There's been some really great responses to my original post, thanks for all of your input. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one in this position, although in terms of moving to Android or another competing smartphone, I fear I've potentially shot myself in the foot.

All of my music (except for a small number from a previous service) is purchased on iTunes. That being the case, if I move over to an Android device the next time, I'm slightly concerned that I'll be unable to synchronise my purchases with an Android device (they're not iTunes plus, subsequently) or that my music will refuse to play on the new device. I can't say I'm fussed about the loss of Genius data or lyrics.

I don't foresee a one-size-fits-all solution to my predicament!

I'm not bored of the hardware design ... its simple and functional and is compatible with most accessories i already have .... for me its all about the software and 3 years after it was, to much reverie, introduced the home-screen layout is now looking a bit simple

It needs a fresh new look, better notification interface (bottom of screen ticker or pull-down page) but i'm generally happy with the phone still

I suspect there's a dissappointment coming...

The success of Apple products is not in adding bells and whistles and satisfying the 'needs' of fanboys (like myself). Rather it is in making a device functionally simple and design conscious so that it appeals to the vast najority of people. This drives sales volume. The design drives premium pricing. That equals fat profits for Apple.

I think the challenge is not to go ahead to head with Android et al. It will be to maintain the balance betweenform and function.

I see it with the ipod - simple, and hugely popular. Lots of other devices had more features but ipod wiped them out. Same thing with the iphone and I suspect with the ipad too (a simple way to engage the masses with web/apps).

I suspect Apple will continue to innovate with the iphone but Iwouldn't see them making it 'too complicated' for the masses.

Interesting to see if they can satisfy both types of user groups without scaring one off.

I was in the same boat and have jumped ship a couple of times with a blackberry and recently a palm pre. What can I say the small annoyances with these phone and the OS. Thee was always an empty feeling. I used them for over a month at a time and convinced my self that these were better but in the end the simplicity and the fact that for me it simply worked was over whelming and i just brought a new iphone 3gs last week again.

I have a free upgrade in June and see what is on for offer and if there is nothing new or I have to wait I will happily wait for the new offering.

Wow, I'm not alone. I'm hoping Apple WOWs us this summer. 99% of the app store does not interest me. I still like the iPhone but it has become somewhat boring with all of the new phones out there. I'm stuck since my wife just got her free upgrade phone, not an iPhone, just a free cheap phone, and now we have another 2 year contract. Why a 2 year contract on a non-PDA style phone????? It does nothing and no data plan. I'm not going to pay a cancellation fee so I can only hope Apple pulls the rabbit out the hat. Its a wait and see game.

I'm very bored with the iPhone and the iPhone OS. The incremental yearly upgrades to the phone have been underwhelming. The case design of the 3gs still cracks exactly like the 3g. The OS feels and looks outdated.

I'm hoping for a major surprise with 4.0 and the new iPhone but we will see. Im tiring of Apples secrecy (ipad) and really am considering the new Sprint 4g. I love that phone!

The lack of updates to the Macbook Pro are also pushing me away from the company that I truly was a fan boy of haha!

I've been in the same boat as many of you. I also have switched to the Pre and the HTC Hero. While both are nice the honeymoon ended very fast. I'm always left missing something. Neither one has Sling and Sirius. The Twitter apps are lack luster. Facebook sucks on both. The speed and fluid use of the device is not there with the Pre or Android Phone. THEY JUST DON'T WORK AS WELL. PERIOD.

I'm a big gadget geek like most of you. I have had Touch Pros and Touch Pro2's, HTC Diamond, Blackberrys, Androids, Palm Pre's, and more. None works as smoothly and as well for me. I'm a guy that pushes his devices to the limit. Lots of emails, media use and calls. We as geeks are ALWAYS looking for something more, the perfect device. When you almost have it all it's hard to find more.

I'm sure I'll try the HTC EVO and come back and get the new iPhone but now I'm very happy with my jailbroken 3GS.

I'm 50/50 on this. I use so many of the stock iPhone apps it would be hard to use another phone for this and or something else. I'm kind of tired of the app store - I only have about 40 apps in my library and 3 on my phone. I just like the simplicity of it phone itself, although they do need to change the UI a bit with 4.0.

I had only Things.app on my iPhone until I updated it and it stopped working.

lol. I was just playing a game of Monopoly and it crashed 3 times, never did before at all - so I deleted it. Now I only have Plants vz. Zombies and Shazam.

+1 about being bored with my 3G iPhone. I am going to jump ship this summer to one of the Android devices. It's about time that I try another platform. Apple will have to do what I consider an "A+" upgrade to both hardware and software to keep on this Apple ship.

It locked back because it was jailbroken?

No, I mean that I updated Things.app and now Things.app won't launch anymore. It crashes as soon as I launch it. I think it's because the newest version of things is a 3.0-only app, but I still have 2.2.1. The iPhone is supposed to not even update apps that are 3.0-only when you're running an older OS, but I think the developers made the new version of Things 2.2.1 compatible, but didn't really MAKE it 2.2.1 compatible.

I too was in your position so I took the plunge and got the Nexus One and haven't looked back since. I recommend you give it a try. They're pretty much the same cost, I think the Nexus may come out a little more expensive after import tax but if you want change then you aren't going to get better than the Nexus - it's got tons of potential!

My friend just got Motorola Droid/Verizon. He has more fun with it, then I would ever have with my iPhone. I was very skeptical of him, he seems to be too excited over a smart phone. But after getting more familiar with his help, it exceeded my expectations.

