Basically it mostly boils down to screen size and the cameras. The rest is negligible. I have big hands so I need a bigger screen. If that wasn't the case I would go for the SE without hesitation. Most of the back camera comparisons show minor differences. The Wide Angle is a bonus, but not a necessity. You have to take into account your daily use of a phone then go from there.

Let me break down some of the differences.

What the SE does not have:
Larger Screen
Wide Angle Lens
Night Mode
Deep Fusion
12MP Front Camera VS 7MP
Face ID
4GB RAM VS 3GB

What the 11 and SE both have:
A13
Wireless Charging
12 MP Back Camera with Portrait mode (SE for humans only)
Stereo Speakers
Haptic Touch
327 PPI Screens with Wide Color Gamut P3 and True Tone.

This is one of the most asinine things that I have ever read. Intelligent people save their money instead of burning it on things they do not need.

Don't throw rocks if you live in a glass house. No one buys an iPhone SE to show off that they have an iPhone. Perhaps you are trying to show off that you have an iPhone Pro? "...they are shallow..." Re-read your post my friend, because your accusation of shallowness is reflected directly upon yourself in the daftness of your words.

My SE 128GB cost me $250 bucks, and I'm laughing all the way to the bank. Who in their right mind would spend $1,000+ dollars on a phone? That is insane and stupid. Typical consumerism. I can afford an iPhone Pro. I do not need an iPhone Pro. What I need is a fat bank account so I can buy your assets at a discount when the bank takes it all away because of your poor financial habits.

Trolling aside, the SE is a very capable phone, and Walmart is running one hell of a deal for it for AT&T and Verizon customers. It's the smart money move to make.

I think he was trolling or being sarcastic.......I hope.

Lol, this post made me think of my previous boss (retired). Super, super thrifty. Probably saved 50+% of what he earned. Now that he's retired (and likely realized the money's no good to him once he's gone), he goes on cruises with his family to the tune of $20K a year. He still refuses to get a cellphone and mobile plan though. Says his landline and DSL internet is good enough. :p

Wish I had his self-control but I enjoy my iPhone and iPad too much.

It has been a difficult journey for me. My path has been obstructed by many walls that I myself created. I'm 28 years old. At 23 I had to file for chapter 7 bankruptcy due to poor financial habits and risky gambles in business.

The last two years I have seen great success to due a shift in my attitude and way of thinking. I started a business with literally zero dollars, and have grown it significantly. My tools were an iPhone 7 and a 2012 Thinkpad X220. Now I'm rocking the iPhone SE and a Thinkpad X1 Yoga Gen 4.

We do not need the fanciest and grandest things to make us successful. All we need are basic tools and the right attitude towards life.

The only walls we have are the ones we build ourselves.

There are many variables. A person’s use cases determine the choice, but also the market they’re in. With $399 price (and those crazy $199 deals) the SE is heavily geared towards the US market where millions of people just need an iMessage machine that also happens to do some other neat things.

But for example in my country the SE now costs the equivalent of $500 vs $730 for the 11. And nobody uses iMessage so the competition with Android gets real.

So while the SE might be a no-brainer for many in the US, it is a much harder pick elsewhere around the world. I’d argue that the 11 feature-wise and value-wise too is a much more competitive model worldwide.

Good points. In India the SE is a bit more expensive than the one plus 8 apparently lol.

Yep. For our family, iOS is non-negotiable. With the Walmart deal, it's certainly a no-brainer upgrade to our old SE1 and 7. Even at full MSRP though, the SE is quite affordable for an iPhone for US customers.

Mind, advertised prices in the US don't include tax. In my location, sales tax is 10.25% so that $399 iPhone SE is really $440.

Found these articles quite interesting:

At smartphone ASP of $185 in the Philippines, it appears even the SE is too expensive for a lot of Filipinos even without the additional margins tacked on by 3rd party sellers.

If i was you i’d wait for the 5.4” iPhone 12. But if you do not want to wait until fall, then go on with iPhone 11.

You can then easily sell it and buy the new iPhone 12 if you do not like it.

Btw i use an iPhone 11 but i do not like its dimensions. I’ll buy the 5.4” iPhone 12 when it comes out.
I’m very happy with the 11. I just miss the 2x zoom camera like my iPhone 8 Plus had. I don’t really care about of use the wide lens.

Im quite lucky in the U.K. with my civil service discount of 6%. Got my SE for £393 which is approx $484, so about $44 more than an iPhone SE would cost in your state Rui no onna. Considering Apple really love to make up prices in the U.K. im quite happy (E.g. iPad Pro 11 is £769 and $799 in US, yet the iPhone 11 Pro is £1050 and $999 in the US... wtf don’t make sense).

Maybe has to do with foreign exchange rate at time of launch?

It’s all up to you honestly. So you like small phones? Do you want longer battery life. Do you want a phone in the middle? Not too big not too small? Are you a fan of the different colors? Do you want Face ID? We can’t really answer this for you to be honest. Just give you our opinion.

For me the iPhone 11 was a no brainer. I came from an iPhone X and honestly for ME going to the iPhone SE 2 is like going back to an iPhone 8. I like Face ID. I like not having a home button. I like the different colors I could’ve got with the iPhone 11. Battery life is probably better on the 11 than the SE

I'm on original SE and use that as an excuse to not use a phone as much as possible. These things waste your good years away and only make you lonelier. By having a little screen, you end up not wanting to scroll through mindless content. By having a crappy camera, you end up not taking the time to take 10,000 photos a year no one will ever look at. Get what is the cheapest and try to not use it as much as possible.

Except the SE is really intended for India’s market. I think the misconception about the iPhone SE, is that Apple released a ‘budget friendly phone‘ for consumers, which is partially true, but it’s really meant for other countries where phones are priced exorbitant, where it’s not affordable for phones like 11 Pro-Max.

