The only thing I'm missing now is Pencil + Scribble support for at least the larger iPhone 12. Give me that, and - with something of a lump in the throat - I'll probably stop lusting for the Note series.

Yeah.. i think Apple will likely add it to the larger screen models of the iPhone. Similar to how Apple adds landscape only to Plus models.
Maybe it will be an exclusive for the 6.7 inch 12 pro max. This year. They’ve got most of the things I want now. Only missing split screen and pencil support. I know they would never have a Dex like feature. I saw on a video this morning that the iPhone and iOS will be getting 4K video support for YouTube. Finally!

4K on YouTube is very much welcomed. Maybe the YouTube app will support PIP come September

Obviously will need YouTube premium though

I honestly don’t know how Youtube can police it, that’s why I can understand why they haven’t implemented it. I pay for YT premium.. and I enjoy having it on Android. But if iOS users are able to use PiP, Youtube would lose the benefit to sign up for the service.

I’ve yet to find a app that can hide PiP behind a paywall. Umm.. GoodReader is a popular file management system I use on my iPad. And they tried to hide DarkMode under a paywall.. which was a very unpopular decision. Lots of users voiced their opinion (me included). And now, Goodreader has enabled it without a subscription.

It will likely be the same as it is on android where premium is needed to use PIP in the app

Maybe, but PiP has been around since 2015 when Apple introduced it under iOS 9 and Alphabet/Google hasn’t implemented it. My thinking is.. regardless of 4K coming to YT that wouldn’t help in PiP coming to iOS.

The benefits doesn’t say anything about resolution... people without YT Premium are able to watch 4K content, from my understanding.

Yeah..sadly I have to agree. Maybe the much higher number of iPhone users vs. iPad will be enough of an impetus for Google to flip that switch but I'm not holding my breath. So if I have any intention of watching YouTube PiP, I just open it up in Safari vs. the app, as PiP works with video playback via the web.

And that same workaround, while less than ideal on the iPhone, already works on iOS 14 beta 1. :D

No PIP has been around since 2012 when Samsung implemented. It debuted on the Samsung galaxy S3. Even after that some of the other android OEMs like LG quickly copied it. That was before Apple implemented it on the iPad. I could do pip on my original galaxy note phone once it got updated to ice cream sandwich.

I actually think at one point you were able to get PIP on some android devices without youtube premium. My husband could do it in the past on his note 8 before I upgraded my YouTube premium subscription to a family account and shared or with him.
Here is an older article on it

Yeah YouTube decided we can make money off this so added it for premium. I can see YouTube adding it to allow iPhone just like I can see many apps taking advantage of 120hz if apple had it on the pros this year...lets face it when apple add something developers/companies are more likely to add more support.

Would I pay for premium if it lets us use YouTube PIP in the app? Yeah I would as I would use it everyday. PIP was my favourite feature on my S10 plus and so glad apple added it.

In context... i was only acknowledging when it was introduced by Apple. I'm fully aware Android had it first and I'm sure plenty ideas derived from Android. My point was if YT haven't implemented PiP then, 4K wouldn't entice them.

The reason why YT can implement PiP on Android is because Alphabet/Google has a stronghold on the OS. And I'm sure there are workarounds, but idk... I don't mind paying 15 bucks monthly for a group of 6 to share YT premium features.

And, I'm glad I jumped on board with it early... since they increased the price. I gotta feeling YT will do it again, I'm just glad they kept the grandfathered price for those who signed up early. Some companies don't.. like Amazon and Netflix.

We never got YouTube red in the U.K. we first got YouTube premium in I think 2018. I’ve been subscribed ever since it became available in the U.K. So for me it doesn’t matter either way if you need YouTube premium or not. I just hope it works.

I can’t bear to watch videos with adverts in them so that alone is worth the subscription. I also like being able Download videos to watch if I’m ever offline. I get google play music as a bonus which I use with my google home speakers. Don’t know what I’m going to do when google shut it down though.

PIP for one is where ads are so annoying. Been using PIP on my iPad all morning and the fact is when an ad come on you have to go back to safari and click skip ad each time. Making me tempted to get it now for this alone.

Have you had a free trial before? You could try the trial. Did you install the beta on your iPad already?

I’ve already had the free trial sadly. I did use when I had my S10 plus ad got it free and used it for a bit after. Not downloaded the beta yet. Not sure if I should wait til release that way more apps will be supported for widgets e.t.c. Tempted to try it though. I downloaded it last year but may wait til the release date. Will you be downloading?

Oh are you using PIP through safari?

Haven’t downloaded the beta. I think I’ll wait until it comes out officially.

Wow...widgets, an 'app drawer', and PiP. An awful lot of familiar features here...;)

And to be clear, I'm not complaining in any way.

Here's hoping Apple rips off some more from Android...<cough>default apps<cough>
They always do so its coming. If they want to steal some Android customers maybe they should make the midrange phones NOT have the 2010 huge bezels on the top and bottom lol.

The SS A71,....hec even the A51 is a better phone than the Apple SE phone...and they are already cheaper, ...of course.
