Is this factual?

NO. I've personally experienced getting my tracking number from TMO after I had my iPhone in hand. The only reason I knew about a package arriving was UPS MyChoice. For that particular instance, my phone "arrived" in Louisville at 2 AM and I received it later that afternoon. That said, I do benefit from living only 4 hours from Louisville, so YMMV.

And to everyone asking about their card being charged, you're golden! TMO doesn't charge your card until your unit has been allocated for shipping. In other words, if you've been charged, your iPhone is shipping shortly and you should have it on Friday.

Source: me. Been doing this TMO pre-order thing for years (even before we got the iPhone).

I pre-ordered two iphone 7 Plus black 128 and 256 on the 9th at 1210am. Everything went smoothly and perfect. Signed contract after 30 min and received confirmation. However I received the same text to call a number before 10pm to complete the trade in process. I did call and we went through the trade in process again like on the 9th. The only difference is that my credit was fully charged and the shipping date moved from 9/19 to 9/26 to 9/15 to 9/20. So I guess I will receive a ups tracking number soon for delivery on launch day.

So my 7 matte black 128gb is still processing even though it says it will ship either today or tomorrow. I was charged on the 10tg and my tracking number is still just a label.

I second everything you said. I always get a departure scan form Louisville, KY at 2:59am. Arrival in Commerce City, CO at 2:59am (1 hour time difference), then delivered to Colorado Springs by 3pm. If you don't get anything by early Friday morning then you probably won't get it on launch day. Until then, there's a chance.

I ordered a 7+ 128GB Matte Black on 9/9 approx 12:45AM PDT from TMobile. I also pre-ordered an Apple Watch Series 2 from Apple. I haven't gotten any update from TMobile or Apple, both still say processing.

However, I just used my phone number to track by reference on UPS. I got a tracking number showing a package weighing 2.8 lbs scheduled for delivery on 9/16. Over on the Apple Watch pre-order thread, most people's packages are showing less than 2.8 lbs. Not sure if this is my phone or my watch.
how do you use ups track by reference??

Used my phone number to track iPhone 7+ Jet Black, 128 GB on UPS. It will be delivered by EOD Friday. I ordered at exactly midnight via phone. Great news!!
My references don't work so I think that's because no label was created yet. Ups doesn't say anything for me but congrats!!!

I just got a message from T-Mobile "Great news, we're ready to process your trade-in for your iPhone 7 order! You'll need to contact us anytime between 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. PST at 1-844-233-6086 to complete the trade-in."

What? I never mentioned that I was going to trade in". Anyone else got a similar message? I ordered the 7+ JB 256 GB. No charge yet to the CC. I will call now to find out what is going on.
Yes I called. They changed my credit card already and shipping date moved from 9/19 to 09/15 for two iphone 7 Plus black 256 and 128

I ordered the jet black 7+ 128 gig on the 9th at 6:30 p.m. central and signed everything in 10 minutes. I was given a estimated ship date of 11/1/2016 - 11/30/2016 , however I just received a text from T-mobile to contact them to complete the trade in process. This was unusual because there was not trade in when I signed for my phone. When I explained that to the CSR he informed me this is just the verbiage used in the text, but did say my device was ready to be shipped!

If it's your phone that gives all us 128 black + folks hope!

To all those saying they got a text about a trade-in it didn't indicate they were trading in.... Pretty sure if you pre-ordered an iPhone 7/7+ and they have your cell # you will get this automatically. I intend to trade in my 6 (actually 4 of em) but wasn't asked about it during order.

Ditto. Also, Ive ordered many phones...and while using the new phone, Tmo's website says "Order Processing"
If your status on their website has updated past "processing" feel lucky.
