I don’t know, have your tried a mid-range Android phone lately? For $350 (Samsung A53 5G) you can get 6.5” 120hz OLED screen, 128GB storage, and super long battery life. I know there are other reasons people buy an iPhone, myself included, but the competition is killing it if you don’t actually need an iPhone…do you actually need the best camera and processor out there? Or do you need iOS?

Just some thoughts. Phones have stagnated in evolution big time and the price of the tech has fallen significantly so that the competition can offer something really compelling for not much money in comparison.

We could put an end to all this nonsense by just not buying new gear.
It's amazing how quickly that would get the message across.
But in the same way that we could end all wars instantly if all military personnel beneath the rank of General refused to fight, we unfortunately cannot organise that level of coordinated militancy.

In Europe 2023 might just be the decisive year for this to happen.

I'm an avid Android user but A53 hardly compares to the SE.
A53 is actually a downgrade compared to the previous A52s.
The SE probably beats it in every single department except battery life.
Then again, the SE is more expensive.
Fairest comparison would probably be SE vs S20 FE and I'd pick the Samsung.
Personal taste though.

You’re telling me you’d prefer to use a 4.7” LCD 60hz screen with horrendous battery life vs the A53? I don’t think you’ve tried the A53 or you’re trolling.

I've had my share of mid-range Android phones, I actually alternate between them and flagships (using an S21 Ultra now).
Mid-ranges are fine if I'm buying them for a kid or non-tech-savvy adult, or the kind of person that doesn't care too much or treat their phone horribly so they have to buy another every year.
Otherwise I'd rather spend a little more (think S20 FE, S21 FE, 13 mini).
Also I have an old iPhone 7 here lying around.
I can't really stomach using iOS but the screen is still looking good.
Small, sure, but higher quality than most budget OLEDs.
Tried an A52s for a few hours, so I know what I'm talking about.

Specs don’t lie. Unless you need the power of the A15 or have to have iOS, the A53 is a superior phone in every way and I’ve had almost every iPhone. There’s no tech enthusiast still using a 4.7” LCD 60hz screen. And I own the A53, so I know what I’m talking about too.

You’re talking as if it’s a flimsy piece of plastic that’s going to break the second it’s dropped.

That is how preferences work... someone preferring something you wouldn't isn't trolling.

I’m not referring to preferences, I’m referring to black and white specs (what you get for the money). If you have to have iOS that’s totally different.

Prices aren’t bad at all considering inflation & relative strength of USD

Tho the 14 doesn’t offer much new over the 13. 14 pro is another story.

"Specs don't lie"... exynos 1280 vs Apple A14 doesn't either.
You're cherry picking based on your priorities.
The whole point of a midrange is cutting corners to offer a product at a lower price.
Some aspects are going to be given an higher priority than others.
The compromises Samsung made on the A53 work for your usage, good for you.

You can't blame Apple or Apple shareholders for what happened to the euro (and some other currencies) over the past nearly two years. The exchange rate alone would be responsible for an 18% price increase this year. Apple and Apple shareholders don't benefit from that and it can actually hurt the company as it could result in fewer sales due to the notably decreased value of the euro.
Don’t forget that the 18% also gets taxed at the VAT rate.

People should simply start holding onto their phones longer than usual. I am still holding onto my iPhone X and even though I placed a self imposed upgrade for next years iPhone 15 Pro Max, if iOS 17 supports the X, I just might hold out another year. The battery is starting to show its age in the X though, now around 84%, so I might replace that to pro long it.

But seriously, the days of you needed to upgrade every single year to realize significant benefits are over. Max out those iOS upgrades, replace the battery if you need to, put it in a case to protect it, diversify your devices. You don't need to use your iPhone for everything. To many wants versus needs this time of the year.

No matter how you look at this, everywhere the new prices getting ridiculous even if you can afford it.

In 2010, the entry 3.5" iPhone 4 (16GB) was $649 which is equal to around $885 in today's dollars. The larger 6.1" iPhone 14 with 8 times the storage (128GB) is $829... how is that ridiculous? No one has to spend "ridiculous" prices for a desirable, current model iPhone.

Not everyone lives in the US… in EU the 14 start at 1000€ Up to 2100€ for fully loaded 14 Pro Max, so yes thats ridiculous prices for a phone.

I bought a MacBook Air in 2017. Nothing special, but I still use it and it works just fine. I paid $200 more for it than I just paid for my iPhone. I actually could buy a laptop for less than my iPhone. I could probably buy a PlayStation and a chrome book for the price of an iPhone. I might be able to feed a family for a month for the price of an iPhone pro. It’s all relative.

I understand but you said "everywhere..." Doesn't "everywhere" include the U.S.?
Indeed, the prices are ridiculous everywhere, included the US.
But if you think it's fair/reasonable price for a phone, go ahead, get one and enjoy it :)

In the same time many will skip this release coz its not big improvement over the older model and coz of the price increase..

The A53 is not an update for the A52s, it's an update for the A52. The A5xs models is a separate lineup and will have its own sequel.

In my country, the 2022 SE is not even in the same price range.
A53 128GB: ~$390
iPhone SE 2022 64GB: ~$500
For $500 price point, I'll be looking at the S21 FE, and for ~$530, I can get the 256GB version.

The only thing the SE is winning is iOS, raw chip performance, and build material (the Samsungs have plastic back).

The 2022 SE is just laughable, and only there to taunt people not being able to afford the iPhone. The fact that they priced it higher than the iPhone 11 over here makes it even funnier.

if you think about it, trade in prices are about half from the original purchase as far as I can see.

So while you have to buy your initial iPhone full price, every year you update - you only pay for half an iPhone.

Potentially less if you sell the old device on marketplace or somewhere else.

Something to consider.
Nice try, Tim Apple.

I was around when I could get 2 pounds for every 1 dollar, too bad the iPhone was not vastly cheaper then, strange that.
It’s interesting that Apple decided they wanted to do a $1=£1 dollar conversion for some years. Which meant to them whatever the price in dollars would be exactly the same in pounds just removed the $ and replace it with a pound sign. However even now the pound is still stronger than the dollar but the old $1=£1 is no longer good enough for Apple. They had to increase the prices even more.
