I use the Messi.im app. It WAS free initally, but is now 99 cents I think . Anyway, its great app, a bit better than Whatsup app, since you can send your location and a picture too.

Push notification?
Message Receipts?
Typing notification?

If so then I may take a look. :D

Silly (or not silly question)

Is there a way to "log out"? Or is that seen as not necc like you wouldn't "log out" of SMS

In other words - can I turn off/logout of the whatsapp server so I am "dead" to the app until I want to "rejoin" the network?

I know these are more IM client terms and not SMS - but your app crosses both "lines"...

I sent a few tips off to some of the tech news sites about this just to see if anyone would bite, but I'm sure it's tough to get their attention. I think this app really scratches an itch that a lot of us have and that a lot of others don't understand why a plain IM app just won't do.

I really hope this takes off big. Great simple interface, and by the way, I think the pictures and locations are a nice feature, but I'm sort of glad that they aren't a part of this app. I just want to do one simple thing with an app for once instead of having it balloon into a multi-purpose, multi-platform bloat-fest.

Turn off Push messaging for the app. Then you won't be bothered.

there is really no "offline" or "log out" concept. as somebody mentioned, you can go into iPhone OS Settings app, go into Notifications and configure how (if at all) you want to be notified: alerts, badges, sounds:

i think you are in the minority. and honestly so am i. i personally don't see a need for a group chat or image xfer, but majority of the people want it and we are going to put those features in... and who knows, maybe group chat will turn out to be really cool:)

but what i can promise you is that those additional features will not take away from the simplicity of the UI or from the stability of the app. i am pretty OCD when it comes to UI and performance:)

Messi DOES have push notifications and works very well. Since it is more of an SMS /MMS replacement, it doesn't have receipts or typing notification, but for my purposes, it doesn't need them.

well the obvious reason to allow sending pics and/or vids is to "compete" with MMS... and since the app and send/rec is free - it's a natural progression

ETA: I'd love to see landscape mode too

Ok cool. So it's a competitor with TextPlus! :D

We're discussing a BBM replacement which has these additional features SMS and MMS do not have. It's pretty much the only advantage to BBM over SMS/MMS IMHO (Too many acronyms!!!)

i think landscape chat should come before group messaging. With group messaging the screen will get filled up very quickly and a lot of scrolling will be required. The landscape texting will allow for more of the messages to be viewed. Plus it is quicker and easier to landscape message.

we just finished 2.1 version which is mostly minor bug fixes and enhancements release.

we will try and put landscape mode into the 2.2 release, but we also plan to have group chat in 2.2, so both will probably happen in the same release.

wohoo! well done guys!

as you aren't charging yet, do you take donations?
i feel bad using the app for free given the amount of money it is saving me! my bill is £45/month plus a further ~£30 in international texts and ~£20 in international calls.

LOL, no need to feel bad:)

just keep on spreading the word... that and mentions on FB/twitter beats any donation for us.

I was just about to ask about this. I had a chance to use this with my co-workers but I did not receive an alert. I did not even think to check the notifications.

Thanks for this app, its great. Now if we can just filter out the naysayers from this thread, every thing would be real cool :p

regarding notifications, please see:

also sometimes apple just doesn't deliver push notifications at all (or delivers them late). sadly, as developers, we have no viability or acknowledgment of any kind telling us if notification was delivered or not.

that will never happen! We need naysayers to bring about change and progress, but i do agree with you! More constructive criticism would be great.

i would love for this app to eventually be bought by apple/supported by apple so that it becomes synonymous with the iPhone, just like a BBM with the blackberry!

Who knows, in a few years, BBM might be obsolete once cross-platform messaging is set up

Thanks, but based on the screen shot, I have now turned everything on. So I should be good to go. I am alerting my co-workers that they need to do the same.

Absolutely brilliant app. Been using it the passed two days and its fantastic. I must say, two big 'can't waits' for me in this app are read receipts and landscape mode.

Also one thing that bothers me is the navigation at the bottom. I think that it you should have chats before contacts, especially considering if a contact downloads it, they automatically join you favourites list.

Love the app though, any news on when you may add chat to the blackberry app as loads of my friends bought blackberrys, mainly for BBM, and altho I love the exclusivity thing with iPhone to iPhone chat, considering the app is already available on Blackberrys, it would be nice to chat to them aswell.

Great job though, the app has made the first page of my iPhone which is normally reserved for official apps, plus Facebook and Beejive! Can't believe its not in the top 200 free apps on iTunes though. It needs to somehow be publicised.

Question for the developer

is push tied to the phone # or something else?

I ask because when you "register" the first time you run the software it asks for the person's phone number. Wanting it to work - I, of course, put mine in. But what if I put someone else's in? Would it still work? Could that block someone else from ever using the app? Just curious about the app security/method of delivery there. Not asking you to divulge any secrets.. just if any of the above could be issues?

thanks for the positive feedback.

landscape will happen sooner (most likely in 2.2) and read receipts will most likely go into 2.3

there is a reason why Favorites and Contacts are where they are in the tab bar. that is how Phone.app arranges them. usually when we have a question about how to do something with a UI, we go look at how apple did it for their apps:)

While we are doing our best, BlackBerry chat is at least a couple of month away.

well, i hope we can crack top 200 soon. we only been out for a few days thought.

i think you might have just unearth the biggest flaw of this program!

jkb- does apple allow you to pull the number from the number stored on the sim card? or is that not in the sdk?

Suggestion to the developer:

Add time/date stamps to all messages incoming and outgoing if possible. When not near the device - it's nice to know when the last message came in. Or to track time between responses, etc.

Pretty sure that's not possible. A lot of Apps have to ask for the phone number.

yes, that is already on our todo list
