Hey y’all is anyone else really excited about the iPhone Ultra!? Like I know it’s losing FaceID and MagSafe but I’m super excited about this phone. I love foldable and I’ve had the Z Fold but I hate anything not Apple, so I sent it back and I’m waiting for the Ultra. Who’s with me?
I'm excited about the tech and the fact that Apple is finally introducing a folder - but I'm not too jazzed by the price. I used a Motorola folder for 2-1/2 years before coming back to Apple, and it was excellent and cost only $599 retail. Makes me think the Ultra (starting price rumored to be $1,999) may be overpriced - - -

One thing I am curious to see is how much it would cost to lease. If the lease cost isn't too bad maybe I would get it over the Iphone 18 Pro or Iphone Pro Max.

It'll stand out simply because it runs IOS and it's the only option unless you go Android.
While Samsung have clues from Apple's order of their screens, which has enabled them to rush the Fold 8 to market, Apple will have some cool software / UI surprises in store that Samsung at this stage have no idea about. I'm totally looking forward to learning what they have in store.

So all you people saying no MagSafe is a deal breaker I hate to break it to you but that’s rumors that Apple might be ditching MagSafe in every model eventually

I'm interested but if the price rumors are true, I'm out. Especially since their new leasing options don't support MVNO carriers for whatever reason.
You will be able to change carriers you will just need to do a month on one of them

I can see why people think there won’t be MagSafe though. Also for those who use wallets the ultra will be very awkward with them as wallets will hang off the bottom of it

Noticed the “Foldables are creating problems no one asked for” (have I got that right?) crowd has gotten quieter in recent months 😂

The iPhone Fold is creating a hype we haven’t seen since the iPhone X.

Let them innovate for people it’s designed for. Doubters can continue to use slab phones in peace. Just leave Fold curious fans enjoy this time in tech history 😏

That indicates absolutely nothing, none of Samsung’s current flagships, even the slabs, have magnets.
The pixel 10 pro Fold has MagSafe, pretty easy to say that that is an indication that the iPhone fold will have it.

iPhone Air and iPad Pro say hello.
Also, all of the other super thin foldables that have MagSafe, like the pixel.
The magnets Apple uses in the current iPhones are only 0.55 mm thin, thinness is not the barrier you think it is.

So basically, all I can gather from the responses I got, is that people think it won’t have magsafe… because a fake knock-off dummy unit from months ago didn’t show it, because Samsung deliberately left it out, and because, uh, feelings and vibes.
Absolutely nothing with substance, no real source, no reliable leaker confirming it, just… trust me bro.
😂 Why are you being so confrontational?
All of this 'adding MagSafe via a case' - does this actually work? Are you really able to charge efficiently that way? Wont lie, I'm all over that Fold but losing MagSafe would be a deal breaker. I have MagSafe chargers all over the house, I even have MagSafe travel chargers tripod adaptors etc.. losing that makes iPhone a little less of an iPhone in my opinion.
I thought it didn’t add charging ability, just the magnet for accessories.

If the phone doesn’t come with wireless charging, then a case with MagSafe isn’t going to magically add the feature.

Wrong. Efficient wireless charging has always been a feature of MagSafe. The QI2 standard is based off it.

MagSafe cases are essentially a way to align the charging coil positionally for optimal wireless charging.

If a phone supports wireless charging then that’s what a MagSafe case does, but if a phone doesn’t support wireless charging, a MagSafe case will only be good for accessories.

A MagSafe case itself won’t support any specific charging standard that the phone doesn’t already include.

It’s entirely possible that Apple omits MagSafe in the phone itself but release cases that use the ring to align the coil for wireless charging.

I’ve also seen people mention the impossibility of a wallet. Apple could (and is maybe likely to) include a landscape-oriented MagSafe wallet, not dissimilar to a traditional wallet.

I’m super excited to see what Apple is going to pull out their sleeve. I’m probably not going to buy it since it’s going to be insanely expensive here in the EU.

