I think the iPad Pro would be a better option.

My brother upgraded from the 6S to the 8 and doesn’t see much of a difference.

Going from the Air 2 to the Pro might be a bigger jump for you.

From 6/6s to 8 is actually a bigger upgrade. I’m amazed that your brother don’t see much difference.

Had a similar decision nearly 2 months ago. Had 128GB iPhone 6s (used mostly for music and iMessage/email/web) and a 2017 iPad 128GB (which was beginning to be used as a laptop replacement with ios 10).

Early September I could either upgrade to the 8 from the 6s, or upgrade to iPad Pro. Took the pro route as the iPhone 8 wasn’t offering enough of an upgrade over my 6s for what I use my phone for.

The Pro on the other hand is absolutely a laptop replacement for 95% of what I was using my 2011 MacBook Pro for. Web browsing, light productivity, music, web & mail, YouTube and now HDR iTunes Movie playback is just a killer combo. The next laptop will be a shared regular MacBook between my wife and I (she’s on a 2010 air at the mo) with her using it most of the time.

The Pro is a serious chunk of change so be sure it will meet your needs over an above the regular 2017 iPad. And be sure to budget for the Smart Keyboard cover - I’d consider it essential for laptop replacement duties.

He only uses it as a phone... messaging, email, calls plus some video (netflix) and ocasional games.

I don’t know how much improvement he would actually see given his use of the device.

I don’t think he is bothered about an app opening a fraction of a second slower.

How many people are gonna be able to afford a iPhone X ? So if people can stop giving iPhone X as a metaphor over a iPhone 8 for an iPad Pro 10.5" !

Ah those things are way too basic to see any difference on any phone to be honest.

I did both, went from a 7 to an 8 which is absolutely worth it.

But if you can only do one, then getting the new iPad 10.5 makes more sense.

Just curious what about 8 in particular?

True Tone, (I would upgrade for this alone) better camera, A11 chip, induction charging and the glass back (personal preference). Plus I got a good price on my 7. Made perfect sense to upgrade, that and having no interest in the X.

I would go for the Pro, but really think seriously about the size. If you can, I would suggest definitely getting the pencil - you may be surprised by just how much you use it. Also many people (including myself) have problems deciding between the 12.9 and 10.5. I have the 10.5 but every time I walk past a 12.9 on display I feel a longing for one... It's too late for me to change and I have cases, a bag etc for the one I have and love it, but when they next update, I'll probably get the big one.

Just from personal experience and from hearing from people here, it seems natural to wonder if the grass is greener. I wonder if it might be an idea to start with the 12.9, see if it feels 'too big' within the return period, leaving an option to downsize to the 10.5, rather than the other way around.

I have the 7plus and I also couldn't afford to upgrade both the phone and iPad this year, but the iPad is so much bigger and better and you can do more with it. Also, if you're concerned with screen real estate, the iPad Pros win hands down over an 8, 8 plus or an X.

You'll have to go with your heart on this one, good luck.

This is a community last time I checked, asking advice from other community members is sort of what we do here isn't it?

I wrestled with the same choice, though my husband was giving me negative kickback over spending 1K on an iPhone X. I decided to upgrade the device I use most. My current 6S Plus is great but it goes right on the charger when I get home & out comes the iPad so my choice is made. Now bring on the holiday sales!

rowspaxe is right. Cmon, it is ridiculous that the OP made this thread to begin with comparing devices with quite different purposes. It is almost the same as asking, “hey, should I buy a fridge or a car?”. Well, I don’t know, do you need a fridge or a car?

What are you doing that does leverage the full power of the phone to the extent you can see the difference between a 6s and an 8 beyond maybe a slightly more immediately responsive interface? Genuinely curious...

To the OP, honestly if you have a bit of cash spare why not save it up, put some more with it in the new year and splurge on a X or something? Or wait a bit longer for the third gen pros and iPhone XI? Sounds like you fall firmly in the want rather than need category so you’ll be more pleased the bigger the difference when you do get your new device. Something that’s more or less the same experience but maybe a little snappier and with the odd rarely seen/ used upgrade isn’t going to satisfy your want for something new. If you must upgrade to something new right now, the iPad probably offers the bigger difference, but it still probably won’t be enough to be more than a 5 minute novelty.

