Entry level phone

$500

Ii honestly don't know what I'm going to do. I don't want Android, with Google tracking everything I do. I don't feel like $500 is an entry level price for a phone. I don't want AI and other bloat that just sucks the life out of the phone's RAM & CPU & GPU.

I don't want a photos app that sucks CPU scanning every image I take, giving me worthless facts that are turning into links & ads. (EDIT: The Maps app, too, is getting more ad friendly. Oh, and the Weather app is also designed to have ads someday. It's all so depressing.)

I just want a phone with contacts, calendar, photos, music (my collection, not a subscription), a few apps, & a browser.

Is the Linux community working on a phone/tablet interface?

"Google tracking everything I do" is mostly FUD tbh. Buy an Android phone if you like the Android OS better. Buy an iPhone if you like iOS better. Don't worry so much about the tracking boogeyman because it is just a boogeyman.

Why 2025? It should be out NOW.
iPhone sales are dropping fast, with todays inflation and high interest rates people can't afford expensive iPhones anymore.

As far as inflation goes, the two highest inflation years (at least in the U.S.) since the iPhone launched in 2007 were 2021 and especially 2022. Based on estimates, these also happen to be the two highest global sales years for the iPhone in its history. The iPhone has seen notable sales declines in the past when inflation and interest rates were lower.

I would think the minimum price would be $499, but I think it will be higher. Nobody outside the executives knows what price they’re targeting, so this is a ridiculous rumor. Regardless, I think it will be a big product.

They regularly leak these things to analyst and reporters as a way to test reactions before they officially put things out.

6.1”?! Laughable.

Far too big. iPhone SE 4 = ❌ 🔥

The iPhone SE 2016 remains a gem! Small form factor, light, easily held in the hand, a real home button (none of that haptic nonsense), no ridiculous notch, pocketable (!) and a treat to use.

Oh, well. That ship has sailed. Too bad.
I love my original SE as well and keep it even I got SE 2020 because CPU was needed for voice recognition app.

But there are two major disadvantages of 2020 model to any other phones from my experience. Really low outside screen visibility and much worse Wifi reception. Camera also do better with bright spots.

Certainly, Apple tracks a lot (trying using iOS without Photos, Maps, etc. using GPS, for example), but they presumably don't sell ads against that data (yet?).

But you're smoking something powerful if you think companies collecting data about you aren't using it in profitable but nefarious ways. See: GM selling driving data to insurance companies.

This raises a question I've been pondering for a while. Who is the "regular" iPhone for? The iPhone SE looks like it will gain an all-screen front with FaceID and presumably the latest chip and presumably lack the multiple cameras and dynamic island. At the same time, those who want the best cameras and performance will be drawn to the Pro line up. I'm struggling to see who in 2025 will walk into an Apple shop and opt to pay $300 more than the SE for an ultrawide camera and dynamic island ...
Apple will probably give it a 720p screen and only 4gb of RAM.

If you want something small just buy an Apple watch.

We need to upgrade an 11 in our house, but it it doesn't look like this will be out in time to do that; it's a phone for a teen, so I'm not sweating specs on it at all!

For me, price is not the issue. Having an LCD option in the pack of OLED phones is a must. If the new SE is OLED then I'm done with Apple when my iPhone 11 kicks the bucket.

I recently switched back to Android and am happy as can be. The OS (IMO) is superior to IOS and I got so much more for my money. Iphone 15 and 15 plus still have 60 hz - are you kidding me??

It's embarrassing that 120hz isn't the norm across all iPhones at this point.

Under Steve it would have happened years ago now because "it's just that much better for customers"
Tim, on the other hand, saw an opportunity to jam all the phones into tiers and drive upsells.

This is what happens when an "Ops Guy" is in charge
It's sad to watch

An iPhone with Oled and face ID below 500$.
Now the SE truly starts to make sense.

I know a few people don't like OLEDS, and I'm with you, but the majority of the market clearly showed a preference for the technology.

Looks solid for what it is, but considering that all the current iPhones have the dynamic island, it's strange to see that this still isn't

They probably still have a stockpile of the pre-15 display configuration with the notch (especially considering that the 14 only had DI for the Pros), so guess I can't say I blame them

That's exactly what's going on
It's why we call these moves the "Tim Cook Parts Bin" moves

I've been told here on the forum that "that's good" and "I'm ok with that" and "what's the problem?"

Apparently Apple customers don't mind paying top shelf pricing for whatever old stuff Apple still has laying around and they cobble into a "new" product.

🤷‍♂️

I'm using an SE2022 at the moment and have an old Iphone 11 that I use when I want to take ultra wide or night shots. If this new SE is OLED, then I guess I'll buy me a used Iphone 13 or 14 in fair condition and just use that as a camera. I don't want to go the frankenphone route and replace the screen on those. It's a shame I have to carry two phones just so I can get better pictures because Apple won't acknowledge the problem with their OLED screens.

A Single camera version of the Mini would be the best way of differentiating the SE from the rest of the lineup IMHO.

It would cater to almost everyone the current SE targets and most of those the Mini targeted without cannibalizing sales of the bigger models.

…Why? OLED is a much superior screen technology than the LCDs used by phones
For using less power, yes. For everything else - it's a phone. A small rectangle of glass. You can make devices thinner with OLED granted, but never asked for that. There is nothing wrong with LCD, there never was + it doesn't give me eye strain and headaches. I could care less about "deep blacks" or saturated colours on a phone.

Yeah, I love my OLED TV ... but even I find OLED on a phone sized device to be "whatever"... doesn't really matter to me.

I hope they price is at $499, which gives me hope there could be an iPhone SE mini at $399 in the future.

I would also add that despite inflationary pressures the starting prices for a standard iPhone has been largely static at $799 USD since the 12 series came out in 2020, and $999 for the smaller Pro model since the 11 series launched in 2019. (The Pro Max technically increased in price by eliminating the lowest storage tier but comparing 256 GB to 256 GB models the starting price has also stayed the same since 2019).

I'm still on an iPhone 13. This iPhone SE is looking pretty good; new battery, updated CPU, USB-C, likely physical SIM. I'm in.. it'll be cheaper than a new iPhone 13.
I bought an iPhone 13 last year from Best Buy and it's my first ever iPhone. If I hadn't, I would have purchased the next iPhone SE. Though I wonder if the next iPhone SE will go eSIM only? That's why I purchased the iPhone 13 so I can easily switch phones. My NVMO (Mint Mobile) charges a small fee after the 2nd eSIM swap within 12 months.
