Apple is targeting a sub-$500 starting price for its upcoming fourth-generation iPhone SE model despite a raft of rumored upgrades coming to the more affordable device.

According to leaker Revegnus on X, the U.S. launch price of the fourth-generation iPhone SE will either remain at the same $429 starting price as the current model, or will see an increase of around 10%. Either way, Apple's intention is to keep the price below $500.

Last week, The Information reported that Apple plans to release a redesigned iPhone SE in the spring of 2025 that will remain the "cheaper" option in Apple's iPhone lineup. The design is said to be similar to the standard iPhone 14, which means Touch ID and the Home button will be replaced by Face ID and a display notch.

Along the same lines, the iPhone SE 4 could have an OLED display rather than LCD, and the display size will increase from 4.7 inches to 6.1 inches. Other rumored features for the next iPhone SE include a USB-C port and an Action button.

The panel prices for the iPhone SE 4 are said to be a lot lower than suppliers charge for the OLED displays used in the iPhone 15, since the panels for the SE will use legacy parts identical to those used in the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14, so the suppliers won't need to make new investments in R&D. Display manufacturers are believed to have been bidding to supply the panels since at least last August.

The third-generation iPhone SE was released in March 2022, so there is likely to be pent-up demand for a new model that includes some of the latest features of Apple's flagship iPhone models. For everything else we know about the iPhone SE 4, check our dedicated roundup.

This raises a question I've been pondering for a while. Who is the "regular" iPhone for? The iPhone SE looks like it will gain an all-screen front with FaceID and presumably the latest chip and presumably lack the multiple cameras and dynamic island. At the same time, those who want the best cameras and performance will be drawn to the Pro line up. I'm struggling to see who in 2025 will walk into an Apple shop and opt to pay $300 more than the SE for an ultrawide camera and dynamic island ...

Sounds good for people wanting an entry level iPhone.
Having one teen and twins which approaches teen age and needs refreshed iphones, the SE is probably what they will get. Im keeping the pro models for my self. 😂

I would think the minimum price would be $499, but I think it will be higher. Nobody outside the executives knows what price they’re targeting, so this is a ridiculous rumor. Regardless, I think it will be a big product.

We’ve seen it happening with the Mini when the SE had an almost similar form factor. Now the entire form factor has gone. I expect this to happen again, especially as the nee SE will be even closer to the way more expensive regular iPhone with the same form factor.
The SE will likely cannibalise the regular iPhone, resulting in a very fragmented market. Then Apple will probably conclude this market is too small to continue. In 5-10 years we the. won’t have the Mini, nor the regular iPhone, nor the SE. Only the large and expensive Pro models will remain in that case.

I’m sticking to the 13 Mini as long as possible. As soon as I really need to replace it, I’ll look for a similar sized iPhone. If there’s no alternative at Apple, I’ll look elsewhere. It would be my first step leaving the Apple eco system.

It might get the notch but it doesn’t mean it may also get Face ID. iPad Air is good example, it has a great internals but has Touch ID on sleep/wake button to keep costs low. Would not be surprised if iPhone SE goes in this direction instead to keep the costs low.

Entry level phone

$500

Ii honestly don't know what I'm going to do. I don't want Android, with Google tracking everything I do. I don't feel like $500 is an entry level price for a phone. I don't want AI and other bloat that just sucks the life out of the phone's RAM & CPU & GPU.

I don't want a photos app that sucks CPU scanning every image I take, giving me worthless facts that are turning into links & ads. (EDIT: The Maps app, too, is getting more ad friendly. Oh, and the Weather app is also designed to have ads someday. It's all so depressing.)

I just want a phone with contacts, calendar, photos, music (my collection, not a subscription), a few apps, & a browser.

Is the Linux community working on a phone/tablet interface?

The only reason I’ve purchased iPhone SE every generation is because:
  1. The display didn’t use PWM (flickering)
  2. The form factor was smaller and lightweight
Now that those two things will not be true, there is absolutely no reason to buy this. If I wanted to torture my eyes, I’d just get the 15 Pro.