But the iPhone SE is priced exorbitantly in India and costs more than Android flagships. In Brazil the SE is the equivalent of $699 apparently. Even in Europe the exchange rate sucks. It's only the USA which has these incredible $199 deals. If Apple intended for the SE to overtake India and other developing countries markets, they didn't price it correctly.

After trading in my 8+ my SE cost me $166.84 after tax

Loved the 8+ but got tired of how heavy it was and not pocket friendly.
Completely happy with my decision...

Apple is not intending the SE to ‘overtake India‘, it’s called product expansion globally, it’s not just a phone meant for China or North America. $399 is affordable as an iPhone will probably ever be, simply because Apple probably isn’t making that much off this phone to begin with. Not to mention, even if Apple had the SE priced lower in India, android is the primary operating device in that country specifically for devices that range under $199.

But it isn't priced $399 in India, and your previous post stated the SE is really intended for Indias market, but the $399 price only applies to the USA. In India, the price is $560; and that's $560 in a country with significantly lower wages/disposable income than the USA. In all these emerging markets the phone costs more, it is only the USA where its priced competitively. Hence why I disagree with the assertion that apple priced this phone for emerging markets like India, because they obviously didn't. More like they competitively priced it for a wealthier western market, to get more paying for apple services (since more disposable income=more apple services) and eventually upgrading to more expensive devices. Even in Europe, which is more Android centric (excluding UK) the SE isn't well priced when compared to midrange Androids like the A71.

Yes, if you look at ~INR Exchange, your math would be correct. It’s more expensive in India, but even when the original 2016 SE launched, the phone was never geared towards North America, that was easily for Indian/Chinese market. If you look at Apple globally, this phone specifically is product expansion in third-party markets. There’s no other reason for existence of this phone.

Sure, your wording was inappropriate above when you mentioned the word ‘overtake‘ India, that’s why I initially refuted, Overtaking essentially means having controlled market saturation, which they don’t have in India. Essentially the SE a ‘placeholder‘ per se in India as an option. I realize I’m being Pedantic, but that was my initial qualm how you worded it, but since you elaborated differently, I see your point.

(since more disposable income=more apple services) and eventually upgrading to more expensive devices.

This is correct, and directly correlates to an Apples main goal. If they can tie the user into the ecosystem, then it produces volume of sales Segueing into other products.

The misconception about the SE is very simple, it was never geared towards North America, it’s meant for countries even when other phones are still priced exorbitantly, it acts as Option when phones like the iPhone 11/Pro are nowhere near affordable. That was the main goal of the 2016 SE and is the sole reason why Apple returned this phone at a $399 price point.

Agreed.

I know my cousins in the Philippines think the iPhone SE is too expensive. It costs more than rent in some places. I reckon a more acceptable pricing is around ~$300-400 inclusive of VAT. Even then, I expect the old design, small size and short battery life are big deterrents.

The SE, to me, is a device for those who are already embedded in the Apple ecosystem to keep them from straying to Android. Also an iPhone that parents might give their children as an alternative to inexpensive Androids.

The thing is much like in the Philippines, I expect the pricing of the SE is still not affordable for most in India.

As for services and other products, most of my friends and cousins in the Philippines spend US $10 per month or less on their cellphone service. I think most of Apple's service offerings is realistically only affordable to the rich.

Just checked and it is roughly $525 for a new 64gb SE in the Phillippines, and over $600 for a 128GB model, defo not an amazing deal considering $525 is a lot more to the average person there than in the USA. If this phone was really geared for the wider world, it would have been more expensive in the west to subsidise lower pricing elsewhere but it feels like Apple did the opposite.

Even here in the UK where iPhones dominate the market, the Phone costs £419, which translates to $517. Mind you, all apple products end up more expensive here; my 11 128GB was £779, which is roughly $960.

In the west, Apple can make up for the revenue via services since those are relatively affordable compared to income. In the Philippines? US $10 every month on non-essentials isn't something to just shrug off.

As mentioned in the blog post I linked to, there are no Apple Stores in the Philippines. Options are grey market or authorized retailers that add a fairly hefty profit margin so that's part of the reason iPhone prices are so high. Also, since iPhones (even SE) are too expensive for most, you don't get the benefit of economies of scale.

He said this leads to a “scale effect”, whereby the vendor benefits by shipping a higher number of units to Japan than the Philippines: he cited shipments of 5 million iPhones in Japan during calendar Q4 2019 compared with 169,000 in the Philippines.

“Apple Japan enjoys huge cost advantages due to the scale of operation with much lower cost per unit comparing with the Philippines.”

Market appetite and ability to pay for any iPhone model also tips the scales. Xie explained ASPs in Japan stood at $600 during Q4 2019, compared with $185 in the Philippines. This makes Japan “a great match for Apple’s product portfolio” he noted, adding the vendor topped the tables in the country with a 56 per cent market share during the quarter.

“Apple would tend to conduct an aggressive pricing strategy to achieve a higher shipment volume and market share in Japan”, while in the Philippines “Apple’s offering is not affordable for the majority”, resulting in the vendor holding a 3 per cent share in Q4 2019.

Consequently, the vendor is more likely to pursue “profitability rather than volume” in the Philippines, resulting in it tending to “set a higher price” there.

Below are average salaries in PH. As one can see, these salaries aren't exactly conducive to buying $500+ iPhones or wasting money on non-essential subscription services.

BPO = Business Process Outsourcing (e.g. call centers, etc)

I think, at least for countries like India where an iPhone SE does not equate to $399, that an iPhone SE (at $560) is simply projected as the cheapest iPhone. It is not supposed to be anything else. it is the cheapest entry into the iPhone world.
