This raises a question I've been pondering for a while. Who is the "regular" iPhone for? The iPhone SE looks like it will gain an all-screen front with FaceID and presumably the latest chip and presumably lack the multiple cameras and dynamic island. At the same time, those who want the best cameras and performance will be drawn to the Pro line up. I'm struggling to see who in 2025 will walk into an Apple shop and opt to pay $300 more than the SE for an ultrawide camera and dynamic island ...
Those who also want to be able to see their battery health and cycle count and limit charging to 80% because those features apparently require a current flagship model (i.e. iPhone 15 or above)

Don't worry. Apple will find other ways to artificially limit features to newer flagship iPhones.

I got fed up waiting for a decent replacement for my SE2020 and it’s rapidly diminishing battery usefulness. Grabbed a refurb 12 mini instead and love it. I never did think the SE2020 was a sensible replacement for the original SE anyway.

I originally wanted a small iPhone for when I go running, and the ever increasing size of phones is not good for that. But these days, I have an Ultra 2 and don’t take phone on a run anyway. A new SE would be good, but it needs to be special to tempt me now.

Why 2025? It should be out NOW.
iPhone sales are dropping fast, with todays inflation and high interest rates people can't afford expensive iPhones anymore.
And you were really thinking they almost need to drop this in September

There is not pent up demand for an SE. There is pent up demand for a cheap phone. The price of new ones are moving in the wrong direction compared to affordability of the general population which is way down due to inflation of things like insurance, utilities, food, gas.

This SE has nothing to do with the previous ones. It has no Touch ID, and has OLED with PWM -- it has all the bad stuff we are trying to escape with an SE.

Can’t imagine it will have the latest chip and I would assume less ram and some other lower internal specs but at the same time most people don’t need any of that. I have an iPhone 12 Pro and other than needing to replace the battery I don’t really feel I need better performance. Most smartphone cameras are also pretty decent these days but that’s probably the feature that may sway people the most.

It would be hard to recommend folks buy an iPhone 15 versus the iPhone SE once they're basically the same phone except for a few features that most people never use or care about anyway.

In fact the lack of a "Dynamic Island" will probably be a plus for some.

They probably still have a stockpile of the pre-15 display configuration with the notch
The post says panel manufacturers have been bidding on making displays for this rumored phone since at least August.

As an aside, it seems wild if that’s the case - I’d think it wouldn’t take nine months for Apple to take bids for a phone display unless it was crazy new tech. Which for an SE it wouldn’t be.

Under $500? It will probably only have 32 GB of storage.
The most affordable iPhone we created, Starting at $399 with 32 GB storage with an all new iOS 18 Lite operating system. We have stripped out the AI operations and other unnecessary features to give you the most optimized experience with the iPhone SE 2025. Our iOS 18 Lite optimizes storage space by compressing system files by 50% and by default, photos will be taken at 8 MP and videos at 720p because anything higher than that would be detrimental to our customer experience. /s

At this point I think a USB port is a foregone conclusion. It’s required by regulations.
By regulating what port to use, EU basically innovation in USB pots.
Imagine if EU made USB A mandatory ?
we would have never seen USB C, and USB would still be struggling with 3.0 speeds if Intel/Apple didn't work together to develop thunderbolt.
regulation is not good in this situation.

They probably want the bottom dollar price they can get.

Last year I traded in my 2nd Gen SE to a 13 mini right before Apple stop selling the 13 mini. Its small, light, well made and meets all my needs. Larger phone are not ergonomically useful or desirable for me. I know that I am part of the minority and it is a shame that it will most likely be my last iPhone, as this form factor appears to be gone.

None of that happened so it's really irrelevant.

If someone comes up with a new connector that is better than USB-C then they can use it, they just have to support USB-C as well - sort of like how Apple supports USB-C charging with their latest laptop designs, but also offers MagSafe. Surface with the Surface Connector and USB-C, etc.

I bought an iPhone 13 last year from Best Buy and it's my first ever iPhone. If I hadn't, I would have purchased the next iPhone SE. Though I wonder if the next iPhone SE will go eSIM only? That's why I purchased the iPhone 13 so I can easily switch phones. My NVMO (Mint Mobile) charges a small fee after the 2nd eSIM swap within 12 months.
Yeah, that's my concern.. eSIM only. I really need to research the eSIM thing.. I need to learn how to switch eSIM numbers without having to go to the carrier - if that's even possible.

For me.. running/hiking is my time.. the world (and its gadgets) is left behind temporarily. I'm an old US Navy vet.. no one bothers me before I have my coffee or while I'm running.

I recently switched back to Android and am happy as can be. The OS (IMO) is superior to IOS and I got so much more for my money. Iphone 15 and 15 plus still have 60 hz - are you kidding me??
Good luck with that subpar google ecosystem and terrible android apps lol.

Anyway, i am a pro max girl but the Se line holds a special place in my heart so I’m excited to see what this will pan out to be

Bullseye; especially since for all of the SE models to this point, they've pretty much have gone through part bins of previous iPhone models for them (as the 1st gen SE was a 5s with more updated internals, the 2nd gen an 8 with more updated internals, and then the 3rd gen being the same footprint as the previous one)

Too bad the SE doesn’t have the mini form factor. Would fill two market requirements with one device. Of course I’d switch from my 15 pro to the SE (assuming they could do just a bit better on battery than the 12/13 mini)
Apple was aiming to make the mini the new SE, but they have decided to abandon it unfortunately due to battery issue.