The following tasks will definitely show the difference. I own the 8+ though.

- I develop on the device.
- I do 3D rendering.
- Play graphics intense games.
- Edit pictures and videos.
- Playing around with metal these days.
- Take pictures. (You can’t deny the picture quality difference between a 6S and a 8+)

These along with the other basic stuffs that the OP has mentioned.

Also iOS 11 feels a tad snappier.

I suggest you to buy 12.9/10.5 inch iPad Pro 2nd Generation, they are equipped with the most advanced display on the planet with 120Hz refresh rate and a A10X Fusion Chip which is more powerful than most PC laptops.

i have an iPhone 7 and iPad Air 2. My budget does not allows for one purchase between the iPhone 8 and the iPad Pro 10.5'? Which seems like a better option. I'm not really sure I would buy an Apple Pencil, just to clarify. Thanks.
Ik had an Air 2 and iPhone 7 (which I still use). I got the 10.5 pro, so my advice is to get the iPad.

Talking the husband into taking me to Best Buy today...lol, might even play the cancer card I do need a new tempered glass screen protector for my phone so I might just wander off to the Apple section while I wait :)

I'm one of the gadget geeks that likes to upgrade every year. It's not a cheap way to be, so I offset the costs of the new by selling the old. The nice thing is, these products hold value very well.

If you look to see the resale values and trade in values, it may allow you to get both if you want. But I will echo what many have said. Having the iPhone 8 AND the iPad Pro 10.5, the upgrade features from Air to Pro are much greater than the upgrade from 6s or 7 to the 8, you are looking primarily at a speed bump which isn't a significant blow your mind difference in speed unless your going from regular size to Plus sizes, then your upgrades will be more significant regarding speed, RAM, camera, etc.

With the iPad Pro 10.5, your talking speed bump plus superior display, ProMotion, and ability to upgrade accessories as they may meet your needs. Either way, these are great decisions to have to make :)

Have you come to an idea on what your leaning towards at this point?

Since you already have an iPhone 7, and the 8 doesn't bring that much to the table, I think the iPad is a better option imo. Go with that. Since this thread is over 10 days old, did you make a decision?

After some time, I’m responding to this thread.

I postponed making a decision and didn’t buy anything. For some who said that I only use my devices for basic things, I’m an engineering and business student who is studying processors and coding for iOS apps at the moment. I try to maximize on the processor and cameras (I do photography on the side with DLSR/digital cameras). The decision making was hard at the time because I can accomplish different things with the devices.

Also, it is pointless to call out any user on wants versus needs and trying to make any user feel guilty for posting something that you feel is ridiculous, that is only on you. It is not wrong to ask someone else for their opinion especially when it concerns people or money. Asking the for the advice of fellow users in deciding which Apple products best benefits the buyer is certainly in scope of a valuable topic. I may not “need” to buy either device, but they are definitely device I get concrete benefits from. I know my question is a want, not a need; but I don’t need anyone to be rude to me (or any other poster) because of it. For those of you who want to waste time and energy writing negetive posts, that’s what 4chan is for.

To resolve this forum from a couple of months ago, I’m going with the iPhone 8 or 8+.

I didn’t see any comments as rude or anything. You asked for help and people gave it. Some people are just more blunt than others. No one also said that you use your device for basic things.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I did find some comments uneccessary and took away from the point of this thread, imposing negative viewpoints on how pointless they feel this thread is. Users have the right to express themselves however they want, but it shouldn’t ever be at the expense of someone else’s positive experience. If a person doesn’t like the topic, just don’t post and move on to another thread instead of imposing negativity.

Internet forums like these are discussion forums. As long as nobody offends you I don’t see a problem with posting a viewpoint that you feel is negative. Forums carry all kinds of responses. If you don’t want negativity at all maybe don’t go looking for other people’s opinions then.

Just because you can say something doesn’t always mean you should.
