Umm... ever heard of an airplane charger? And the add on rechargable/disposable batteries that they sell? The taxi doesnt have a cigarette lighter? Come on man... I really don't see your point except that you're obviously not prepared. I plan on having a dock or charger where ever I will be, I've learned from having 6600s and 6700s that die after 1hr of EVDO or WIFI or PocketNES or wmv streaming ontoptv.com.

Yes, I have heard of these. And about using the AirPlay Charger, have you ever looked at http://www.seatguru.com/? Some travelers are not Gold or Platinum, or better members to be able to score some of these "powered" seats.

And yes I have heard of and sold "extra battery power" for users..... I would prefer as not to having to carry extra chargers and stuff. It is much easier to stow an extra battery. For many of us that is all we need.

You seem to miss the point that there are travelers that don't want to spend extra money to make our digital lives easy. Is not that what Apple is all about in the end?

You might want to scale down your expectations regarding OS X on iPhone (Incidentally, Apple have never said that it runs "Mac" OS X, just "OS X".) There is no TextEdit on iPhone. In fact, there is no clipboard (in Safari, anyway).
Well... I'd have to disagree. The recent development notes clearly indicated that the iPhone supports a contextual menu (pressing and holding your finger down). When viewing e-mail, I think its entirely plausible that you can select words and phrases and copy/paste them into other documents. Copy/Pasting them from "viewer" documents (like PDF's or Word/Excel) might be another matter, but I don't think its at all inconceivable. Apple/Steve HAS said that this is the FULL OS X (All Things D) and that the ONLY differences, are that extraneous content has been removed (backgrounds, language files, etc) and that a whole new UI operates on top of it. The question isn't "what could it do" but "what has Apple allowed it to do". I think there are forces of "simplification" and "partner concerns" (read: AT&T) at work with Apple's decisions. The first, a friend and I always call "Steve and his one-mouse button", whenever it's clear Apple is resisting complications. The second, I'm much more concerned about. I'm actually surprised AT&T let Apple throw YouTube on there considering its against their policy to stream video over EDGE. Helio is currently dealing with these network restrictions by forcing YouTube visitors to a "for pay" page.

Some interesting terrain.

wow. you're really still buying into this "full mac osx" thing huh? thats a new one.

Man, you are missing the point.
If you travel that much, it's trade off. Apple can't provide solutions for every kind of mobile user out there. I think the iPhone battery specs are pretty good. If you need more than what they offer, then open your wallet buy chargers, batteries, accessories, whatever and be happy.
It's not a huge amount of money after all.

Yeah he is kinda boring, almost fell asleep. They shoulda used the PC guy from PC/Mac ads to present the features. Would've been much better IMHO

That was exactly my thought when I watched the movie. PC guy could have started with a joke that he got an iPhone or something and that he has switched at least with an iPhone that has er OSX. Then present all the features. People would have easily related to the PC guy on an Apple website, thus bringing more potential Mac buyers to the apple website. :)

How can you argue .... about anything

If anyone can say this is going to be garbage, is either a complete idiot or simply a PC apologist.

I have been waiting for Apple to do a phone for over 5 years, ever since I had a Treo, and it kind of synced my information.

I wanted it to just do what my computer had on it.

This is going to be a great product, I think the 20 plus minutes proved that.

FUD on that video.

:D

I use the phone constantly, and I've never run into a situation where I've talked for 8 SOLID HOURS and not been able to find a charger. 8 hours of talk time is pretty damned good. 250 hours of standby!? That beats my Motorola, and it had the best battery life of any phone I've ever used. Here are the specs since some of you have apparently never actually read the damn things.

Battery
Talk Time_______Up to 8 hours
Standby ________Up to 250 hours
Internet Use_____Up to 6 hours
Video Playback __Up to 7 hours
Audio playback __Up to 24 hours

I agree their specs are good...

But how many cell phones out there DO NOT allow for swapping the battery out? Apple is and AT&T are missing added sales (= profits) for not having a replaceable battery). Even if 25% of the iPhone users "bought" in to the idea of buying an extra battery, even at a cost $20 to them (more like $10) and a $40 cost to us - given Steve's 10 million iPhone estimate by the end of 2008 - this would mean 200 million $ in extra profit (perhaps 1/2 that if they had to share it with other resellers) - if every user of the iPhone bought one.

Even if 10% bought an extra battery it would still be $2 million. Maybe Apple is looking at the profits over two years to replace iPhone batteries. According to this link from Apple: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/battery/ the iPod battery costs about $60 to replace.

What most people don't understand is that many batteries only have between 200 to 400 recharge cycles. It does not matter whether the battery in most cases is fully discharged or partially discharged. Every-time you plug it in for a charge up, it counts as a full charge in most cases.

Given this, it is little reason why we complain about needing to replace rechargeable batteries so often in our cell phones and such. What will happen a year from now when iPhone users get less than expected usage from their battery? Just how long will they do without?

Unless AT&T is wiling to swap out phones with battery issues during the two year contract - or offer some service plan that we have been told by rumors that will never happen - then the battery issue is a real problem for more users than you might think - at least for for those of that think forward. And thinking forward - is that not the Apple way?

I have hard time believing the batteries will be a issue when people buy an iPhone. I understand your concern, but I can guarantee you the iPhone will be a major success after I watched this tour. Even myself included that was somewhat reluctant in getting one, I feel now willing to drop my Verizon service in order to switch to AT&T that has a worse reception just to get the dam iPhone.:D

I suspect the "manual" option is to disable automatic checking completely, not to manually set a specific interval. That's the way it works in mail.app.

