no he got it from experience. You honestly think AT&T has the best coverage everywhere? What if there's a building in the line of sight of the tower and his house but Verizon has full bars?

Where I'm moving AT&T has zero data and very little voice coverage and Verizon and Sprint have 3g. Should I keep AT&T because Luke Wilson says so or should I go with experience?

Go with Rodimus Prime's 2 step process.

I was talking about the particular area and not about having best coverage everywhere. Every carrier has its good and bad locations.
I traveled thru many places in MA and never had any problems with full 3G signal and proper coverage.

I hope you are being sarcastic. I have two Iphones and love them, I've lived in an Edge only area since my first iphone and I have been okay with it.

Now that I am moving to a place without even edge you are telling me I should keep At&t when I can't even access data? No email? No internet? And only able to make calls if I drive around looking for it to switch from "no service" to one bar??????? I hope you are joking. If not i'd call you the fanboy.

No I wasn't being sarcastic. Also, EDGE area means what to me? You should buy the phone that best fits your needs. I am blessed in beautiful 7.2 Mb/s HSDPA, hence I don't complain. If you need the coverage you deem, switch to a carrier that provides it and be done with it.

See that's the thing I hate, people get an iPhone knowingly that AT&T has problems in their area or is working on it. Your ideal situation is to leave AT&T.

Got to love the fact that some one points out logic and then gets called a Verizon Fanboy.

I might like to point out that I have been on Sprint Verizon, and AT&T. Hell I was on cingular when it was bought out by AT&T. I stayed on AT&T and when I split off my line from my parents I bought yep an AT&T phone.

I am still on AT&T because it is the network that is best for me.

I followed my own advise.
Step one choose the network that works best AT&T and Sprint were my choose network wise. AT&T won out because most of my friends and family were on it so the M2M part.

Then I choose that phone that I liked the best and I went with Blackberry.

Ok, hold on a moment there...

First you say you are tired of AT&T and hate them and want to go with Verizon. Also, that Verizon is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Now, you are saying you are fine with AT&T and they suit your needs?

Which is it?

No you are putting words in my mouth.

Read what I wrote. I said AT&T sucks in the OP area (based on what he said) and Verizon is good.

No where I did I say I was tired of AT&T. I have never said that. Stop lumping in with the AT&T haters.
I believe I have posted in other thread I do not like Verizon personally and I left them after they lied to me. I know I have stated I have used Sprint and like them and have posted multiple times that I choose AT&T for the network that suited my needs the best.

You are a self admitted Verizon hater and bash them every chance you get. You said in one thread that you hate Verizon have the mess with the ETF and said that you will always bash them.

I know for a fact that I have posted and always advocated choose a network that suits you needs the best then choose your cell phone. People blind Apple love made them blind to that fact and choose the phone then worry about the network. It should always be Network first then Phone.

As for my draw backs I have posted about AT&T they are there and I have pointed out the good things Verizon has done and chooses they made that payed off in the long run. But a Verizon hater like yourself refuse to see it that way.

Also know for a fact I never have hide which network I use and prefer to use.

... snip ...

Then I might have confused you with another poster... Honestly, to much AT&T hate is nuts, and when the simplest thing is to go with the carrier that best suits people's needs.

I won't lie. I have shown my disdain for Verizon, and will always will because of that ETF issue (crappy coverage was just the start). Although lately I have started to tell people go with the carrier that best works for them. However, I also tell them or imply why they buy an iPhone and then complain of AT&T... see there?

It is doubtful that there will be an iPhone introduced for Verizon this summer. So either switch to at&t or wait for the Nexus One to come to Verizon.

Wait, didn't you just give me a load because I knew that AT&T didn't serve my area, and so I went for a Droid. Might want to get your stories straight.

& by the by could you ever get around to giving a reference on the source that says AT&T bought the hardware but not the subscribers from Alltel? Really, enquiring minds want to know.

