Maybe this is simply wishful thinking, but I think a new lineup with 4 new iPhone's this fall is very possible.

iPhone SE (new name, maybe Mini?). SE sized, Face ID, no bezel. $599 (64 GB) $699 (128 GB)

iPhone 6.1" (No clue what they will call it.) $699 (64 GB) $849 (256 GB)

iPhone X2 $999 (64 GB) $1149 (256 GB)

iPhone X Plus $1099 (64 GB) $1249 (256 GB)

They drop the SE, 6S/Plus, and 7/Plus, and include the 8/8 Plus still at current 7/7 Plus pricing.

X2 might have a $100 reduction this fall, meaning X Plus is $100 less too than what I wrote.

X Plus 256gb $1995 in Australia, current X 256gb is over $1800. Cant see Apple breaking the 2K barrier, YET.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.

Rename SE to mini, and rename X to Pro.

iPhone mini
iPhone
iPhone Pro

Sound familiar? They use the exact same scheme with the iPad and Mac line up.

iPad mini/Mac mini
iPad/iMac/MacBook
iPad Pro/Mac Pro/MacBook Pro

I like your thinking, outside of the fact there is a true distinction between an iPad (2017 model or even the 2018 model) and the iPad Pro.
What will be the upgrades to the iPhone Pro over the regular iPhone?

Some disagreements with your post:

You can’t compare a MacBook Pro to an iPhone. There is nothing “Pro” about an iPhone or any smart phone. It’s a device that used to make and receive calls, and everything else is secondary. Apple will never use the “Pro” moniker attached to the iPhone, as every year this comes up others thinking that they should use “Pro” and truthfully, it really doesn’t make sense to use that term.

I think they will use the numbering system as they always have, which has been crucial to the iPhone lineup which ages the older iPhones and shows the new models with the highest number.

Apple will not conflate the iPad “mini” and rename the “SE” to a mini. That’s just plain confusing. The iPhone SE was intended to be “Special Edition”, which very well could have been a one off device that was only offered for XYZ amount of time. My opinion is if they do offer the SE again and refresh it, I think Apple will just retain the current title as just the “iPhone SE” and discontinue the current 2016 SE.

How about ‘iPhone S’ for the new SE?

‘S’ as in ‘small’:

  • Apple seems to be stopping using the ‘xS’ naming schema i.e. the 8 was arguably a 7s
  • And Apple seem to be moving to a point where they are stopping with the numbering systems i.e. this year’s iPad is called just that. Ditto with the iPad Pro.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the top end iPhone is called the ‘Edition’ like the Watch.

However I guess it would have to have some sort of different materials used/features compared to the others so maybe they’ll just keep it as a ‘plus’.
[doublepost=1527930665][/doublepost]Like the OP, I think that the only other remaining iPhones to be kept will be the 8 and 8 Plus for those that are hold outs and like the home button, corporate purchasing schemes etc.

The 6 series is getting old and the 7 is too similar to the 8.

The current SE I don’t think will be kept either as if you play around with iOS 11 on it, it all feels a little janky now.

The iPhone SE 2 is going to be the last iPhone with touch ID i think but I'm not too sure.

and if I say touch id then the iPhone se 2 will have large bezels just like loads of the midrangers

Wouldn't think they'd drop the iPhone 7.

They can if the SE with no bezels replaces it in the lineup at that price point.

TBH i don't see a low end phone like an SE boasting the notch design. It'd have to be in the form factor of the original iPhone and extend the screen by 0.5 inches to get to the 4 inch meaning the wireless charging can't be accessed. Unless they are planning a 4.5 inch display or something. I don't see how a wireless charging thingy would fit in the iPhone SE 2. Besides, the SE is either going to have bezels or it's going to be in flagship territory which would mean disaster for the 6s and 7 which would be discontinued. I listened to EAP (everythingapplepro) and he said a notch design isn't happening although many 'trusted sources' are claiming it will have the iPhone X design in a four inch form factor. I honestly agree with the fact it's going to have the iPhone 8 design

They would never make a 4" iPhone with a notch. The phone clearly would stay the same size of the SE or essentially that same size while going all-screen, making it roughly 4.7".

