You are right, with the At&t model, you are more then welcome to switch to any carrier that uses GSM.
Ok. Then they should update that right? My gripe is Apple says you can switch any carriers. No where in fine print also is it written that "if you are on a GSM carrier currently you can switch only to other GSM carrier". The way they say is. Switch to any.

The wordings say: "You aren't tied to a single carrier". How would you interpret that?

This is right. Not denying it. But I am specifically talking about iUP and their wording "You are not tied to a single carrier" on their iUP page!

You need to interpret it more carefully. You are not tied to a single carrier meaning if you have Verizon, you can switch to Sprint and if you have at&t, you can switch to T-Mobile. They've further qualified their statement with "and a multiyear service contract," meaning you're not tied in the form of a contract. Apple is obviously careful with their wording.

Either way, http://www.apple.com/shop/iphone/iphone-upgrade-program clearly states what we've been saying in this thread.

Apple never said you can switch to any carriers, only that you're not tied to a single carrier.

Online, no, but there seems to be a workaround in stores based on some members' reports.

Unfortunately, all this means is you do not have a contract with any single carrier, not that you're able to use said iPhone on any carriers.

Yeah. That won't work for me. Closest Apple Store is 2.5 hours away. I'd have to order online.

I'm on ATT now but want to order unlocked Verizon and put my ATT sim in.

Guess it may be another week or two before they offer sim free for sale.

Either my English is bad or this seems pretty same to me.
Not tied to a single carrier means I can use any other carrier. I wanna use Verizon instead of AT&T after 2months.
They should say that "if you are on a GSM network, then u can only switch to a GSM network."

You've forgotten that they've qualified their statement with "and a multiyear service contract."

They did say that regarding the at&t and T-Mobile models in the Q&A section of http://www.apple.com/shop/iphone/iphone-upgrade-program

They also say this
What happens to my carrier plan when I upgrade?
You can select a new wireless carrier or keep the one you have. We’ll activate your iPhone on your choice of AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, or Verizon. However, your iPhone will remain unlocked, so you can use it with other carriers in the future.

Right, other compatible carriers. They didn't say "any carriers."

They didn't have to qualify it since they've stated it elsewhere on that page. The point is they said "other carriers" and not "any carriers." The two have different meanings.
Lol. "Other" and "any" are same. Anyways I'll wait to hear from Apple :)

Any way of sourcing unlocked Verizon iPhone 7 without having Verizon account? Can't order it online at Apple.

Do you have to go through the Restore process to actually unlock an AT&T iphone7 bought on the Apple Upgrade program? I haven't been able to switch SIMS but the IMEI shows as not compatible on other carriers web sites.

You no longer need to go through the restore process to unlock an iPhone. You just need to pop in another SIM card from another provider. If you have the AT&T iPhone 7, you need a T-Mobile SIM.

Just an update. Got a call from Apple and they acknowledged that their iUP phones are supposed to work on any network (GSM or CDMA) and they have extended the return deadline till a Sim free compatible phone comes and they are gonna switch it then.
Thanks for all the advice :)

So the big question is: If you buy an unlocked Verizon iPhone and pop in an AT&T SIM, will it be able to use 3G and LTE for voice or LTE only? I ask because I have an older AT&T Femtocell and it uses 3G.

Nope, they're not the same. Why wait to hear from Apple when they've clearly stated in the Q&A that at&t and T-Mobile models can't be used with Verizon or Sprint?
This is the email i got from Apple acknowledging that iUP phones shld work on any carrier and their resolution for my case.

Today we discussed your options around the ATT phone purchased through our iPhone upgrade program and your ability to switch to CDMA coverage. We have reached out to Citizens One who has approved a return and restart of your loans (2 phones purchased) outside of the 13 day return policy. The best option we discussed is to wait for the sim free versions of your desired phones to be available in store so you can return and repurchase under the iPhone upgrade program. This will restart your loan and payment cycle through Citizens One.
Thank you!

Sounds like they made an exemption specifically for you. However, this indicates that you'll restart your loan, meaning you won't be eligible to upgrade by next iPhone launch unless you make some advance payments to bring it to 12 payments.

True yea. But the point being the exception was made coz they realized that incompatible was an issue.
