Put cross platform users to sleep? Idk about that. The presentation alone was A+... I was intrigued with all the transition and how polished the production Apple put into it. Android didn't even provide us with some form of virtual conference this year, maybe I'm wrong... but I haven't read anything otherwise.
Google have given up it seems. First they outright cancelled I/O and then they were supposed to have a presentation for android 11 and they cancelled that. Maybe they will something for the pixel 5.

The post about iPhone getting updates so long was probably an attempt to rile people up...but hes not wrong. Apple supporting devices for so many years is something that Android should absolutely start doing. What sucks is that Google have tried their best to make it as eay as possible for OEMs to do that, but they just ignore Google. And Google need to up their support from 3 years to 5 years.

Yeah, I don't think they care. Android is flooded with so many phones. It's a highly competitive market and being honest.. it doesn't benefit Samsung or any other OEM to support Android for 3+ years. Apple only has to compete with itself for iOS. And they have the luxury to have this highly successful ecosystem built with a popular AppStore. As well as accessories for the iPhone with Apple Watch and AirPods to make up for users who don't upgrade.
I think there must be some kind of restriction from google or Qualcomm about how many OS updates they can offer. Surely one OEM would have tried offering more than 3 years if updates to see if consumers would bite. I’m surprised Samsung haven’t. Maybe they can’t.

Nah, its entirely an OEM thing. As long as all the other OEMs on the android side dont provide more than 2 years of updates, nobody feels the need to extend that. What in it for them? They want customers to buy new phones every 2 years so thats why they stop updating after 2 years. Google has tried to push OEMs to update quicker and for longer periods but its still up to the OEMs in the end. Google cant force it thats why theyve pulled as much into the Play Store as possible to take it out of OEMs hands. Apple dont have to deal with this because they have full control over hardware and software.

But you have admit. As far as new features go in IOS these were pretty much taken right from Android.
Don't get me wrong...They ALL copy from each other but these new features in IOS have already been in Android for quite some time.
I welcome the home screen widgets......just wish they would let me arrange my damn icons in any order i wish when moving the widgets.
Would love to have 5 rows of icons and I might be able to have nothing but widgets on my home screen :)

Yeah, iOS has taken features from Android. But I’ve said it a thread already... why does it matter if features are taken from each other? Would it better if Apple stayed stagnate? I don’t see the logic in that...

I don’t mind... the limit to 2 years worth of updates. I can understand... the complexity with trying keep phones updated with the amount of Android phones that are out on the market. My only issue is OEMs should be quicker with updates, it shouldn’t take months for users to receive the Android 11 update. Once Google pushes the update to Pixel... OEM should be testing and be ready for when the official update is released.

Maybe the OEM are testing the update now, but clearly they tend to drag their feet.

yeah....I don't think I said it matter now did I? Or even implied it ...just stated my opinion.
Then no one wants Apple to stay anymore stagnant they they already are. Its nice to see them breath more life into IOS!

I think they do look better on iOS from what I’ve seen so far. However the home screen is still far better on android. This is still the same grid of icons. You can’t put your apps anywhere you want. You can’t use different themes or launchers.

And still no split screen apps. However Apple have tried. Well done Apple.

I appreciate the consistent design/style of widgets on iOS (vs. the veritable hodge-podge on Android) but I likely won’t use them on my home screens and stick to the panel left of the first home screen and/or left of the notification panel. I just don’t find them useful in my Android home screens and that won’t change on iOS.

That said, I’m glad it’s an option now.

As soon as widgets are available to use on the home screen on the iPad, I’m definitely going to make use of them. They are technically on the HomeScreen now, but delegated only to right side and ONLY in landscape!

I'm excited Apple is FINALLY allowing something new on the home screen.

From what I've seen so far, the widgets look nice. Widgets are widgets, there's not much to expect from them.

But Android still has a slight edge in a certain regard. And that's the customization of widgets. Many Android widgets have transparency, color, font, size of text, and etc, settings. You can make the widgets look and feel as if they are part of the wallpaper or home screen itself. I like that borderless transparent look much more vs a widget in a container look.

Where Apple will win hands down, is the amount of apps that will implement widgets, and most will be quality widgets because of Apple's conformity.

The thing about Android is, I only use widgets that are packaged as just a widget, as most widgets that come from an app sucks.

I haven't messed with iOS14 beta yet, I'll most likely wait for the release. But from what I've seen so far, I'm not impressed with the app launcher or whatever it's called. It just doesn't seem to fit iOS. Just my initial hands off impression.

Well, imo it's not like Google "giving up," but Android is already a mature OS. It's not like there's much to talk about. Heck, I was bored with Google I/O's OS update since Android 9 onwards.

And I doubt Google has the production chops like Apple to create such cinematic presentation. :D

More like Qualcomm simply doesn't update their drivers of their older chipsets for newer Android.

Android phones is like Windows PCs. OEMs are using off-the-shelf parts from different manufacturers, so if there's an OS version update, all the drivers must be updated as well. I think there was an issue of Sony failing to deliver one OS update in the past because Qualcomm decided not to update their drivers.

This is also why google is working hard to modularize Android, and even separate it from the drivers.

But then again, I don't think the OEMs want to update their phones that long. Unlike Apple who keep making their previous phones for another 2 to 3 years to be the middle or lower range model, most Android OEMs simply refresh their whole lineup on a yearly basis. Take Samsung. Instead of keeping the S8 and S9 as their mid range, Samsung made S10 lite and Galaxy A models instead. Their business model just doesn't support keeping devices updated.

