My M1 Air wiggles bad up-down and wiggles little left to right - but never knew until now because who cares.

I’ve heard of issues on older usb-c connectors, but myself and my wife have not had any problems over the last few years. We have Beats earbuds, 12.9 iPP, new iPad (Air?), 16” M2 Pro Mac Book Pro (those “pros” sound redundantly silly), WatchUltra.

Well, those topics are controversial by nature, which drives engagement, which sends a signal to the program: hey, this topic must have been popular, let’s let everyone else also know its existence.

There you go. Unless MacRumors uses some sort of AI to intelligently analyse thread content, nothing much can be done.
Or... moderators?

While yes they Can pull those threads out of top recommend bar, AI can help reduce their workload. Moreover, AI can get proactive eventually, albeit with the risk of having false positive, although I don’t think that would have much impact otherwise In this specific scenario.

Yup, I always said the USB-C port is a disaster vs. the secure and reliable lightning connector. Now it's confirmed: USB-C sucks. The connection is fragile at best:

https://www.reddit.com/r/iphone/comments/16putnb

Mine is the same.

Thanks, EU. You forced an inferior port on all of us. Horrible.
Delusional rant at best. USB-C is one of the most reliable and useful connections. The data transfer speed advantages alone make it superior to lightning.

You got a dud, bring it to the Apple Store and get a new one. You act like no one ever had a problem with lightning ports just cause YOU never did and ignore the countless products from other manufacturers, let alone Apple (iPad, MacBook, Mac Studio, Mac Pro, iMac, and now iPhone, pencil, AirPods, etc.) that have used USB C for years without issue.

Apple made the product better for all Apple users, thank you EU for forcing their hand to adopt the more powerful and useful port.

Love my iPhone 15 Pro Max and I’ve had 0 problems with the USB-C port since launch. Use it for charging, HDMI, USB-C hubs, hard drives, everything has worked. If there was a widespread problem, you’d hear more people complaining about it and not just share a Reddit post. Internet forums are notorious for complaining about anything and everything.

EDIT: forgot to mention, I’ve replaced dozens of Lightning cables over the years. I’ve yet to replace a single USB-C cable for any of my devices. Headphones, vape, audio interfaces, Nintendo switch, Xbox series and PlayStation 5 controller charging, so may items use USB-C, hell even my wife’s blender uses USB-C to charge, and I’ve replaced 0 cables and have had 0 problems with any of these ports failing or being loose. But somehow lightning is “superior,” hilarious.

Yeah. We could see a sea of Twitter posts complaining about USB-C if they are that bad by now, knowing MacBook adopted it SEVEN years ago.

Realized I have a pretty good illustration of the difference in robustness and longevity of USB-C vs Lightning (see attached video): 1) is a MacBook 12” from 2017 with USB-C and 2) is an iPhone X from 2017 with Lightning. Both devices are in working condition but the MacBook cable has become looser over time and once plugged in, you sometimes have to fiddle with it to get it to charge. So it’s not that USB-C is awful, it’s just not as physically strong, durable, and ultimately reliable as Lightning.

Have you tried contact cleaner on the port? The port itself may just have dust in it. Spray contact cleaner on the cable and plug it in a few times to clean it out.

USB-C ports have been on the Mac for 8 years now. Not a single issue with them getting loose on there. The port itself is not the problem, it's probably Apple not securing it properly on the iPhone 15 series.

Is it USB-C that is the problem or how the port on the iPhone was manufactured? I had a 2015 MBP that was rock solid yet had one USB A port that was a bit loose and iffy at times depending on the male USB A being put in it. There is no true standard for make and fit.

I had been using same port on my heavy duty TB 2018 MBP to charge and the port became noticably loose by year 3. But no issue with my now M2 Air and iPad Pro. I don't have iPhone 15 so can't comment on Apple's design there.

I think the same rules apply for any charging ports: don't wiggle the port and don't hold the phone using the cable. Components eventually wear out and that's normal. Nothing can be worse than micro-usb port anyways.

I never transfer anything via wire. I believe most users don’t. So if we disregard transfer speeds and (claimed) environmental impact, I must say IMHO lightning is not worse, or perhaps even better, than USB-C. It’s physically smaller and clicks nicely when plugged in. Everyone is bashing lightning but it was Apple who came up with that idea of port that you can plug either way. UCB-C just copied that concept. Remember before that Android phones had those type USB ports that you can plug only one way and they were flimsy, didn’t click nicely. So I think Apple doesn’t get enought credit for lightning and USB-C is just copy of that concept that is declared being ”the” solution.

Hahaha yes, I dislike the micro USB connectors and the really fat weird shaped early ones

I've only used the USB-C port on my iP15P a few times, so I can't say anything about that, but I have used it quite a lot on my iPad Pro and MacBook Air for the past 3+ years and they aren't wiggly at all. Given that, I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with USB-C as a port in this regard.
My 2016 USB-C ports are wiggly as can be. My iP15 PM (and the 14 Pro before that) has never been plugged in because MagSafe charging works so well.

Or the fact that the iPhone use a daily utility that will see way more wear and tear on the port…
Not necessarily.

I plug and unplug stuff in my MBP USB-C ports at least 12 times a day. Mostly for power/external monitor, plugging in an external drive or cable to charge my mouse etc.

I plug in my iPhone maybe once every two weeks for photos syncing.

Just so you know, I have a few USC-C cables. One of them, by Native Union, is very hardy and has lasted years but it comes out easily *by design.* They say it’s so the cable doesn’t pull the device off the desk with its heavy weight.

‘Sorry Jane, not agreeing with you on this one. There is nothing wrong with the USB-C connector. Do not believe everything you read and seek knowledge from multiple sources.

Everyone has commented except the OP.

My USB-C charger falls out from the port from time to time from random wiggles when using while charging. I cleaned out some lint that was in the port and it’s a little bit better now, but it will still fall out of its connectors from time to time. The charger will still be in the port but I will notice my phone isn’t charging anymore so I have to push it back in. It can get pretty annoying.
I've had that problem on every Lightning port.

I’ve used USB C on both Apple iPads, MacBooks and a number of Android phones and never had an issue with loose connectors.

There’s nothing inherently inferior with USB C ports.

If Apple can do high quality USB C on iPad and Macs for almost a decade then they most certainly can do the same for iPhones.

I’m open to this being a thing. But it’s most certainly only Apple’s fault if so.

The EU doesn’t do quality control for Apple, that’s Tim Cook’s responsibility.

Wiggle is what prevents pressure on the port - it's actually quite sturdy and not fragile (it would be more fragile if it was firm). It's by design. Lightning was smaller, so I guess they could make it tighter.

USB-C is quite good.

That’s why I’ve been using these for the last few years:
Magnetic usb connectors
IMG_2636.jpeg

I’ve been using these for several years now on all of my USB devices without any problems. Also now on 15 pro. I think that these connectors help keep the receptive part from getting loose over time due to the daily in-out, in-out. My USB ports after many years are still quite tight as a result, and they are also cleaner because of using this product.