4.7 inches it the size of the 6, 6s, 7 and 8 (NOT Plus). I think an extra .5 inches would do for the true iPhone X design and not 4.7 inches. If the iPhone SE2 was going to happen which it probably is but likely in September as a June release is out of the question it would have the iPhone 8 design in my opinion. I do not see a LOW END iPhone having a notch and face id. I wouldn't think the notch would fit Face ID. Going off topic, although it would have to be plastic, Apple could have put Touch ID into the side button of the X. Back on to the SE 2 argument, I think notches on lowend phones should be left to Huawei. Apple wouldn't do that without putting a hefty $700 price tag onto the "low end phone"

the 6.1 inch iPhone according to EverythingApplePro will be called 'iPhone.' Yes, just iPhone. The X2 will be called the iPhone X (2018), not XI or X2.

Some of these renders and fan made art are comical if the ‘Future’ SE. The iPhone SE will never look like the iPhone X in terms of how they are making it appear, which there have been so many conflicting rumors, I’m not sure others know what to believe anymore. I think if the SE is updated, it won’t be this year, but perhaps 2019. I don’t expect an updated SE at WWDC on Monday.

The redesigned SE with Face ID won't be a low end phone. It would start at roughly $599. 4.7" screen roughly.

They can still update the SE if they want and keep it in the lineup at that low price point.

$599? I don't think Face ID would fit in the tiny notch. Plus the battery will drain really quickly because of the edge to edge display. Maybe the iPhone SE 6 will do so.
[doublepost=1527968886][/doublepost]I think the SE 2 should just have the 8 design and updated specs and that's it.

The bigger question is if they can offer an iPhone with Face ID at $599. Perhaps not. I don't know.

I do believe an SE sized device with Face ID is inevitable at some point.

Some disagreements with your post:

Except the Pro name is just used for their better models at this point.

There’s not that much that’s “Pro” about the 13” MacBook Pro when it’s using a basic i5 and no dedicated GPU. However, it has many upgrades that make it a better model than a MacBook or an Air. The iPad Pro lost its major Pro feature (the pen), and all you get is a better display, camera, and better processor (which compared to the A11 isn’t as “Pro” as it was).

The iPhone X follows these exact same guidelines. Better display, better camera, exclusive features and tech that the non-X model has. If the 13” Pro can be called a Pro for the same reason, an iPhone X can be an iPhone Pro.

I think they will use the numbering system as they always have, which has been crucial to the iPhone lineup which ages the older iPhones and shows the new models with the highest number.

They stopped numbers on the iPad, and now it’s just iPad and iPad Pro. Notice the 2nd gen iPad Pro isn’t iPad Pro 2. In fact, the iPhone is the ONLY line now using numbers. If this was a problem, why isn’t it the iPad 7? Not to mention, what happens when we get to 2019. Are there two iPhone 10s? What if the X successor is iPhone 11? In 2020 will there be two iPhone 11s? Will they just start skipping numbers? iPhone 14 sounds pretty ugly too. It’s confusing to keep using numbers.

They never had this problem with the iPod lines, because they just called each one iPod. Not iPod 2, 3, 4, etc. even the iPod Touch line was just iPod Touch, not iPod Touch 2,3,4,5 etc.

Apple will not conflate the iPad “mini” and rename the “SE” to a mini. That’s just plain confusing. My opinion is if they do offer the SE again and refresh it, I think Apple will just retain the current title as just the “iPhone SE” and discontinue the current 2016 SE.

So using the term mini for an iPhone that’s designed for customers who want a mini iPhone is confusing, but the term “Special Edition”-which is usually used for a limited/one-off device, like you pointed out-isn’t confusing?