Why have the "manual" button to get into a disable screen to disable? Kind of defeats the purpose for simplicity. Apple would have put the "disable" button on that first screen. The demo show's us the "Auto-Check" screen and manual button does just that...to set your time for Auto-Check.

if it's like mail then the "manually" option is not to get into another screen but simply means that when it's set to "manually" you have to press "get mail" to get it to see of you have any mail.

I assume you are resounding to me.

Following the 80/20 rule, there should be no issue for most users in most situations. To be honest I fall in the 20 range. I just like hedging my bets on the worst case situation.

I mentioned my 13+ hour trip from Palm Springs to DC in this or anoher thread. Even as a pleasure traveler, the battery life of the iPhone would have been a stretch. Keep in mind the "phone" aspect of the iPhone.

Do I need to try and balance my needs for "entertainment" verses the need to "communicate" when I can not just simply change out my battery? Can anyone point me to a cell phone that does NOT have an interchangeable battery like the iPhone that approaches the interest of the iPhone?

so many people with entitlement issues....

Yes, its sad that the iphone isnt EXACTLY what you wanted it to be.
I guess those of you whining and whinging about all the special stuff that you need will just have to start your own company and make your own special phone.

For the rest of us, this is the BEST F***ING PHONE EVER and anyone who says different is just too special for this planet, and I suggest you move to Mars asap.

I watched the new movie and this phone is amazing.
I will buy one, I dont care what it costs - I paid $800 for the first Razr, for Jobs sake!

Its an ipod nano with big screen - thats $300 on its own.
This thing is cheap!

It answers calls and pauses my iPod - I have tried loads of CRAPPY phones and not ONE of them can do this, and they dont have an iPod inside.

I can surf the web at free wi-fi spots.

I can use Jajah.com and get cheap calls Internationally.

The list of apps and the huge upside over anything else out there goes on for ever.....

You guys who knock the iPhone are really too STUPID for words.

He was in the Auto-Check in the iPhone Settings not in the Mail.app preferences. The button says "Manual" as in manual settings. "Manual Settings" and "to check mail Manually" are two entirely different functions.

Maybe because you have been using crappy phones thats why you havent noticed that almost all phones these days pause your music when you get a call and resume when you hang up. SE been doing that for years.

And do you really live in Canada, is so aren't you looking a bit foolish clamoring for a mobile you can't even buy?

Just because he can't use it, doesn't mean he can't buy it. He could drive to America, buy an iPhone, cancel his contract, keep it, and look at it.

That's the beauty of this phone...

What if the secret features include the following:

Voice Recognition or Italk capabilities
Real Ichat and video conferencing
Anti-theft

So far the features look nice, but nothing that really makes a non-Apple fan wanna buy it.

I know TONS of people that aren't impressed, or think its too expensive.

Implementing a voice recognition a la Italk. Imagine never having to pick up the phone, say while your driving....but not only dial a number, but actually FULLY control it in every aspect. From creating and sending emails to dictating a document.

Imagine having a video conference, but a TRUE video conference, with Ichat like features!!!!!!!

And as rumored before, anti theft. The technology is already there.

That's the beauty of this phone. Great features like this are just an update away. If Apple thinks they will make users happy and sell more phones, they will make their way into the phones. Look at it this way; Apple's engineers have delivered a great product and now we can fine tune it and request more features that they might not have considered.

Let's call the iPhone what it is: a very small portable computer with a cell phone built in. In short, it rocks!

Sounds like something he might do also.

Meanwhile, where is the A2DP? Using a wireless bluetooth headset for streaming music is a standard these days on most other mobiles and is the future of headphones.

he was in mail settings which is similar to mail app preferences and he was in auto check which seems similar "check for new mail".

So I know this is a bit off subject but in preparation of the iphone i was updating my address book. All was well and I was very pleased with how organized my address book was. So then I thought... "hey I should sync with my RAZR to get my phonebook up to date"

Unfortunately this turned out to be a bad idea since my Altell RAZR only sorta works and I ended up losing nearly half my contacts. (the phone changed the setting on my address book and I lost everything both on my phone and my computer)

But then I just remembered (after watching the video again) that itunes has my contacts in it too (and therefore was synced with my ipod that I haven't uploaded since the mistake)...

So all that to say I didn't lose my contacts after all...thanks to my ipod.

Bring on the iphone. I'm ready to ditch Altell and my RAZR. :D

Same happened here dude! And I hate the way RAZR keeps the contacts with one person with many numbers getting individual entries. It make the phone book to long to scroll through. Enough for that sleek looks!
I hope I could get iPhone soon, but cant until end of year but I surely will! We all survive on hope! :)

my friend has a moto q. he says that what ever the iphone can do, the q can do and more. i have yet to come up w/ a good argument, but it would be really hard, b/c he is a HUGE M$ fanboy. (after all he did say, "the only reason mac os x 10.5 was #1 on software on amazon.com was b/c retarded PC owners think they can run it on their PC's")

he doesnt think the touch screen is a big deal and that IE mobile is the "full internet". ive personally looked at the q, and even though the iphone interface is 500000x better, it seems to have more features...... but then again i really dont believe the iphone to be a smart phone but rather as someone on these forums said "an entertainment communications device". i think that youtube app is awesome and i would def use that.

i personally cant really afford it (currently under a 2 year contract on verizon, the company "that always stops working for you"). also i want to wait a year and see how apple updates the features of the phone (if at all).

all in all that video was really awesome, and i really just want to go to the apple store and try it out!!
