I am very lost.. I was really looking forward to the iPhone being released this past fall, but when apple released the iPhone 8 (that looks just like the past 3 phones) next to the iPhone X (that's very expensive, doesn't have touch ID - which I prefer, and I have heard is buggy), I didn't know what to do. I still don't know what to do.. Or if I even want to.. I have a iPhone 5s right now that's running ok... It just doesn't have a lot of space left... I've thought I would be getting a new iPhone as soon as it came out, but I'm really underwhelmed now... Which do you guys prefer as an upgrade? Or should I just wait until 2018 and see what comes out then??

If I had the money I’d do the ip8.. or wait till next fall to see what’s next.. I prefer TouchID but that’s me.. my 6s+ still working fine on 11.2 so I’m in no hurry..

What I would suggest, is experience both iPhones if you can in the store. Find out specifically what you like and dislike about both models, which I know you mentioned you prefer touch ID. I don't think the iPhone X is glitchy. Everybody else's experience will vary.

2018 is still a long ways out. If you want to upgrade now, find out what you like the best and what you can afford, and then go from there.

What are your priorities? The X has optical image stabilization on both lenses so that makes for better low light performance all around than the 8. You will get some shots at night that you might not otherwise get on the 8. Oh and iPhone 8 has only one lens anyway. The X has a very handy 2x zoom that I use quite a bit.

The displays on the X’s are a mixed bag. Some people are having trouble with eye fatigue on the OLED because it uses something called pulse width modulation to turn the pixels off and on faster than your eye is supposed to register. But some people can feel the effects of the flicker in the form of eye strain or worse, a migraine. Even people who have never had a migraine before. I am a migraine sufferer but only get eye strain and it’s not horrible.

Also the displays can come with irregular tints or can change color to a blue tint as you change your viewing angle. This is referred to as “color shifting” or “blue shifting”. My husband’s display does this but mine does not. However, my display has a small pink tint all around the edges of the display. I’m currently trying to decide if I’m bothered enough to try and return it for this reason. At first I was sure I was going to but I’ve since seen worse OLED variations and may just let it slide. OLED is wonderful for looking at photos and videos but this iteration of it is not the optimal display for reading on. I still read ebooks on my 7 Plus, honestly.

Face ID is very good. Just in the last couple of days I’ve had a bit of lag on mine and had to input my code. But each time it fails and you input the code it is supposed to be learning how to identify you from that angle or whatever change it was that caused the failure.

I really enjoy the swiping and do not miss the home button at all. I find it extremely convenient to be able to access the camera and flashlight from the lock screen.

I like the size of the X.

I think the advantages the 8 Plus has over the X include a longer battery life, a very refined LCD display with a good consistent implementation of True Tone (on my X it’s either yellow or salmon pink, yuck) and a more palatable purchase and repair price. The iPhone 8 won’t have the battery advantage. The X falls somewhere between the 8 and the 8 Plus in that respect.

I hope I’ve provided some information as objectively as possible. Good luck with your decision.

Three week owner. I agree, not buggy. Very different, but not buggy.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention that. iOS 11.whatever (I’ve had a couple of versions since I got this phone) has been pretty smooth on the X. It’s been nice and fast bringing up apps and I had only one app crash so far and that was the new Animal Crossing game.

Two thoughts on scanning the face.

First, have you tried a two-button (I guess is three buttons now on the X) reset?

Second, I tried a re-scan all the way at arm's length. My face seemed sort of small in the circle, but I think the speed and the camera's tolerance for wider angles may have gone up. I want to emphasize that it wasn't bad at all before, though.

Agree, very bug free. I t think the only one I've encountered is the home screen click, which actually has no effect on me because my phone is always set on silent/vibrate.

If you have concerns with either phone and you are not in dire need of a new phone, then there is nothing wrong with waiting until the next year’s release. Plenty of people are waiting because there simply wasn’t a clear choice for them this time around.

Just know that while there will be low cost options available going forward in the form of older models and a possible new form factor with less features next year, the higher price point for the latest, top feature models are here to stay.

