What would be great is if Apple just did a BBM type thing but you could message anyone for free. Good FU to att.

...and guess what? The BBM app is being updated as week too...

sorry i had to stick that one in :D

imo the only work-around is, buy a blackberry and a touch... best of both worlds...thats what i did.

As far as everything else is concerned, I think that the iPhone is far superior to the Blackberry and iTouch seperately - it's an iPod and a phone...you don't need to carry two things around with you..

And also  what do you mean BBM is being updated this week?

What are they updating?

completely redoing the interface on it so it doesn't look like its from 1997. I am coming over to Iphone from BB the past few years, and will miss BBM but the iphone as much more going for it at this point i feel. If BB totally revamped their OS, I mean a complete restructuring similar to what WebOS is now to Palm, I could consider going back.

I love BBM. Really miss it. If you haven't used it then you just don't understand

I miss BBM as well. Thats the only thing I miss about my Blackberry Curve :( but im sure apple will give us an alternative , just as im sure apple will allow us to place wallpapers on our homescreen

Use to miss it.

I miss it also but the same ppl send me txt's now so I have not lost out on any communication between any of my BBM contacts. I never used the Group Chat so it's not that big of a deal anymore.

This seems completely unnecessary.

There is no need for an iphone only instant messaging application.

As many noted there are plenty of apps that do this and let you talk to anyone else with an iphone, or a bonus, with a computer or other potential devices.

I don't want that..

What is the need to be connected to about 5 different services like AIM, MSN etc. when there is no need..

Something simple like BBM is definitely better than having everything bundled into one App - I don't use AIM/MSN etc. so what is the need to have the option to use them there?

Why are you sure Apple will give an alternative? There's no indication or precedent that they will. Further, they might have doing something like that prohibited in their contract with ATT...

No.

I bring up this example in every thread that bashes BBM.

When my cousin lived on res in the States, he got himself a BlackBerry. I purchased a BlackBerry and INSTEAD OF PAYING $0.35 FOR INTERNATIONAL TEXTS, I was able to quickly message him on BBM. "Free" (if you have data) for both of us.

Why was this good? 2 solid reasons:

1. He always has his phone on him, I know I can reach him at any time.
2. If he forgets to sign into MSN/AIM on his phone, I CAN STILL REACH HIM (you can signed off when you sign in on your computer) as BBM stays logged in the entire time.

Actually, BBM is one of the things I miss most about my BlackBerry. If you've never had it, you think people are just being whiney. But it really is a great app. Yeah, you could open up an IM app but that would kill the battery if you were logged in all the time. Actually, both users would have to be logged in so....even with the new push notif, it's not the same. Plus you could BBM anyone else anywhere in the world w/o additional costs and I found that very useful.

I think AT&T could really please iPhone business users and gain new ones by offering free iPhone to iPhone texting if they really want to compete on the BB level though without PIN's, I don't know how they would be able to track that around the world.

I love love love my iPhone. But if I could add BBM to it, I totally would.

I've never had a blackberry, but this is how i feel as well.

I especially hate when people go on facebook and as there status say pin:XXXXXXX...IT PISSES ME OFF SO MUCH lol

Its a great service, hats of to RIM, Apple really needs something like this. 3.0 is one step closer to it with push notifications. I say 4.0 may have it.

Well surely this would be possible with 3.0 because push notifications can be sent even if the app is not running?

Can anyone confirm this?

Then technically that means that something like BBM is possible on the iPhone - just someone needs to make the app, and make sure that every iPhone has it..right?

Blackberries with BBM is the most attracting fuction to me.It is so cool. But as apple introduced us with it's latest i phone i think they should make something like BBM.So they can have more customers who likes BBM.Thats the business policy.

Well apple is building a giant server farm in NC(I think that is where). So you may have your wish. I think it should just be integrating in the sms app though. No need to launch 2 apps just for text messaging.

we just added chat and app went live today. it is exactly like BBM but for iphone. in fact, it is even better since there is no PIN to exchange. will update itunes app store description and screen shots later.

note for special people: just like BBM requires the other party to have BBM, whatsapp requires the other party to also have whatsapp.

sorry for double post. doesn't seem that there is a way to delete a message. anyways... if you and your friends have tried the app, we would love to hear feedback.

Does it log you in when you start up your phone?

If not, then it's not like BBM.

I glanced at the web page and the app looks like it holds some promise. It looks like it works with Blackberries as well so those people with friends who have blackberries it will work with as well.

That being said apple may need to do something like this nativity because as long as it is downloaded it does limit its effectiveness.
