From the instructions, seems like u need updated iphone to 1.02, in that case it may mean that the unlocking could be undone by another software update..

After the unlock, you do not need to reactivate when you insert another sim.

Have you switched between AT&T SIMs and whatever other SIMs you have been using? If so, I'd like another confirmation on this, as I knew the old iPhone Sim Free application you needed to reactivate via one of those means if you switched back and forth between AT&T and other SIMs.

I tried it with two different TMo sim cards.

I believe you need to re-activate however when you switch to a different carrier, that's the consensus. So amongst the same carrier, you're fine, however, going from carrier to carrier, you're going to need to re-activate via one of the aforementioned means.

Okay, I take it back, I copied a patched lockdownd file to /usr/libexec/ which bypasses activation when you restart.

You people are so funny...

YOu think only AT&T is getting scrwed and Apple could care less that the iPhones are getting unlocked. .. ummmm. NO, Apple does care BIG TIME!

Apple is reproted to get roughly $10/mo from ATT per service plan that uses the iPhones. That Means, if there are over 1million hack phones, they would be loosing roghly 120million a year.

So yes, Apple would get affected by using another carrier since they get no profit sharing with ATT on that.

another successful unlocking using an already activated t-mobile SIM. EDGE does not work since I don't have a data plan, but calls go though and I get good reception.

the directions at http://iphone.unlock.no/ work beautifully. i used fugu to transfer the files between my computer and the iphone and terminal to ssh to the iphone.

my only concern is of course how long this hack will last before apple resets it.

good luck!

I dont think thats going to happen.
They got a 5 year deal with them, unless they want to buy them out but for what? To provide Tmobile service? I dont think that company is that big compared to AT&T or Verizon.

Contracts can always be broken. Like I said, it is a workaround that at&t may not mind because they would profit off most foreign customers (excluding the country's already set to launch the iPhone officially) that would be out of their reach anyways.

You can also use sFTP to transfer files (get filename)

We'll see.
You probably wont be able to upgrade the firmware when an update comes out. Shouldnt be a prob syncing with itunes though.

Sure! because the world is just the USA! I, for example, do not exist and am a product of your imagination; so there is NO WAY I could go to NY in a month and a half and buy one myself, thing that would be impossible without the unlock for at least 18 more months.

Who cares if apple or AT&T are losing money.
Im sure they got enough. :D
People pay for the iphone they should be able to use it however they want.
Even burn it if they want :D

what does jail break mean and how do u do it on osx?

I wonder if someone can make an official thread for newbies on this.

I was a newbie just two days but ago but I caught on the bandwagon pretty quickly so you can too.

jail breaking the iphone is activating it and allowing files to to be written to it. you need to use independence.

independence is very self-explanatory. after this, just follow one of the tutorials posted on the OP's first post.

if you get flustered, take a break! I had to do it three times before it worked. and what sucks is that the process takes a while. if you completely give up, wait for the dev team's GUI app that will probably involve doing nothing (like IPSF's app).

It will be interesting to see what ATT does.

Their first option is to sick the lawyers on everyone and try to work out ways to screw up the unlocked phones.

Or they may get realistic and say, 'we're' stuffed - every time we close one hole two more pop open". In this situation ATT might actually try to work out deals with other GSM operators - especially T-Mobile. If they work with Apple to get the deals done, give the carriers access to the technology that allows everything to work, including visual voicemail, they might come out even. That's better than they may face if they leave it to the lawyers.

T-Mobile might actually be possible as ATT is already working with them in other areas, like sharing towers.

Might be interesting.

I noticed that I don't have any SOUND COMING FROM THE SPEAKERS!

****...what did I do wrong?

I'm gonna try it one more time. damn it...

Curses. Get all the way up to the minicom step and it won't let me type in the AT commands. Any help? I guess I could start over by restoring my phone. So much time, though!

EDIT: Guide on that site also forgets to mention some things like making the /usr/local/etc folder and installing the BSD Subsystem in Installer.app so you have minicom there. Still, pretty complete. Feel like I'm so close...

I know...
