Amen. Apple releasing a $2000 foldable in a market of other $2000 foldables would be excellent compared to releasing a $3500 VR headset when the market has already decided that they only succeed and sell when sub-$500.
Your mistake, like so many other folks, is in your incorrect assumption of: "VR headset when the market has already decided that they only succeed and sell when sub-$500."

Realize first that the AVP is not simply a "VR headset." Take some time, do more than one brief test session, and look at the AVCP as a new-tech test bed, which is what it is. The fact that more than 100k units sold at $3500 is pretty amazing really; most of those buyers certainly did not drop $3500 because they were looking for a "VR headset."

As Apple proceeds with the AVP a big marketing challenge will be to educate the public that has been preconditioned to think that goggles one puts on one's head are always simply the [IMO often crap] "VR headsets" that have been sold for years by Oculus, Meta, MS, etc. The reality [intentional pun] of AVP is quite different, but understanding does take some thought.

It is a true reflection of Tim Cook's Apple. Just like Vision Pro. The previous Apple never would have released either product. Tim Cook's only goal in life is to see what he can convince people to pay for something.
AVP is a superb demonstration of a new tech direction; exactly the kind of thing that the world's most successful tech company should be investing R&D in. Kudos to Cook and his teams.

Therein lies the problem for Apple. How many times do you expect a consumer to keep trying AVP to be convinced they need it? I was in the Apple Store and asked to demo AVP and was told to make a reservation and come back. Apple lost any chance at a sale there when I'm present in person. I justified spending $3500 on an M3 Max MacBook Pro at launch, but definitely don't see the same value in AVP. Regardless, I wanted to give AVP a chance to see if a demo could sway me but Apple didn't make that easy. A lot of people question the value of a foldable but AVP is an even farther reach.

Incorrect. We don’t know that “it’s junk” because it hasn’t launched yet. The real differentiator for Apple’s foldable will be the software and what you can do with it. If I can use the Apple Pencil with it for instance, and use it like an iPad, it will be very tempting. They might market it as an iPhone AND and iPad.

Apple released lots of products that have been niche, discontinued or didn’t have an apparent market.
Why criticise something that hasn’t been officially announced, let alone reviewed?🤷🏽

To be fair some people didn’t see benefit or use case for the iPad when it launched.
It has done pretty well since launch.

Another big step in the Androidification of Apple.

I really miss the Apple which refused to let people use a wallpaper on backgrounds because it's unnecessary and bad design. I really miss the Apple which refused to put more than one button on mice. That Apple would close up shop before making a foldable phone.

So would you have preferred Apple to keep the same form factor as the original iPhone to 8 Plus with home button and large bezels?

You hate with no regard for advancing the future. Will it be perfect? No, even if Apple could make it perfect model one they wouldn’t so they can get people to upgrade annually. I for one really hope they execute it well.

I believe Apple needs to take this path more than a Vision Pro. More than an Apple Car. They need to spend resources on advancing products and software for the future.

Don’t give me that crap. People were begging for an iPad for 3 years after they saw iPhone. It has been immensely popular since day one.

Absolutely no one asked for a Vision Pro, and no one is asking for a foldable phone. Especially not one that starts at $2,000.

iPhone is Apple Cash cow, they could experiment with foldable, thinner phone and much more. One stream Apple needs to experiment.

I was a huge Apple fan.
I think iPhone needed a foldable, i would even argue iPhone should have a dex mode. Apple always made fun personal devices

Apple vision could’ve been an amazing device if it weren’t for the App Store. If it was opened up as a real compute platform like a Mac or a meta quest it would have changed the VR industry. Instead it shipped without even having webXR enabled.
It would be better if it’s less powerful, but much lighter like a pair of meta glasses

I’m not personally interested in a foldable iPhone, but if other people like it then good on Apple for making it. I’m all for choice.

I’ve demo’d the AVP a few times. I’m warming up to it. If the rumored V2 comes out soon I’ll probably get it. I don’t care much about 3D dinosaurs. The recent demo with the persistent widgets really got my attention. I can see using that in my workshop with different tools posted around the room.

The immersive videos also seem good for relaxing. I just saw a study showing that an immersive videos was almost as beneficial as a trip to the forest, but without the need for getting in the car and going there.
