Ahh interesting. I skipped Gen1 so I wasn't aware of that, figured it was packaged similarly to the phones.
The first Apple box for the sport watch had a lot of heavy plastic in it. Sort of a case for the watch it's self. Plus the watch, charger and band with two lengths to choose from for silicone. Not sure if they have changed since then.
Most iPhones will be in the local UPS hubs by early morning tomorrow around 6:45+ I should know since I work at one, store iPhones came in today already and residential will be here tomorrow and will be held till Friday for delivery and pick ups.
thats a really good question I'm pretty sure apple will be lenient on it but not to sure. they do say put on a case, so i feel like knowing apple they might not accept it back if its covered in scratches

Yeah, so apparently the Worldport facility in Louisville has 20,000 employees and can handle 115 packages per second. That's why all our devices are chilling there.

If the phone gets to the hub later in the day on Friday, it's likely that they won't make it available for pickup, unfortunately, until the next business day, which would be Monday (yikes). I don't know why, but that's been my experience. Also, check your hub's customer service hours. Mine is open from 8 am to 12 pm and then from 7pm to 8:30 pm during the week: there's a big gap in the afternoon where they don't service walk in customers.
In 2014 for the 6 preorder, I got my AT&T wireless plan update email the day after my phone shipped. This year I get it the day after pre order yet I'm still processing in the 10/4-10/10 group. I wish there was some sort of consistency with Apple and all the carriers!!!!!
Hopefully, since my 7 is still in Taiwan.
The two phones I ordered from T-Mobile have been sitting in Louisville since day 1, they have a massive warehouse there. Expecting them to finally leave Louisville for Columbus tomorrow, and then make the trek up to NW Ohio late tomorrow night.
My iPhone I ordered from Apple is currently flying over Manitoba, and will also be arriving in Louisville in about an hour and forty five minutes, hopefully to be put on the same plane/truck to Columbus as my phones from T-Mobile.

EDIT: Funnily enough, even after passing through China, South Korea, Japan, Russia, the Pacific Ocean, Alaska, Yukon Territory, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and now Manitoba... Apple says my phone is still preparing for shipment.

That shouldn't be a problem! He is pretty consistent on the time he comes every day, so as long as I'm not in a surgery! I'll be good to go

It's now gone 1pm on Thursday, AEST. Still 'preparing for shipment'. They'd better ship soon to make the scheduled delivery tomorrow. Starting to get nervous...

Ah man, mine is sitting in KY... status still says "Preparing to Ship" too, my card got charged tho! I hope Apple changes my status soon, so I can sign for it online.

Thought I'd chime in on the recent influx of updates from people. I just signed up for UPS MyChoice in order to see where my phone is and the last status was, "Departed - Anchorage, AK, United States, Wednesday, 09/14/2016", but I just changed to have it be picked up at a UPS store because I'm afraid I won't be home when it get's here on Friday even though I'm leaving for work around 3:00pm so it could get to me in time, the change for hold is still pending so I hope that it get's approved and still get's delivered to the UPS store before I leave at 3pm for work so I can pick it up beforehand. I also chose a location that has Early Pickup available, does anyone quite know what it means when it says that Early Pickup is available at the location?
