The rumors that I have been hearing peg the data plan at being $30-40 a month. That means your total cell phone bill will be approaching $85-90 a month, every month for 2 years. Seeing as I'm still in school, it'd be a terrible idea to buy one for personal use (although I will buy one to review on my blog and then probably sell it or give it to a friend who wants it). I can't justify spending $2,760 ($90 * 24, +$600 for the initial cost) over 2 years just to have a cool phone, especially when the phone doesn't even have 3G. I'm sticking with my Moto Q on my SERO plan which gives me 500 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data for $30/mo.

^^

Make a choice about a phone on a rumors is a bad idea. iPhone is nice, meets my needs, and assuming the plans are semiaffordable, I'll be buying one

Wait a while and get it from ebay without contract and pop in a att pay as you go sim. Problem solved...

That type of restriction would be a neat trick. I don't buy it. I think the service plans will be bundled and the only options you'll have a voice minutes. At best, I hope we find out tomorrow, 14 day mark.

That's the thing, everything we've heard so far point to it *not* being affordable. Even if the data plan is only $25 (which is very, very conservative) it's still going to cost almost $70 a month total. Why would I pay that much for EDGE, when I'm getting unlimited 3G from Sprint for less than half of that?

Isn't a "smartphone" without a data plan just a "phone"?

Why would you want to buy a Blackberry without data use. Its not like the thing has a wonderful form factor.

Not if it has WiFi.

I've got a data plan for my Windows Mobile phone and I'd drop it in a minute if I was almost always in an area with WiFi. Others happen to be lucky enough to always be near a hotspot.

It can't be any more expensive than what I pay now with AT&T for my BB Pearl. My bill is over $100 with 900 mins and unlmtd BB.

Sure it can. BB internet service is the cheapest offered by cingular. Data service for 3G smartphones is $45 a month, and then the 900 minute plan, plus fees and taxes...easily $20 more than you're paying.

I have unlimited 3G internet on my BlackJack for 20 dollars. Not 45.

Because AT&T won't get the ridiculous $40 they are supposedly charging.

And this is the primary reason I won't be getting an iphone. AT&T being exclusive that is. Actually, it's the reason I have not left Sprint in 5+ years. $10 bucks a month unlimited data. You just cannot beat that....and EVDO to boot! God how I wish they made a Sprint compatible version of this, I would have ordered one as soon as it was announced!

oh.. great...

oh.. great...
I was all set to get my iPhone with a light data plan and i would mostly use wi-fi...
Now im really mad at AT&T...
Unless the Total cost fore the plan with be less then or = to $50 i probably won't be able to get it.

ALL smart phones do not require HUGE charges

I have Sprint PCS, therefore I cannot get the iPhone

However it would be hard for me to give away my $5/month unlimited data service that I use on my Treo

A similar service at at&t would run about 44.99/month

10x the price, for what?

Hopefully with the adoption of the iPhone at&t will get their act together with data pricing.

Yes, I have Sprint as well with a $10 unlimited data plan. To even think of paying $40 just for data is ridiculous.

Yeah, AT&T/Apple better get a decent data plan in order. There is no way I'm paying $40 for data on top of voice/messaging. That would be a big deal breaker for me. I'm hoping for maybe $25 unlimted data/messaging and then a separate voice package. Still, the cheaper the better. :D

Especially after having to pay full price for this "phone".