Also, FaceID is replacing TouchID. There’s no going back. For 2018, signs point to only the older phones (6/7/8) having TouchID. If you really would rather have TouchID, you can get an 8/8 Plus now or wait until next year to see if a newer release features TouchID. If not, you could purchase the 8/8 Plus at a cheaper price point.

You could also try the X out and return it before the return period is up. Just don’t trade or sell your current phone just in case you do decide the X isn’t for you. But if you know it’s not what you want, don’t bother and just wait until next year.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this! I'm going to take my time and read as many responses to this question on this post and others as I can.. These phones are just getting too expensive not to.

You’re welcome. One thing I forgot to mention is that Face ID currently doesn’t work in landscape mode and not all apps are updated to accommodate the Notched display yet. But every day I find more and more of my apps updated for the X. The pace of updating is quite reasonable.

I opted for the 8 over the X. I'm getting pretty much what I am used to. Runs similar components to the X. And it was $300 less. I looked at them side by side and just couldn't justify the $300.

you could also just scroll through a few pages of the forum. the same question gets asked about every 12 hours.

I love the X. My previous was the 7. My wife uses it now.

When I occasionally pick it up, I think how pedestrian.

You keep tweaking my memory, GM! I just want to say...

that in my opinion...

THE NOTCH...

is an utter non-issue. I understand that others disagree, either on practical or purist terms. It doesn't affect any app I use, and to the purists I would just say: where are you going to put that hardware today? Maybe in three years you can put it under the display and get good results beaming and scanning through the display, but not today; would a full top bezel be better, like all the top Android phones?

BTW/FWIW, VLC was updated today for the X/notch.

I have a thread on FaceID already.
For me, FaceID has been absolutely 100% flawless. Never ever failed not even once (and I have a 7 Plus and I can not say the same about TouchID on it. For me, TouchID has not been 100% flawless).
Anyway, FaceID has worked for me with my contacts, without my contacts, with my glasses, without my glasses, with my sunglasses, without my sunglasses and all those combos outside, inside, during bright days and in very dim rooms. It works with my phone sitting flat on my tv coffee table, I don’t even have to pick it up.
For me, FaceID on my X has been much more reliable than TouchID on my 7 Plus.

not buggy at all
touch ID is better than FaceID...but the X screen is better than the iPhone 8 screen. Tradeoff

We all know the word "better" is subjective when it comes in comparison to touch ID and Face ID based on one's preferences and experiences. But I do agree that the X display has stronger color saturation and the blacks are more true with OLED, Even though I do think Apple has some of the best LCD panels in the Smart phone industry with their own calibration.

I had many of the same questions as you do. I prefer Touch ID but I liked the design of the previous iterations of the iPhone. I went with the 8. It has the glass back, wireless charging, and the same A11 Bionic processor that the X has. Plus the added benefit of being cheaper. The 8 is a great and very fast phone. My only regret is that it does not have a headphone jack but I do not want to relitigate that again. I don’t think you could go wrong with either phone as the X is a great phone. The 5s has been a beast of a phone but an 8 or X will be a huge upgrade either way. Go with what you think will make you happy.

I went through basically the same decision. I waited until both the X and the 8 were available in the Apple Store so I could spend time with each. I was actually hoping to like the X enough to buy it, but in the end decided on the 8. $300 is a big premium to pay for the X, especially for someone like me who is not at all into taking photos. The extra display size did not seem all that useful and it comes along with noticeably extra weight. The 8 is a beautiful phone with the glass back, A11 processor, and many of the same features as in the X. Touch ID is fine with me. So what I was expecting to be a difficult decision turned out to be an easy one.

I played with both and could easily afford both. I got the 8 for 2 reasons. I adore the screen on the x, it's much nicer than the 8 or 8+ for sure.
1. The x didn't seem like a "finished" product and even the sales person agreed with me there. It seems like it's still a work in progress, and I can have almost the same guts of the x for $300 cheaper in a " finalised" product version. If the 8+ wasn't so huge I would have went with that, but my hands are tiny so the 8 is almost too big as it is.

2. I didn't want to have to deal with buying first gen accessories for the x.