My piece of advise would be go with the network first, then the phone. The iPhone is a decent enough device but in my area AT&T is pure garbage. The signal was weak across the college campus I attended, and I had no signal at work where I spend 8 hours a day. Often times I had signal but apparently not enough signal to initiate a data connection, often resulting in network timeouts. AT&T's coverage map is also very deceiving. It showed full 3G coverage in my hometown but I know of many places where only EDGE is available. I had an AT&T tech admit that not all towers are upgraded to 3G even if it shows 3G coverage in your area. My personal experience is AT&T = crap, however your personal experience might be that AT&T is pretty good.

Try out AT&T. I mean really try it. Port your number to AT&T and use the phone as your one and only device. If you don't like it within 30 days call Verizon and tell them you want to reactivate your account and port your number and they'll be more than happy to do that for you. Then, return your phone to AT&T and you're only out the activation fee + service fee for the time your account was open. It's very important if you were to go back to Verizon though you call them first so you don't lose your number.

Cell phone coverages and experiences can be vastly different between two users even in the same city. Arguing which network is the best won't make a bit of difference in the end.

Nobody except Apple can say for sure, but I'd be willing to wager that we will see an Apple phone on Verizon (or at least an announcement to that effect) by the end of the year. My guess is that Apple will unveil a sexy new iPhone for AT&T in June and wait for the buying frenzy to subside before announcing some kind of Verizon offering.

Some people will vehemently disagree and I'd be willing to discuss my reasoning, but will not get sucked into an argument with anyone who takes an unpleasant tact.

I agree. I think we will see a new iPhone for Atnt in June and eventually the iPhone will come to other carriers. But, look how fast Google brought the Nexus One to all major carriers. The Apple/Atnt contract is supposed to be up soon, so due to pressure from Google Nexus One sales, we might see Apple take a new approach and finally put the iPhone on all carriers. Either way, Google is doing a great thing. This type of competition is game changing, and it's going to benefit all of us.

No chance to see the iPhone on all carriers in the us.
It doesn't matter what google, nokia or any other company is doing.

Sure, you want to make a bet?
We will find out in around 3 months.
I will search for the thread and pull it up if you are still around.

3 months? You said NEVER. That means ever, as in 15 years from now or 50 years from now you are saying the iPhone will not come to all major US carriers.

Correction. :)
Can't say never but not any time soon. Even when all us carriers eventually upgrade to LTE then you will be able to use any device on any network. But again with all different frequencies and technologies that the LTE devices will need to fall back to you will still need different chipsets for each carrier. Like some with tmobiles 3G signal, others with CDMA, wimax, AT&T 3G frequency etc...
So it will still need Apples blessing to make it work seamless on each different network and that might mean designing and releasing up to 4 different iPhone models for US consumers.
Possible but not any time soon I think.

I admit I got an iPhone 2g because I am a fanboy to some extent. Won't happen again until they actually serve this area and offer a plan that makes sense for the light to moderate data user.

Don't take the bait and get sucked into an argument. Regardless of whether or not the iPhone ever goes multi-network, if this guy thinks that Google's offerings don't matter to Apple and the market at large, then he clearly hasn't thought this through.

Unlike the first years of the iPhone, Apple has some legitimate competition now and the last thing they want is for people on Verizon's network to pick up Google's phones and realize that they have a lot to offer. That's precisely why I believe the iPhone or another Apple phone will appear on Verizon by the end of the year, although I think June is doubtful.

If you want to sit there with hopes and wait its up to you.
We all saw how it went with the iPad.
Get yourself ready for another one of the same this year :)

As it happens, I'm not planning on waiting. I'm relatively happy with AT&T in my area and will almost certainly get the next iteration of the iPhone on AT&T this summer.

That said, I think we'll likely see a Verizon announcement for an Apple phone (not necessarily the iPhone per se) by the end of the year. While I have a slight preference for their network, for me it's not worth waiting for, especially considering the likely limitation of their network not allowing for calls and data use simultaneously.

Hey guys let me ask you this question, if I buy the 3gs now and they release a new software wont I be able to upgrade the software to make it a 4.0???

Man every time I play with the iphone i want. I should probably just go buy the 3gs.

I'd wait a couple of months. Again, I don't expect a Verizon announcement as soon as June, but if you get a 3Gs now with a 2 year contract, you may be kicking yourself in a couple of months when you could have gotten an updated iPhone.