I think the question around a notch or no notch SE2 revolves around:

  • What price are (middle class) people in markets like India & people in in their existing mature markets who are more price sensitive, are prepared to pay for a new lower priced iPhone in 2018?
  • And what features are they looking for?
  • If price is more important, we’ll have an updated existing SE with 7/8 era components in a tweaked existing design
  • However, if Apple thinks enough people in this group are willing to pay a little more for features, we’ll get a notch SE - assuming that the Face ID component can be shrunk (which I expect is a project that they started even before the X was out).
  • I think the market of people who just like a smaller phone are probably of secondary importance to Apple
So if we knew the market research that Apple will know about these key target markets we’d know exactly what Apple was going to do with the SE.

Since we don’t I guess it’s fun for us all to debate this here :)

Except the Pro name is just used for their better models at this point.

Which has nothing to do with the iPhone. Apple is never going to name the iPhone “Pro” after it. The numbering system is useful for now , ready they change it or not in the future, it’s possible. But the Pro moniker is the brought up every single year and debunked.

But all the above in your quote is a completely separate entity and product from the iPhone. They are nowhere near comparable in terms of performance and productivity, which are used for different tasks. It Doesn’t change the iPhone is a commodity that is upgraded annually and it’s core functionality is for notifications and phone calls. There is nothing Pro about a phone regardless of how much tech is incorporated.

The iPhone X follows these exact same guidelines. Better display, better camera, exclusive features and tech that the non-X model has. If the 13” Pro can be called a Pro for the same reason, an iPhone X can be an iPhone Pro.

Then Apple doesn’t share your views here. Because if they did, I think they were they would have moved on to some different terminology for the iPhone. I have said it before, the numbering scheme for the iPhone is important, because it values the older model iPhones from the newer models with the highest number. I can’t see what they will do for the future, but it certainly isn’t going to be a “Pro” for a phone evidently.

Will they just start skipping numbers? iPhone 14 sounds pretty ugly too. It’s confusing to keep using numbers.

I Think your conflating again, because the iPad doesn’t have any relation to the iPhone and Apple clearly has different terminology for each product, from the MacBook, to the iPad, Apple Watch, etc.

My Point is, every year it’s brought up the iPhone should be named “Edition” or “Pro”, when Apple is not going to do that. I think the numbering scheme will continue until they develop some form of other a secondary title. Also , Some of the questions you’re asking me, clearly I don’t have the answers either, but I also think some of the points you’re making about the term Pro have been not a part of the iPhone for said reasons.

If the They never had this problem with the iPod lines, because they just called each one iPod. Not iPod 2, 3, 4, etc. even the iPod Touch line was just iPod Touch, not iPod Touch 2,3,4,5

I’m not sure why you feel the need to compare every product to the iPhone with a MacBook, iPod or iPad. Obviously they’re all different and they’re treated differently. Not to mention, the iPod is basically a dead product to the consumer anyways. I think its obvious that the iPhone doesn’t share the same course of action that the other products In Apples line up.

So using the term mini for an iPhone that’s designed for customers who want a mini iPhone is confusing

Because it doesn’t make sense. Why would Apple use the iPhone SE as a ‘mini’. When he iPad mini is just a smaller form of the iPad, when the iPhone SE is a completely separate device from the other iPhone models. I’m not following your analogy here and I don’t think it makes much sense.

but the term “Special Edition”-which is usually used for a limited/one-off device, like you pointed out-isn’t confusing?

Does The consumer really care what SE stands for? Anyways, the point is “Special Edition” was clarified by Phil Schiller, which obviously means it could be a one time offering for that specific model iPhone. It doesn’t have to follow suit like the other iPhone models doing with the numbering scheme for that purpose alone.

You genuinely have no argument other than “they aren’t going to do it because they aren’t going to it”, do you.

Nothing’s been debunked. Your only point is that the iPhone is an iPhone and they haven’t done that name yet.

You haven’t deconstructed anything I said. Your argument against the numbers was simply “it’s fine right now”, and you even ignored what I said about the numbering.

Not only that, are you the CEO of Apple? You know Apple’s every move? Apple has changed naming schemes time and time again. Remember when the iPad had numbers, then didn’t, then had Air, then didn’t have anything again? Oh wait, iPads aren’t iPhones so it’s irrelevant according to you.

I wouldn’t bother they comment a 100 times a day on everything but never answer a post made directly at them, some call it deflection.
