Well, if Apple wanted you to have an unlocked iPhone, they would have sold you one. But they didn't, did they?

There is a difference between "what Apple wants" and what is legal and ethical. I pretty sure Apple wants us all to buy two of every product they make and a .Mac family pack. Is it wrong not to do this?

what does apple think about this?

wonder if :apple: will be cool with this as there may be large numbers of people on t-mobile who wish to stay with their existing service but get their hands on this bad4SS phone.

I believe it is legal to reverse engineer products, anyone know, would this be legit if one was to unlock the phone and use t-mobile service?

I stumbled on this thread while eating ice cream.

Does anyone know if this hack works with ice cream, or only the iPhone? If it does work with ice cream will it only work with certain flavors?

I would like to be able to use Ben and Jerry's on T-Mobile.

Thanks!!!

Unlocked, whoohoo! Even though I'm with ATT, I tried two different TMo cards and was able to make phone calls. I haven't tried using edge or restoring the phone yet though.

These instructions are dead easy -- try it this way, it's much more satisfying :D

I know, all you gotta do is follow the freakin' instructions. I can only IMAGINE all the newbie posts, and thread starting in a couple of days on "how to" & "help". Just be patient, and read.

It's impossible to follow the instructions when you get an error at step one. The associated files with iNdependence doesn't say what the error means.

Thank you for helping me to believe in the goodness of people once again.

For the newbs like me. If receive the recovery mode error like I did. Turn off and reboot your phone. After a reboot jailbreak worked and I could install SHH.

Am I getting this right?
I am currently a T-mobile customer.
Now I can buy an iphone, trick into thinking it's activated, unlock it and then put my sim card in from my current T-mobile phone and have access to all the features of the phone as if it were on the at&t network?
Will it still receive emails, visual voicemail? Will I still be able to connect to the internet when away from a network?

People should hold on and wait for the nice GUI app that's coming soon. It should make it super easy.

Activate/Deactivate

If we swap a new sim out after the unlock do we need to deactivate it, or do we pop the new SIM in and activate.

Questions (sorry i'm an iphone newb):

1. Can I unlock the iPhone WITHOUT first activating with AT&T? I.e. I can just get me an iPhone at an Apple Store, go home, run the software hack via my iBook, put in my T-mobile SIM card, and have a fully-functioning iPhone (minus the visual voicemail).

2. Is it possible to use T-mobile's EDGE with the unlocked iPhone?

No visual voicemail. Visual voicemail is AT&T specific at this point. You will have access to all the other features as long as you have an active data plan with T-Mobile and are able to configure the proxy to use the T-Mobile data (has not been addressed yet).

1. Yes, using a program such as iNdependance.
2. Yes, however, it hasn't been addressed yet as to how you would configure the proxy to accept the T-Mobile data as being the data source. Should be worked out within the next few days.

It's in the preferences under "EDGE settings" at least that's what the unlocked phones showed in the pictures.

I can't confirm first hand, but from what I've been hearing, you simply need just to pop in another one and re-activate it via iaSign or iNdependance or such method.
