybe LG's are bad, or maybe just these two particular devices came out of the same bad batch. But in either case, it does make leery of Android in comparison to iphone.

I like that you wanting a phone that could potentially save your life is dismissed as less important than, say, exactly how good a photo you could take...

If you are so worried then get the iPhone. The most important is how you feel about phone since you be using it yourself. All the capabilities do you no good if you are not convinced.

I'm guessing if you strongly recommend the iphone 6 over the S5 for a Mac owner, you'd be even more adamant about the iphone 6 over the S4 for a Mac owner, huh?

Yes absolutely! lol.

Perhaps so. Or just try a Samsung for two weeks and see how it does. If it performs flawlessly, I'll probably be ok. If problems, return it.

It's just not that fun going through the hassle of returning devices, paying the restocking fee, and hoping you don't break the thing while you're trying it out, and so on.

I actually prefer the features of Android -- but I believe iphone works best. So where does that leave me?:D

Frankly, unless you *need* the Apple ecosystem and are tied to iMessage etc, or have hundreds of dollars' worth of Apple apps, I would go Android. The iPhone 6 is a huge disappointment. 1GB of RAM and a lousy, bug-ridden operating system have certainly tipped me towards Android. I'm debating between the Note 4 and the Nexus 6. Unless Android grabs me and keeps me, I'll see what the iPhone 6S/7 looks like but I'm definitely jumping ship until then.

While you're entitled to your opinions this type of post makes me wonder why you're even on the iPhone forum at all.

----------

Let me put it this way. Iphone ios is more idiot proof and ecosystem locked down with all the restrictions put in place. If you don't fall into the category that need this then I would suggest you go for S4.

NICE! So according to you, as long as a person is not a dumba$$ they should go with Android?

iOS vs Android - get what works for you and is most comfortable.

Hardware-wise, you won't go wrong either way. It's about the OS.

I'm a 25 year old college graduate working on a Masters' degree and I'm firmly planted on the iOS side. Not sure how I fit in with the "iOS is for old people and dumbasses" stereotype.

I just find the simplicity, efficiency and overall quality to be superior on iOS. There's only one thing I can't do that I want to do on iOS and it's rarely an issue.

I'm also heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem so I have the benefit of all those extra perks like continuity, hand off, iMessage, iCloud etc.

Sounds about right from mib1800.

Oh well, hopefully my advice was fair and I didn't have to insult a large group of people to give it.
