If the 50" was high res, you'd probably need hdmi connectors. I heard that the 30" display was pushing it w/ dual link dvi. But if the 50" came out w/ the highest resoltion possible, think how big that would be!

1) HDMI and DVI are exactly the same thing as far as video signal is concerned. HDMI is simply a different form factor for the DVI spec where they add digital audio signal lines to the cable to make it easier for Joe 6-pack to plug in his new devices.

2) Large monitors are rarely as high DPI as smaller ones. It would likely be the same resolution, or lower than the 30" as they would want to maximize sales (and therefor must be a "low" cost unit that most people can afford, or imagine being able to afford).

RED Camera Connection Revisited

Seems like there was some speculation about whether extra large Apple displays could be connected to support for the large formats produced by the forthcoming RED Cinema Camera.

Final Cut 4k? Shake can already handle it, but Motion would probably need an octo-core Mac Pro as a minimum spec

Why is a 50" monitor/tv out of the realm of possibility? I mean, high-margin consumer electronics are Apple's bread and butter. Consider it part of a hopeful "iTV halo" :)

Yep - that's what I'm thinking - an Apple Branded TV that you can hook your iTV up to. It will probably also have a built in iSight for "fireside chats." My guess is that once Leopard is released with full resolution independence you'll be able to use Apple's 50 inch as your HDTV as well as a kick a$$ monitor for OS X.

I just don't see an Apple TV/ monitor that large being profitable. I certainly would not look at one as a TV just because it's Apple when there are so many well established TVs out there. I don't know that's just me...

If Apple are going to release a 50inch display, it is going to be an LCD monitor. There just isn't the market for an Apple TV.

Although if this is true, it will mean Apple is going to introduce streaming of BluRay and HD-DVD movies from your Mac to the iTV. Last time I checked, it was part of the BluRay/HD-DVD spec and the iTV has a HDMI connector.

Apple is going to try to own the living room starting Q1 of 2007. A "good, better, best" (ie: iTV, iTV+TV, iTV+TV+Mac) gear pricing structure would probably make sense and provide the total integrated package that Steve Jobs loves so much. A nice integrated clean look for the living room. Probably wouldn't sell a ton but the WOW factor in the Apple Stores would be undeniable.

For all the skeptics out there I would think again...

Consider how Apple is blending the computer and the home into one.

A 50-inch moniter can also be a 50 inch HDTV connected to an 'iTV'

Also this can explain the reason of no composite or S-video ports on the iTV...

Lastly, there have been many things Apple has done when at first people said Apple was crazy but it turned out to be a success : i.e. the iPod

I find it easier to believe the iPhone or even the true video ipod before a 50" plasma by apple.

What would that be priced at? $100,000?

Well maybe not a 50 inch plasma exactly how it is being described but some product like that.

The iPhone is no rumor... It will be a reality in 3 months I say.

Huh? Plasmas dominate the market above 42". It is extremely (prohibitively) expensive to make large LCD screens. LCD screens don't handle fast paced motion (crucial for sports and movies) nearly as well as plasmas (because of slower refresh, LCD becomes blurry where image is changing rapidly), and plasma screens are rated to last around 62,000 hours before burn-in problems. Do some research.

Sorry, plasma is a borndead technology. Large LCDs are reaching the same price level for above-42" as plasmas, they consume a LOT less energy and have ZERO burn-in problems.

50"? no way.
a 42" iMacTV? in my dreams, but maybe. just maybe. 37" would still be more plausible. oh well, we'll wait and see. all i care about is the C2D superdrive entry level MB.

50" is too big for a moniter. I have craning my neck with a 30". I visited the Apple store recently and my mum now wants a 30" ACD as a telly!  :D

50 inch is WAY too big!! although even though I doubt the Iphone will come out it does look pretty cool

The 50" "display" that's been talked about for over a year is not a monitor... it's a television. A 50" TV is certainly big, but it's not ridiculous. There are plenty of plasmas and rear projection TVs that are bigger than 50".

50" Display is not impossible and may just end up being a standard which Dell and others will eventually follow. If i told back in 1999 that Apple would release a 30" display...you wouldnt believe me, yet some can't live without one today

I think this is an Apple created rumor.

In my opinion it is so far fetched...

Now I would be a a "37 or "42 screens, but not a "50.

I'd love to see a 50" 1080p TV from Apple but I'd never be able to afford it. I really don't care if it doesn't come out. I think it's all made-up and just a conjecture proposed by a fanboy/so-called "analyst."

I want my iPhone.. :D

Why would it be so farfetched? I don't understand why people are still so skeptical of Apple rumors and successes that they would completely rule them out, after all the times people said "they won't release that" or "that will never sell" and have been proved wrong with iPod, a video playing iPod, iTunes movies... etc. Dell and HP sell TVs and considering Apple will be the 3RD largest manufacturer of computers (in the U.S.) next year, why wouldn't Apple give it a shot. A sleek, Apple-designed 50" television sounds perfect; designed to go hand-in-hand with iTV + iMac + iTunes.

Nowadays, I would never rule out any feasible Apple rumor: iPhone, digital camera... Not saying they'll all happen, will be successful, or are even true, but I wouldn't RULE IT COMPLETELY OUT or say it will NEVER happen/take off.

...and yet Apple continues to sell stand-alone displays and make a profit from them, when there are plenty of other manufacturers that make fine displays.

I don't think this is so farfetched. JVC and Samsung make 46" LCD TVs at something like the MacBook resolutions, and yet they sell for $3000 to $3500. I think Apple is capable of making a comparable product. Apple has already proved that it can make excellent displays, which while they might be pricey, are amongt the best-quality available.

If Apple were to make a 50" LCD display, priced around $3000, with a distinctive Apple style (either white plastic like a huge iMac or metal like the Cinema displays), I predict it would become their best-selling display.