Now I don't mind about a phone not getting OS version upgrades. But I'm getting annoyed with the lack of security updates. These updates are easy for the OEMs, and don't require much to do. Google even made Android to be easier to update and sent these updates to the OEMs a month in advance. But we are still seeing untimely security updates, with many phones barely getting it. This part to me is inexcusable, regardless if you have a flagship or a budget phone.

Watching all these iOS 14 videos and one thing that keeps smacking me in the head is that ****ing disgusting notch these iPhone's still have. It just looks so outdated and ugly today in 2020.

The "notch" first came out in 2017, when back then a ton of Android phones had notches too, and they were just as ugly if not worse. Then Apple keeps the notch in 2018. Then they keep it yet again in 2019, and now for 2020 we may possibly get a slightly smaller notch, if not the same old nasty notch.

I had the Pixel 3 XL for one full year, and that phone had by far the ugliest worst-looking notch. People said the more you use the phone it just fades away from your brain. Yeah, no. That 3 XL notch was just so bad. The iPhone notch isn't as bad, but close.

For Apple to keep a notch 4 years in a row would be extremely disappointing. At least the Pixel 4 XL went with a forehead to not require a notch and my God it's so refreshing and nice to just see a flat screen at the top without the notch cut outs.

Plus the bezel thickness on the iPhone's X, XS, 11, etc... seem pretty thick and wide, and again dated compared to the competition.

Hopefully the iPhone 12 Pro rumors are true, smaller notch up top, and much thinner reduced bezel on sides and bottom.

The best part is, Apple still has time to improve the widgets. We have around 8 betas to get through, plus 14.1, 14.2, 14.3, 14.4 and so on to bring improvements. I'm just glad the groundwork is now in placed. Finally! Its only up from here...

Oddly enough, I think iOS 15 in June 2021 will be all about customization and bringing a updated look to iOS - sort of how iOS 7 completely changed the way iOS looked then.

I won’t disagree that the notch isn’t aesthetically pleasing and that much of the competition look much better but outside of the Pixel 4 models, none have to place the same amount of hardware up top. Take away FaceID and Apple could have the same little hole punch everyone else is using. Personally, I’d never give up FaceID for a hole punch, not under any circumstances.

And yes, the Pixel 4 models circumvented the need for a notch by going with the slim forehead bezel, something you and I prefer. That being said, we are likely in the significant minority in this regard. Nearly every single account I read online disparages the ‘huge’ top bezel on the Pixels. I still don’t understand the obsession with having the tiniest bezels possible when it usually means compromising performance or function. 🤷‍♂️

FWIW, I’ve been rocking iOS 14 for a day now and while it‘s obviously super early to judge, save for the screen locking up once when I was trying to test out one of the new wallpapers, I’ve had no noticeable hiccups or bugs.

Battery life tends to suffer often in these early betas yet mine hasn’t been any different today—we’ll see how it fairs over the next few days. Also, no lags or stutters that I’ve noticed. Enjoying exploring the new features. A very cool change I came across earlier (and one that MKBHD also highlighted in his video) is the ability to assign quick actions or shortcuts to either a double-tap or triple-tap on the back of the phone.

Will share my experience here as I go if anyone is interested.

The iPhone notch bothered me when it was first announced and I did not look forward to it as I awaited the X. The day I got the X was probably the last time I have thought about it though. It was only a problem until I got the phone. It’s not perfect but it’s a non-issue to me now and has been since the X came out.

For me personally the notch on the Pixel 3 XL was just horrendous I hated looking at it. yeah usually it would fade away in the background it wouldn't notice it but still almost every few days something light or bright on the screen would really show off the big notch and it's just ridiculous looking.

I thought I would hate a big forehead bezel on my Pixel 4 XL but now I actually love it because I got a straight flight screen at the top.

Very interested, thanks. Dang, this is the first time I’ve wanted to install an iOS beta and the first time I happen to have a spare iPhone to do it on too, but if I understand correctly you need a paid developer account for this? Any way around that?

Three ways to get access—1) Paid developer account, 2) Apple employee, or 3) public beta. Only first 2 are available now. So unless you are set to start your new job at Apple ;), only option for the time being is a paid developer account.

They are usually quite good with security updates on the whole. Obviously not every OEM, but google, Samsung and one plus do provide regular security updates. My husbands note 8 still gets them regularly.
As for I/O I enjoy it. Not usually for the system update, but they usually show off advancements to the assistant which is always good to see. I’ll never forget those Duplex calls. They were amazing. They also usually show off some new hardware like new google home devices or chrome casts.

I suppose we still have the note 20+ stream to look forward to and the Samsung developers conference.

I’m betting IFA is cancelled this year.

Getting the bezels razor thin on the sides causes issues with false touch. Probably one of the reasons the galaxy s20 has switched to a tad thicker bezel that’s more flat.

If you can run pip on a 6.5 inch screen then I don’t see the difference between running two apps. I have a galaxy S5 here which is only 5.1 inches and I can comfortably run 2 apps on the screen.

Apple likely think PIP will be used more than spilt screen on a small phone.

They likely will add it but clearly not a big thing right now. Maybe they add it for pro models only where screens are big enough

I will say iOS 13 and now 14, have made improvements to the OS that were much needed in my opinion. I do like where Apple is taking iOS these last two major updates.

The last iPhone I owned was running iOS 9 or 10. So iOS 14 in comparison seems like some great quality of life improvements.

Yeah.. i think Apple will likely add it to the larger screen models of the iPhone. Similar to how Apple adds landscape only to Plus models.
