I have a quick question. After fully discharging the battery, the Apple site states that the phone may not be operable for 2 minutes after charging has started. I've only fully discharged 2x now, but each time the phone needs at least an hour before I can use it. Does anyone else have this issue? As far as I can tell, this is the only battery issue my phone has.
Thanks in advance,
Mick

how do you fully drain the battery after initially charging it and topping it off?
do i let it sit there on standby for days?
or do i pay and fiddle with it all day until it dies?
im just being cautious because im getting a 3G for christmas and i dont want to ruin the battery.

To discharge, I would load up a couple long movies, and keep playing them with the volume and brightness turned up, 3G and Push turned on as well.

Make sure to keep charging an hour or two after it says its full when recharging.

Hi everyone...
I got a new apple iPhone 3G a few days ago..and just wondering how long the battery should actually last? Because I've been charging every 2 days.Yesterday I tried to not use it as much as possible.. i.e not using web browser, checking emails, using GPS etc.
I also turned off my wi-fi and 3G..but battery seems to drain rather quickly still. Is that normal?

Yours is actually better, my battery lasts only till the end of the day and right when I'm about to enter my car and drive back home I have to charge it, else it will be 25% soon. I have to charge mine everyday, cause I use it often.

I recharge every 2 days with similar usage. I also have Bluetooth turned off, given that iPhone Bluetooth does almost nothing other than drive a BT headset (I can't use most of them), there is no point for me to even use it.

Question:

If you are in an area with wifi for a long time (like at home) then shouldn't you disable 3G???

Simply because the iPhone disconnects from wifi when it sleeps. It quickly reconnects when you wake it.

So while the phone is sleeping, it's using the cellular network and 3G drains the battery more.

Thanks...

I might be repeating what others have already said but thanks for the information. It's stuff like this that keeps forums alive. I'm on Step #3 now. :)

Is anyone aware of an iphone app that could display stuff like cycle count and other battery info. I was thinking something like the " ioreg -l | grep Capacity " command in UNIX that allows one to check battery info on Apple notebooks. I think this would be a great feature for Apple to add in a future iphone update and it would be much more informative than knowing just usage and standby times.

None so far, I believe it's because of SDK limitations.

Syncing cord

Is it ok if i charge the iphone with an old ipod nano's synching cord? i just plug the USB cord into the new Iphone 3g charger piece. is that ok or does the cord change the voltage? newb.

Reusing the USB sync cable from an iPod is fine, they're all identical. I used my sister's iPod Nano cable numerous times of the Christmas holidays.

I vote this as the most useful, informative thread on these forums. :)

I just got my 3G about a week ago and haven't done a full discharge/charge cycle. Glad I got a little time to sit and read today at work.

I got the iphone 3g a couple of weeks ago and I found this thread to be very useful and followed instructions to fully charge and discharge after I got the phone. Everything was fine and I believe I was getting good battery life. Since yesterday i have having an issue. The battery was at around 60% yesterday around 5pm and I was using the phone to check news, then I did not use the phone and at night when I wanted to set the alarm the, the battery was almost drained. I charged it to full this morning and after an hour now its at 66%. I went to bosspref and I just realized that my email was set to ON on Bosspref, I have now switched that to OFF.

Also, the battery indicator on the home screen is shown in whote color, but whenever I go into setting or any other application it shows as green. Any suggestions

White color you say? I've only seen it green and it has been always like that, you might want to consult Apple with that, give 'em a call.

The battery is always going to be white in color on your homescreen. When you open an application it's going to show as green. What you're seeing is normal.

I am getting an iPhone 3G but will be using it in an area that lacks 3G altogether. I mainly want the 3G over the original because of the extra storage capacity and the GPS.

Based on the testing in the first post, would it be generally fair to say that if you turn off the 3G, but otherwise use your phone exactly like the iPhone 2G, that you will get better battery life?

I know that this depends on whether you use the GPS extensively, etc. Lets say you leave the GPS on all the time. Better or worse battery life than the original?

I know its not an exact science, but thanks for your thoughts.

From what I've experienced, the battery life on the 3G is well below that of the first gen, even with everything off. That could be because it's newer and will improve with use but if you have the GPS on at all it's going to be worse no matter what.

Thank, lots of great information.

I just got an iPhone 3G and still am confused about one thing.

When you plug your iPhone into the wall to be charged overnight do you just let it go to sleep or do you turn it off?

Does it charge differently in sleep mode as opposed to being turned off?

I had drained the battery last night to calibrate, and I turned it off after plugging it in to be charged.
I turned it on occasionally to see if it was charged.
It took four hours before the big green battery appeared on the screen.

Thanks

When charging your iPhone, does anybody else's phone get really hot when it is plugged in and charging?

When I use some games app while charging, yes it does get hot a little bit. Other than that it's normal - charging while docked and playing iPod/internet radios.

Question: I've tried from a fully charge to drain the battery in my iphone but cant seem to get it to 0%. Usually from a full charge I drain the battery in my iphone(by turning on location services, push, fetch 15mins, 3G, Bluetooth, and turn the brightness to 100%, and having a movie playing), I get my two messages "20% remaining", "10% remaining" and then it shuts off by itself. However, I can then turn it back on in 5-10mins and start my movie again and have it play for a few mins, I'll say somewhere between 3-15mins. Then it shuts itself off, and again, I can turn it back on in a few mins.
My question is, if I just leave it alone the first time it shuts itself off and let it sit overnight (8ish hours). Then plug it in and let it charge to 100% and leave it plugged in for 2 hours, will my battery gauge then be "calibrated"? OR since I'm not actually able to get it to 0%(Since it obviously has some juice left since I can turn it back on) does that just show that my battery gauge is really inaccurate? If thats the answer and my batt gauge is really messed up how can I fix it? Do I just keep doing the steps above?
This maybe confusing, lol. If it is, sorry!
