Both Microsoft and LG tried that, I believe. That form factor is fine for text and multitasking, but a big reason people want foldables is for images and video, which is not good with a big gap in the middle.

Another option is a rolling phone like what LG also tried to release at one point. But that has its compromises too which is probably why it never made it to market.

People keep acting like the iPhone Fold is somehow going to eliminate the crease entirely.

It won’t.

There will be a crease. Maybe it’ll be smaller than what we’ve seen on other foldables. Maybe it’ll be harder to notice in normal use. But there is no magic display technology that completely bypasses the physics of repeatedly bending a screen.

That’s why I still struggle with the idea of $2,500 device that has a visible and/or tangible crease running through the middle of the display. At that price, I expect a screen that feels uncompromisingly premium, not one with a built-in reminder that it’s folding.

The best part will come after launch. As soon as the first units arrive, MacRumors will be flooded with threads of people taking photos from every possible angle, under every lighting condition imaginable, trying to prove that the crease either exists or doesn’t.

Agreed, I had a Samsung Fold 5 and while it was very impressive at the beginning the crease is like a speed bump 3 years later, I mean I like swipe typing and it gets annoying the crease, while that was bad the main reason I went back to a slab iPhone 17 Pro Max is the battery performance and that was 4400 mah battery tanked after 1.5 years, while a lot of the Fold 8 Brigade are going wax lyrical about battery life it will tank within 2 years and that for me is what spoilt the experience , carrying a rather large Anker Power Bank to re-charge twice during the day is like “this is ridiculous”, especially when my daughters 2022 iPhone 14 Pro Max, a 1 year older phone still had far superior battery performance. So disappointed with fold experience I made a YT video on it if you care to learn more.

However might be buying the iPhone fold because, well it’s Apples first Foldable!!! Hahaha, If it last 5 years I would be impressed.

Samsung and other foldable manufacturers have been getting much better at minimizing the visibility of the crease, and more importantly, it is definitely less noticeable both to sight and touch with the latest foldables. the Fold 8 made me a believer, and I expect the new form factor to be a major disruptor in this year's sales. We may one day get to the point where we solve the bendable glass physics problem, but until then, these foldables get better every year.

I never really "got" foldables.....until I played with one very briefly.
Just a min or two with a Samsung foldable made me instantly strongly consider the iPhone fold.
The crease was surprisingly not very bad at all.....

I'm thinking I could replace my iPad mini with the iPhone fold, AND Carry around a Bluetooth keyboard to do actual productivity (emails, journaling, docs, etc) on it too.....

I'm very curious to see what Apple releases..... I'm not 100% sold on it, but I'm much more open now after actually playing with that Samsung fold.... 😎

Crease will only be there if you look for it but it will be minimally
