Other iPhone Fold - what are you dealbreakers?

You are talking to a 13 Mini user

It will absolutely not be easier to use one handed at this width, relative to my Mini.

I wonder if it will run a hybrid of iPadOS and iOS. If it's just a blown up version of iOS on the bigger screen then what's the point? iPadOS while limited, is still more powerful than iOS. Another thing is the inner screen material, If it's the same as android phones it's a hard pass.
 
The crease in the screen would be the dealbreaker for me. I know my personality, and it would annoy the hell out of me. Even tiny micro-scratches that you can only see at the perfect angle bug me, so having a visible crease running down the entire center of the phone would drive me crazy.

In what world is it twice the price?
256 gigabyte iPhone 17 Pro Max: $1199
256 gigabyte cellular iPad mini 6: $849
Plus separate AppleCare plans for both, with Apple One, that’s $19.99.
Plus separate cellular data plans for both: let’s just say that’s about $150 to $200 a month, maybe $100 if you are lucky or using One of the carriers that isn’t the big three.

Put that all together and just for the first month of ownership of both of those devices, with their cellular data plans and insurance, you are looking at $2217, and that’s before tax, or any activation fee.

And that’s the current iPad mini, not the new fancy OLED iPad mini, which is very likely going to be another $100-$200 on top of that.
Meanwhile, the galaxy Z Fold 8 with 256 gigabytes of storage, and obviously built-in cellular data is $1899. And then one insurance plan and one data plan.
And keep in mind that inside screen is a nice crisp OLED display with a full 120 Hz refresh rate, two things that the iPad mini currently does not have.

Now you could argue that you could make compromises, like getting a 128 gigabyte Wi-Fi only iPad mini instead, but then we aren’t talking equivalent devices, and now you are having to make other compromises, such as using your phone as a hotspot at all times.

What you give up in durability (which is still to be seen) you make up in convenience, having the exact same specifications on both displays, not having to have separate data plans or constant hotspot usage, pocketability, not having to deal with the iPad mini’s camera that’s stuck in 2015, not having to worry about the whereabouts of both devices, and so on and so on.

I only have two.
Price: if we’re talking $2200 and under, which is personally what I believe it will be, trading in both an iPad and an iPhone will make it the price of any other regular phone.
IP68: just because Samsung hasn’t done this doesn’t mean other foldables haven’t, because they have. I obviously understand that it’s still less durable than a standard phone, and obviously, if you dunk it in sand, then immediately start flipping it open and closed without cleaning off any of the debris, it’s going to be a disaster. But I think the durability concerns for the most part are completely overblown. I think it’s going to be just like anything, for regular tumbles and pocket lint. It will be fine. If you drive it over with your car, bend it as far back as it will go, and dunk it in mud every weekend for “the lols” maybe less so.
The people exaggerating, saying that if you take a foldable to the beach even for a split second it’ll completely break and you’ll never use it again are so silly. We literally used to have iPhones with giant gaping holes in the bottom called the 30 pin connector, and that had no water or dust resistance at all. This phone is going to be significantly better than those were, and people used them happily for like a decade. Took them to the beach and everything.

All of the rumours point to it having basically the exact same camera module that the base iPhone 17 does right now. The base iPhone 17 was the best selling smart phone of the last year, and even with the lack of a lens, it’s still the best video camera in a phone. It’s a compromise over the Pro Max obviously, but I think once people actually use it, the verdict is going to be… Yeah, it’s the regular iPhone camera system that the majority of people are happy with. It’s fine.
There might be a small audience of pro users who actually use their camera professionally, where this phone just simply will not work. But I think that audience is being significantly overestimated, most customers purchasing any iPhone truly do not know anything about the camera. They get whatever phone their carrier offers them, they take it out of their pocket, they point, they shoot.
These are the same customers who will never see the $2000 price, because they’ll get it on some trade-in carrier offer where it’s $1200 off and on a 36- month contract.

well, the telephoto camera is the most used one for me, hence it's a dealbreaker for me.
And it's also why I have had 11PM, 13PM and now 17PM.
I do realize that not everyone uses the telephoto lens so whatever one's needs are
 
What are the chances that FaceId could exist on just the outer screen? And TouchId is utilized when open?
I know we have no leaked data about that but could it work
 
Considering I buy iPhone Pros because of the “optical zoom” camera, that’s the main issue for me.

Oh, and I love my orange colored 17 Pro so I’m hanging on to this for years unless there is a fabulous trade in offer.

I’m also more partial to FaceID, although TouchID in my Air works well. I don’t use that outdoors or on the go though.