There’s no way apple will ditch MagSafe on every model. I believe their goal has been to make their devices entirely port less for the beauty and ingress protection. No MagSafe means no way to charge.

I’m not sure you see my point.

This is what I meant.

This too.

Ugh this is not making sense to me. If the phone doesn’t support wireless charging ie. it has no coils inside, then a case with the ring won’t enable wireless charging. It’s just a magnetic ring for MagSafe accessories?

I do - its more that just supporting wireless charging. The MagSafe standard facilitates fast(er) charging.

Omitting MagSafe is different than including wireless charging though. They could still have a wireless charging coil without the magnets internally in the phone to support MagSafe. Then they could include the magnetic ring on a case itself so that it aligns the charging puck with the coil that’s inside the phone. That’s exactly how magnetic charging works currently for devices like the Samsung - the magnet is on the case to align the puck with the coil inside the phone.

I do believe Apple will include wireless charging in the Ultra, but they might want to save a mm or two by not including the magnets in the inside of the phone and offering a MagSafe case solution instead as a middle-ground solution.

Had an opportunity to try out the Samsung Fold 8 today, and I am sold. As a non-fold/flip person (until today), I really enjoyed the opportunity. The form factor is slightly bigger than my wallet, so there are two evenly sized items going in my pocket instead of one square-ish and one slab-ish. Front screen is usable for all apps (keyboard minimization is a must), and the slightly wider keyboard was a plus in preventing typos. Transition from outside to inside was seamless as well and should only get better as developers optimize their apps.

The price has just become a number, and irrelevant at this point. If there is a foldable announcement this September, there will be one in my hand shortly thereafter. 👍

I visited Best Buy a couple of days ago to try the Samsung Fold 8 after seeing a lot of good YouTube reviews on it, and given it looks like a close copy of Apple's design... I was kind of blown away how nice it was. Felt so nice in the hand -- the device was like an iPhone Mini combined with an iPad Mini. The proportions of both screens were really nice, and the whole thing was so light. If the iPhone Ultra is similar in design, I'm totally sold, at almost any price!

Samsung put out their Z8 Fold pricing and for 1TB you get 16GB of RAM similar to what Apple does on iPad Pro models.

So does that mean Apples is going to up that another $500 for 1TB TO $2999 or will
that be the 2TB price. Funny how Samsung is calling their taller z 8 fold the Ultra model.

I am waiting til next year to do anything so we will see what ultra 2 looks like compared to iPhone 20 Pro

Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide Model) Pricing

    • 12GB RAM + 256GB Storage: $1,899.99
    • 12GB RAM + 512GB Storage: $2,099.99
    • 16GB RAM + 1TB Storage: $2,499.00 [1, 2

I hope the iPhone Ultra has a 2TB option. The only other iPhone to have it is the 17 Pro Max.

I did the same and felt the same! Saw the fold 8 at best buy and this can replace my ipad mini, and pro for phone use and entertainment I feel. I cant stop thinking about the potential. Esp since I still prefer my 5G surface pro for mobile work and computing needs, that ipad pro can possibly go. Now vision pro, that heavy cumbersome headset, in inverse was not worth it to me at *any* price.

I do wonder if Apple would put extra RAM on the higher storage models. Since the Ultra doubles as a tablet it would make sense.

Well, if you’re going to use it for photography, there aren’t any professional cameras on the iPhone ultra. Just probably the same cameras found on the iPhone 17 or maybe the iPhone 16. only a wide ultra wide 48 megapixel. I’m not even sure if ProRes video will be available either. but I could be wrong, none of us know yet.

Thanks for the explanation.

Actually, the initial iPhones with wireless charging didn’t have magnets either (I think I skipped this generation). Although when MagSafe was added, Apple always had the magnets in the phone, which is probably why I initially found it hard to get my head around the iPhone Fold going back to not having the magnets. Interesting anyway.
