Rephrasing, the SE design is classic and the SE 5S S design was the most admired iPhone design ever produced by Apple, a smaller screen phone for those that loved the design priced at a level low enough to gain some users from Android.
Totally get that it was admired by many - apart from the small size it was definitely unique in the market at the time with the slab design (which I still love to this day). But the iPhone 5 was the reason I defected to Android for two years. The screen was just too small for me and it was considerably behind its contemporary flagship rivals.

I just don’t think it will be making a comeback it will likely be a XR type replacing it ..

it’s had it’s reign that design I still have my 5s still but I prefer my iPhone 7 If I must admit I prefer the 4S design if I’m honest for smaller iPhones they just look like class workmanship ;)

I'm still using my 5s. It's terrible it won't be able to get upgrades.

Small, discreet, elegant, powerful.
Why, Apple?

Recently the battery on my daily-driver 6S ate it, so I purchased a cheap backup SE to use for a week during the interim.

It was interesting that I liked the SE best when the screen was off. It’s a fantastic size for holding and ergonomically. The problem is that Apple is clearly optimizing the OS for larger screens now, so a lot of things look and feel very cramped on the SE in ways they didn’t used to (5 and 5S). If Apple prioritized the size it would still work fine, but they don’t, so it’s frustrating. And typing was a mild nightmare of constant mistakes.

All told, going back to the 6S was an overall relief. It’s not a size or shape that has ever been ideal, but the added width makes all the difference.

I love my SE, I want a small phone. I'm guessing the future of small phones is the Apple Watch? With it's own App Store it's nearly time for the Apple Watch to be standalone and become the smallest phone!

If 2020 comes and goes without a proper SE followup that's my gameplan. I already bought a Series 4 Apple Watch with LTE and I'll probably just use it and leave my phone at home as often as possible.

Eventually, yes. But for the Apple Watch to be a primary for a phone, Far more advancements are required in silicon/processing/cellular capabilities before that happens. But I do believe that is Apples vision one day for the Apple Watch, aside from the health advancements.

I was team "I want a small phone" for a long time but I can't imagine using my watch like that.
