I was using my iPhone 7plus in the car today. It was charging and running waze (nav program). The outside temp. was 81 and air was on in the car. The iPhone 7 plus overheated and turned off giving overheating message. Before powering off the display got progressively darker until the phone completely powered down. I held the phone near the AC vent and it did finally "cool off" I have used every other iPhone in this same manner and have never had one power down due to overheating. The outside temp wasn't even that hot 81F. The phone did recover however I am somewhat concerned because I use my iPhones everyday for navigation in the car. I really can't have a phone that powered down at moderate temperature. I have an apt. with Apple tomorrow. Will let you know what they have to say.
Just got back from the Apple store. The phone heated up again while using WAZE and charging in the car. Outside temp. was 83F. Phone screen dimmed so dark that I was unable to see anything tried to close the app. but the screen touch was unresponsive. The screen remained dark for about 10 minutes...lucky I was at Apple and they were able to see how dark it had become. They ran diagnostics on the phone and did see that the heat sensor had triggered. They had no explanation for what was happening. They seem to feel that the phone is operating normally... I've never had any other iPhone perform like that. Bottom line, they are ordering a one time warranty replacement under my apple care. If it continues to happen they will try a software reload.

They should have just given you a new iPhone right then and there, you are within the 14 day window.

No need for you to use your warranty. What the heck is that place doing?

Wow, that should not be happening at all. I really hope that is not the norm. If it happens again, I would say return it. I could not deal with that.

Wait did they make you use one of your warranty replacement and pay? There is no way. There is something wrong with your phone.

That's what I told him. Even if they did not have that one in stock he is entitled to a replacement without warranty.

After about 10 mins, my screen on my 7 plus dimmed itself now its about 30% less bright then my 6 plus. After 2 hard resets its adjusted back not its dim again. Has to be a hardware issue, very aggravating

They didn't make me pay but they did say that if it happens again or continues they won't replace the phone because they feel that is "normal" operation. I don't feel that it's "normal" at all. I've used all my previous iPhones in the same location in my car and none of them have had issues.

I would say return. I would not put up with that. That is not normal at all.

I don't fell it's normal. They tried to say the case might be a problem (spigen black minimal case). They also said I shouldn't use the auto brightness that it should be turned off (why would they have auto brightness if you should have it turned off...) I wan't too happy with the one time replacement under warranty... it's almost a 1K phone!!! Really Apple!!!

Warranty repair? I would have just said I'm giving it back under the 14 day return policy and then order a new one if you want to. Therefore I would have another 14 day return policy with the new one.

Checked both my 6s+ and my 7+ against a bright sunlight sky today. This is when the 7+ screen is noticeably brighter. It never got brighter than my 6s+ until there was very bright light source. I'm satisfied now. :)

If it is as bright as your 6s under normal viewing inside then you are pretty well off. I don't think most of us are getting even that far, especially me.

Got my phone yesterday and it did the same thing all day. Bright at first then it dimmed after use. A hard reset would fix the problem, but it would dim again after 15 minutes or so. Strange thing is it hasn't done it once today and I've been using it constantly. No idea what's up. I have an appointment to get it checked out on Monday, but if it's still not doing it by then I might just keep it. Thoughts?

Only on auto can it get brighter than the 6/6s.
If auto is off and you have it all the way up, the 6 will always be brigther.

Im going to wait a couple days I'm not going to waste time with the driving to the apple store, might send back and wait a couple weeks i don't think they should be doing that out of the box, concerns me for $1000, i don't mind the warmer screen but the dimming at random is a issue. What are your thoughts?

Agree. It's a lot of money to spend to have issues. Think I'm going to keep my appointment and discuss the issues with them. However, if my phone continues to be normal and not dim anymore, I'll be tempted to keep it. With my luck I'd end up with a worse phone if I exchange it. If yours continues dimming I'd definitely exchange it. It was driving me crazy yesterday. No way I could put up with it.

I had the same issue yesterday. I was using my 7+ at the pool, temperature outside was mid 80s. The phone felt hot to the touch and the screen became VERY dim. I could barely see anything. I have used all my previous iphones in the same manner and temperature and have never had a problem. Something is definitely not right here. Going to make an appt at the apple store.

So I just did one last test with my 6S that I'm about to sell. I cranked both up to 100% while standing outside, auto brightness turned on. The iPhone 7 did appear to be brighter when viewed in bright sunlight. I think it all comes down to the phone limiting the brightness until it's absolutely needed. I'm ok with this.

I would too say that I am okay with this, but I would hope for Apple to better disclose this instead of leading us to believe that the screen is brighter in any and all situations.

Nothing a software tweak can't change. I agree with you though.

Maybe I'm giving Apple the benefit of the doubt here, but I suspect the only reason Schiller didn't explain it fully in the keynote is because they felt they didn't have the time to. The marketing online seems more interested in the wide colour gamut etc. also.

Then again, if Schiller had instead said, "and the display gets up to 25% brighter in situations where you need it most: outdoors, in bright sunlight" it would have saved a bunch of posts on here...

And I think that still comes off as a very nice feature to have. In trying to catch Apple out, posters here are ignoring the obvious: no one needs the iPhone to be 25% brighter indoors.

Since at least the 6, something is wrong if you set your iPhone to 100% brightness indoors, and feel like that's not bright enough. Let the new feature work when it's actually going to be useful.

Could it be the App causing the overheating? Maybe try Apple Maps and see if it happens again...Let us know.

Hmm. My screen is like "blue tint", not yellowish at all. But it is not as bright as my 6s. I tried under sunlight (auto brightness), still not bright enough. I could barely see in when I used as gps in my car. No issue for my 6s. Anyway I have an appointment this evening, I will keep you posted.

I went to the Apple Store today and found the exact same thing. Compared my iPhone 6S Plus to the iPhone 7 Plus, both with night shift off, both at 100% brightness.

iPhone 7 Plus was not only dimmer, but "bluish" (as I'm used to seeing Samsung Galaxy phones), compared to the pristine white and brighter display of my 6 Plus.
