Which lower price models? iPhone 7 and 8?

The lower price models are all old designs from 2017 and before. The 2018 iPhone models are all newer thin-bezel with Face ID. From a consumer's view, 3D Touch is nice to have, but the 6.1" model wins hearts and minds due to the form factor, Face ID, and A12. Software simulated 3D Touch is probably good enough for most users.

Think of the iPad (2018). Unlike the iPad mini 4 or iPad Pro, it doesn't have a laminated display. But the 9.7" display combined with A10 and Pencil support wins over consumers.

Yeap, you could have the 7 Plus and 8 Plus with 3D Touch cheaper than the new cheap 6” device with X bezelless design. Which will be odd.

OP, Tim Cook said on the recent earnings call that "advanced features" will be moving to "lower price points." This basically confirms the 6.1" LCD Phone, which will probably start at $699 to $799. That phone (or some similar phone) will be $599 or so in 2019, and that's your answer.

You're probably in a similar boat to me: You want a high caliber experience with timely software updates, top notch hardware (no pun intended nor a reference to the X), little to no trade offs or compromises, and something within reason.

I am looking to buy a year old device too because it doesn't make a huge difference between the processors or performance. The Pixel and Pixel XL still perform well with a 821 processor. The 835 processor w/ the Pixel 2 and 2XL will outperform the Galaxy S9 or S9+ once Android P comes out fully on both devices. If you're going iPhone, go for the 8+. You'll appreciate the better camera, the larger screen, the beefier battery.
Pretty much. I can’t do plus sized iPhones though, I find them too big in my pockets and to grip. I can only do the standard and can deal with the slightly inferior specs if I’m getting a smaller device.

It will still be bigger then the current X though, just not as big as the current Plus hopefully or the new X design Plus.

Not To mention, the 6.1 LCD iPhone has been rumored has been heavily rumored for quite some time and is had some of the most detailed information about what to expect with it in the fall. Its literally a guaranteed iiPhone At this point given Apple wants a model offered under the 5.8 iPhone. Its all pricing strategy at this point.