BTW, Google DROIDs offer a very different experience compared to iPhone. It also feels better integrated with just about any activities on the internet and beyond. Email application alone would put shame on any iPhone, any Mac or any Windows ones. Verizon is also beats ATT 3G like 2:1 (2.2Mb vs. 1.2Mb). Screen and camera are outstanding. Video looked stunning and sound was quite loud and clear. Youtube quality was way better vs. iPhone one over 3G. GPS works without any external sensors. 3D car racing game was smooth. Droid phones has some stuff that will make iPhone owners drooling, but hey, Steve knows better what is good for you.

It does feel iPhone is extremely overrated and over hyped.

My take on it:
If you want to have the best internet experience - Google phones are your best friends.
If you like buying the content from Apple and like to spend money in general - iPhone is your best friend.

I've changed my original position and I'm seriously deciding on purchasing an Nexus One.
As for you're concern about music. There's an android app called doubletwist that will take your itunes (non-drm) music and allow you to easily move them to your android phone. Additionally any music purchased from amazon should easily be added to itunes as it will be drm free AFAIK.

I think the N1 offers some cutting edge design and features that the iPhone doesn't have and to be blunt may never. For instance, being an open system based on linux, I can actually load debian onto the the N1  - talk about a geek's wet dream.

I'm a self professed gadget guy and the N1 is ringing my bell. With that said, I do use my phone for serious work and my main concern is android's ability to interface with my companies exchange/active sync interface. out of the box it will not but there's an email client that will.

Given that I have 14 days to play with it and return it if I feel so moved, I may bite the bullet. I just need to hold off selling my iPhone until I'm sure that the N1 is what I want.

As for apple improving the iPhone, I'm not sure what else can be thrown in there other then HD. Perhaps I'll search some various threads about what the new version of the iPhone could be.

I've tried all other platforms except WinMo and i still have the softest spot for iPhone despite it's age. It works and is smooth. Android sucks multimedia wise and is too fragmented, buying into a platform where i'm not guaranteed the latest update for months is not gonna happen. webOS suffers from poor hardware and a miniscule amount of apps and J2M is just mind numbingly boring and very utilitarian...also miniscule amount of apps.

Sure iPhone isn't perfect but it does what it does well, has great platform support and customer service support is yet to be beaten IMHO and i can't wait for iPhone 4.0 software/hardware

I ...

... entered late to the game with a used and broken iPhone 3G. I repaired it (sensor failure and broken dock connector). It turned out to be a O2 UK locked device. I could use it in my country, but no data because of (/§$§§$&$$% dataroaming fees. I thought the unlocking was a breeze - it wasn´t, as I had no luck and must use the device in O2 UK network first. Unfortunately no scheduled UK visit, so ... I jumped right into: jailbreaked it, downgraded the baseband and unlocked it that way. I have a cheap phone plan (tied to my DSL provider, no monthly cost, just billing of usage, except for a US$8 mobile data flat). Mind you I was coming from a Sony Ericson T610 (yes, still running strong, but reliable fullfilling our mobile needs).

Ever since my networked life has changed drammatically. I use it heavily for Websurfing, eMail, Facebook, eBay, Videos (mostly via EyeTV mobile and Air Video, to access our media library), read eBooks/PDFs of any sort, music listening, VNC into our desktops, paint on it, take snapshots and video footage from our offspring, connect to local map services and train schedules attached to the GPS, first stage medical problem solving, almost anything information related pumps through this device.

We thought of getting a netbook - cancelled for the time being and inconvenience it might cause. Even the iPad, albeit its similarities to the iPhone universe, will be postponed for now mainly due to its size and some lacking killer features (like a front facing webcam).

Nevertheless, Apples hardware and interface design is brilliant in many ways, flawed in some; But because of the huge jailbreak community this is kind of sorted out and equalized for the better. Basically it turned my old 3G into a full featured 3GS (ok, lacking the speed, of course), having almost any (software) tool you could imagine available at your finger tips. Apple doesn´t like it officially, but their designs lead it that way, a natural path of some sort: They pack, we hack, and vice versa.

We first had an iPod Touch, but it soooooo dwarfed compared to what the iPhone can handle. There is no going back. I am quite optimistic about the upcoming iPhone HD, although I won´t be able to afford it on launch (well, if it has a front facing webcam, I am all sold).

Android is developing punch, but yet is lacking the mind of its community compared to the iphone branch (legal and half legal one, of ocurse). Devices just start their spring life when they are hacked and - most important - used extensively. I spot the Android hardware there in a coiuple of years, if they get their acts together. Don´t forget: There are several Android based devices out there left in th cold by phone providers. It´s still nothing compared to the force the iPhone universe has developed.

Sorry for this hail´n´halleluja, but I infact did see the light! Blinded in awe I walk, I saw ;-)

PS

Occasionally, I phone it, too.

Ive been a big fan of the Iphone from the first day, owning an Iphone first generation and a white 3G. To my surprise ive been a bit bored with it the past few months, especially after seeing the latest Android phones. Bought a Desire yesterday and am expecting it next Wednesday. I'll always have a soft spot for the Iphone, but for me it is now time to explore the competition... :D

I still hope Apple will blow the competition away (yet again) on June 22nth with it's new generation. But with these Android phones being pumped by HTC out so frequently, it seems they are doomed to play catch up

If your bored of the iPhone, do what everyone else is doing. Buy an iPad.

I have an iPad. It's called a MacBook Pro. Waaaaaaay more capable than an iPad.

Call me when iPad can run pro audio software.

Yeah, and 3x the weight, 3x the price. The ipad is a media consumption device, and I think it will be astoundingly good at that. Clearly it's not meant to replace a laptop for professional content creation.

How about an A+ upgrade (or Downgrade) to plan pricing from AT&T! Too many people are stuck on hardware and not what they are paying for it and service to use it!

You haven't tired of proselytizing your decision to not upgrade to OS3.0 yet? I mean, I haven't been on this forum for about six months and you're still on this?
