Samsung doesn't release sales numbers, only shipped, so we won't really know.
Apple also includes shipped numbers when they report sales.
As long as devices are selling through, shipments pretty much equal sales.
Considering that Samsung shipments have been constant for months, it's pretty certain that stores are not continuing to stock up on something that's not selling.
I think Apple only counted those iPhones sold and not the couple of millions that are going to be delivered in the next 2-4 days for those who missed the 345am Friday Sept 14th pre order deadline.
Correct, Apple does not count shipments to their own stores, or units still on the way directly to end customers.
Their sales numbers do, however, include shipments to carrier and other retail stores. While many of those have reported selling out, some posters have noted being able to walk into stores with plenty of stock.
Clearly Samsung sells a lot more phones then Apple but they also make a lot more phones.
Exactly. Apple only makes one new model per year. Samsung makes many different smartphone models, some of which should be quite niche. E.g. the 5" Note, which nevertheless has surprisingly averaged over one million a month.
