people who get mad at people for saying iTouch are also sour grapes.

not to mention people who correct people for saying Iphone, but theyre also sour grapes

Are you implying Flash isn't dying, useless or crappy software?

I have ClickToFlash installed on four Macs, and I honestly don't remember the last time I actually clicked on any Flash content (although my kids use it with some NickJr online games). And I don't remember the last time Safari crashed on me personally since I installed ClickToFlash, but I've seen it crash while my kids were playing their games ... Flash seems to be the common factor in pretty much every Safari crash out there.

If Adobe can't even get Flash working well on a real computer, I don't want it anywhere near my iPhone.

That's not to say I wouldn't welcome it if it were available, and stable, and demanded low resources. But I have no expectation that Adobe will put any resources into fixing Flash.

The people who know Flash is bad for their phone get it. Those who still want it, even after people have explained why it's bad, just don't get it.

I'm sad so many people don't get it. The guy who said that we (as iPhone users) are behind other platforms because they get flash is delusional. We're ahead, and will pull even further ahead when Flash is put on those devices.

Wow, insightful rant.

Flash is dying, and I'm happy. HTML5 will replace it, and not suck.

Thank you for your response, as it illustrates my point exactly. If you havent already, please read the wikipedia link.

in light of being too lazy to research this myself...
Do you care to explain? and why HTML5 is better?

im not being sarcastic, i just dont know.

No, you just don't get it actually. Some of us want it, not because it's some wonderful panacea, and not that we're Flash junkies. Like it or not, it's just a reality for some sites that we have a desire/need at the time to access. It would be nice to have the option to view these sites if we wish.

What IS ridiculous is people who are against it even being an option for iPhone users simply because THEY don't want it. That's controlling, narrow mindedness.

I'm all for having Flash on the iPhone.

Think of the battery life :'(

You must not have read very well. Adobe has clearly stated that they've addressed the battery drain issue:

"The browser-based runtime leverages the power of the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) for accelerated video and graphics while conserving battery life and minimizing resource utilization."
http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/pressroom/pressreleases/200910/100509AFPforMobileDevicesandPCs.html <---here's the link to the entire article

Plus, how hard would it be for Safari to have a toggle switch to turn flash on and off as you desire, just like it does with downloadable images (or the phone itself with bluetooth, 3G, and wifi). That would give us the ability to browse any website without getting the annoying "blue box".

There is absolutely no reason why Apple shouldn't allow this capability on the iPhone. It blows my mind that some of you people side with them on this. How can you be happy with a web-browser on your phone that only works on about half of the internet pages? Flash is very widely used. This is like Apple coming out with a new iPod and telling you that it isn't compatible with .mp3 files.

Replace "Flash" with "Internet Explorer" and you get what people were saying three or four years ago.

Flash must die. It's proprietary and a horrible resource hog (and like I said above, I have no expectation that Adobe will fix this ... they've had years to do it. If Adobe fixes it, I'll change my mind).

It'll take time to kill it since HTML5 (video of a demo for those who want to know more) isn't mature enough yet, but it'll happen, and the sooner you wean yourself off sites that use Flash, the sooner it'll die.

And really, I'd like to know what these Flash-only websites are that people absolutely must visit.

Pretty much agreed. OP before you foist the wikipedia link on me again I'll take flash on my iPhone as long as there's an off switch (although tbf I jailbreak and the jailbreak community would probably come up with something). Don't force me to use Flash though, I strongly dislike it because it makes my computer run like crap and I can do without safari crashing on my phone just because of an obnoxious ad. I'd welcome the choice to use it though.

Aah, the irony. Besides the fact that the video you posted of HTML 5 is... bingo, in flash!

Hmm that sounds a lot like the same BS arguments give on why MMS was not on the iPhone....

Lmao. People actually think iPhone not getting flash is a good thing. I'll take useless dribble for $200 Alex

You're clearly able to have your own opinion on it. I see nothing but cons, however.

HTML 5 isn't fully supported yet in browsers. It's new. It will take time to be widely adopted. Nevermind that the original video was probably posted as h264 and someone uploaded it to youtube.

Here's why Flash is bad. Why any non-open standard is bad. No one but Adobe can make a Flash plugin. Which means that you are at the mercy of Adobe to provide support, optimization and updates. With open standards like HTML 5 and H.264 anyone can use it. It can be extended and issues can be addressed without going through another company like Adobe. It means you can (in theory) view a page on one browser, and see it exactly the same on another. What you take for granted everyday when viewing a website is the result of open standards. Flash is not open.

Have you watched CPU usage on websites that support flash on your mac? Watching a youtube video on my Mac Pro pegs one processor at 100% Watching a HD movie in H.264 uses significantly less processor power. Adobe can claim that battery life and cpu usage is better in their new version but why then is their desktop version still utter garbage? They have proven time and time again they do not want to support the Mac platform. But now they want to about face and support the iPhone? Please.

What Adobe is afraid of is that they will have no foothold on Mobile platforms. And Apple not backing down on saying no to Flash is freaking amazing. Apple is in a position to support HTML 5 and make developers support open standards. This means the end of flash in the long run. Which means no obnoxious advertisements that demand your attention on websites. Why the hell were flash blockers created in the first place? We shouldn't have ever had to create such a thing. It's bad enough I have to install browser plugins to control the problems of another browser plugin.

Go talk to ANY figurehead in the Mac community and they will tell you they use ClickToFlash on their Mac and that they are happy there's no Flash on their phone. Option or not. By giving users the "option" you are basically giving Adobe more of a strangle hold. By not giving users the option you are saying "no, we've had enough of your bull Adobe. Fix your problems or die in a fire."

Cons for flash
- Not open: No one but Adobe can fix the problems in Flash
- Which means possibilities for exploits in the code
- It's a resource hog on a device with limited resources
- Flash was never designed to operate on a handheld device from a user interface perspective.
- It's a pile of advertising: I don't want my iPhone blaring "You've just won an iPod Touch!" whenever i goto a website
- Terrible Accessibility support
- Non-standard UI controls

like I said, have your own opinions on it. But Flash is the devil basically. It doesn't play nice with anything. It's a hack job of a plugin. I live to see the day Flash is abandoned by Adobe.

Pros for Flash:

It's available NOW!

I think of it this way. Would you rather have had crappy Copy and Paste in the original iPhone 1.0 software? Or are you like me, thankful they waited and provided a much better solution in 3.0?

Sometimes waiting for a better solution is worth losing the immediate availability of something inferior.

I know what you're saying, but in the meantime we get the blue square. It's just friggin' annoying. Now, if you say we're going to have these capabilities of html 5 in a few months, then fine, but I doubt it'll happen that fast, right? So, in the meantime, we open sites and can't use them. For example, I can't log into the Panera site when I'm eating there, since I suppose it is flash.
