Actually the first thing I thought when I saw the final pictures of the top of the iphone was 'That looks alot like the battery tray on the apple remote. I wonder if that is the sim card slot and if it opens the same way?'

I guess I was right.

Everything looks amazing except for the calculator.

that calculator application's GUI looks absolutely terrible, ugly, clumsy, not very iphone looking...

Yeah, really weird. It makes me think that the first half of these pictures were taken a long time ago, and that design was just a temp design. It just doesn't make any sense. Apple is usually very strict on sticking to a specific design DNA except when they are experimenting with new designs like in mac os x.

I truly don't think that is how the calculator will ship. It just couldn't have been approved by everyone.

Why do the screen shots show cingular as the network?

Also, that press release from Visto says that they'll have Exchange support in Q3. If the screenshots from TS are real, the iPhone may have it already without Visto. The Visto stuff read like it was another subscription, which sucks. I tried GoodLink for a bit, but it sucked.

Ooh, Excel viewer...

... but to have that, the must have an Excel parser and a spreadsheet viewer component, and why would they have written that unless they had a spreadsheet in development for, e.g., iWork?

On the other hand, it looks rather primitive, but that could be the example chosen.

Wonder if there is a Word (& Pages) and Powerpoint (& Keynote) viewer as well, activated when you select that type of document in an email.

All this Exchange email stuff is great, but the main reason we use Exchange is for the calendar integration. I run a PPC smartphone for that reason.

I was certain I was going to give the iPhone a miss for a while - but if they can sync the exchange calendar with the iPhone calendar - I'm sold... Or even better, It they can integrate completey with Gmail and Google calender I can dump our exchnage server!.. Anyone heard anything on tighter Gmail and Google Calender integration?

I know there's no current UK carrier at the moment, but I can't see it taking that long after the potential huge initial success in the US

Exchange option...

Oh please oh please.

I KNOW! Seems like Exchange is the big news here.

The Exchange option gives me some hope that we're going to see much better Exchange integration in Leopard. I really wish Apple would repackage Mail, iCal and Address Book as a more Outlook-like single app that works seamlessly with Exchange.

Hopefully you're right, I can't wait much longer :D

But I guess it depends on how long it takes the carrier to set up Visual Voicemail etc. I could live without that though!

I agree, I like apple mail but Outlook is a great tool - If you're in the corporate world there's no escaping it... But as a small company we would be happy to move over to Google for mail and calender if we can get exchange type integration.

I know Apple was having a hard time finding a UK carrier a while back, but that was when iPhone details were quite sketchy. I can't see how the iPhone will be anything other than another iPod like success story, and I think UK carriers will soon be faling over each other to cut a deal asap.

Nice pretty UI!

I'd be surprised if there wasn't a calendar, its too useful.

Nice confirmation of SIM removal, but I think that was a given.

Here's the more interesting part...

Exchange support is TO BE provided by Visto (a 3rd party developer) and in their press release it states:

Availability - Visto Mobile for the iPhone will be available in late Q3 2007. iPhone users will be able to take advantage of a free 60-day trial of the Visto Mobile service. For more details and pre-sign up, go to http://www.vistomobile.com/iphone

So the feature will be available at some cost (not so good) but it's CLEAR evidence that 3rd party NON-Apple developed software will be on it's way (with the approval of Apple no doubt) and I'm not just talking Web 2.0 apps.

I don't think that's proof of anything. Last time someone did this for a phone, they had a web service that would read your Outlook Web Access for you and then send emails to your other (Yahoo, etc) email address so it would get to your phone. They had an odd reply to email address so when you replied, it went back to them and they sent it out through your Outlook Web Access. No software was required on the phone - you paid them for the service and you had to give them your username/password for your corporate network (ask your network admin if they're okay with that!).

doesn't look like the calendar has event reminders. that kinda sucks...i use that feature all the time cause i'm always forgetting to do stuff.

What's today, Friday?

Yeah okay, time for the Exchange announcement. This whole campaign has been choreographed beautifully. No way we go through today without one or two more nice announcements.

The prediction is that today Exchange will be given the green light on the Iphone leading to the conclusion that the new Apple OS will be integrated as well.

This will be a fun day.

I would be very surprised if that feature is missing. That is a basic feature that is a "must have." The thing that concerns me is that there is apparently no syncing of desktop tasks and notes. I am anxious to see if that is true. That is also a basic feature that would be a major oversight if it is left off.

Damn it - it is looking more and more likely that the iPhone does not support SSL-encrypted POP and IMAP. What gives, Apple?

Calculator

Well, it looks as if one of my major hopes has been dashed. I was really hoping the calculator would have an RPN option for input. That alone would have added at least $100 to the iPhone's "value," to me. RPN calculators are not cheap - this would have been a great feature. Oh well, maybe it is buried in the options...

Still looking forward to getting one -hopefully- tonight.
