I have been an avid reader of these forums now for the past 3 years (started contributing much more recently though) and have seen a zillion and a half whiny posts about how terrible AT&T is, yadda, yadda, yadda. I've just never understood it personally. Am I just the one lucky guy in the crowd? I seriously doubt it.

I travel a lot for business and for pleasure...and I would never think of leaving home without my iPhone. I bring it with me everywhere, all day, all night. I've also not experienced problems with AT&T in my travels. Boston, NY (city and state), Wash DC, beach in North Carolina, mountains of West Virginia, Minneapolis, Las Vegas, all over Florida, around Dallas Texas, San Francisco, LA, Ohio....I get connected everywhere. The worst I've seen in the past 3+ years was that the connection was lost deep in the mountains briefly, or the server stopped responding due to high volume maybe a dozen times...which usually lasted less than a few minutes.

Over nearly 4 years and across a good selection of the country? I seriously can't imagine that being deemed "bad" service, but people will say it nonetheless. I am always left with the impression that someone posting how "rotten" AT&T is makes a point of amplifying their grievance...and we aren't really getting a good picture of things just reading about complaints on a forum. Sure, there are likely areas without coverage, but really...it is in no way dire like folks try to make it out to be.

Watch someone come along and start calling me an AT&T fanboy for saying that, in my experience, I think their network has very much done me well personally. I've been satisfied enough that even if the iPhone went to Verizon (my former carrier), I'd stay with AT&T and not think twice about it.

----

If you haven't bought an iPhone yet....it might actually be the safe bet to wait another 2 months and see what the next generation is like. In my estimation, no other phone out there could replace my 3gs...the competitors are just not attractive to me at all. I definitely am looking forward with anticipation as to what Apple will bring forward this spring though.

I agree with everything you wrote. I travel over 10 times the amount of places you listed, a lot of them much smaller towns, and I never seem to have problems.

Welp I got a killer deal...

A customer of mine has a 3g that he used for a month and went back to the blackberry. So he is giving me the 3g. Now I dont have to buy the 3gs can deal with the 3g til the new one comes out in June!

Works out perfectly!

I waited a year for it to come to verizon then I finally made the plunge on the 3G. At&t service is great in the Baltimore area. I still have my verizon family plan, been rockin with my razor for almost 4 yrs now. Still holding out hope for a verizon version soon, sucks paying 2 cellphone bills though, lol.

Just released a half hour ago, Verizon iphone in September:

"Rumors of a Verizon iPhone 4G coming this year seem to be true as the Wall Street Journal reported today.

"One person familiar with the situation said Pegatron is scheduled to start mass producing the CDMA iPhones in September..." - WSJ

This ties in with Apple Insider's rumors back in November 2009 where they speculated the release of a Verizon iPhone in the 3rd quarter of 2010.

While there is no news on the Sprint iPhone 4G release, we can expect a similar date as the CMDA versions for both carriers should be rolled out by Pegatron (Taiwanese company appointed by Apple for manufacturing the CDMA iPhones) simultaneously."

And then from March 29 from Wired:

"As many would expect, Apple is developing an iPhone upgrade to debut this summer, according to The Wall Street Journal, but more surprising is the rumor that a Verizon iPhone is in the works as well.

WSJ cites sources who were briefed on a CDMA-compatible iPhone being manufactured by Pegatron, a Taiwanese manufacturing subsidiary of Asus. CDMA is the standard used on Verizon phones.

The sources said Pegatron was scheduled to mass produce CDMA iPhones in September, but a release date was not made clear.

Whispers of a Verizon-compatible iPhone have made the rounds since last year. However, this report lends the rumor more credence, as it was co-written by WSJ’s Yukari Kane, who accurately broke the news on Steve Jobs’ liver transplant and was also correct about some key facts regarding the iPad prior to its official unveiling. Some have speculated that Apple has performed controlled leaks through WSJ reporters, including Kane."

Sorry if this has been posted already. It was very exciting news to me as I travel a bunch and connectivity is more important to me than a gadget. I will be happy to have both.

Sorry friend, nothing official, and it says begin production in September. That means the EARLIEST you might see a Verizon iPhone is sometime in 2011....personally I don't thing you will see one until they roll out LTE still.

I've waited about 2 years every june for the iphone to come to Verizon. I'm now going to AT&T in June when the new one gets released and I have dropped off my parents family plan. I'll keep my blackberry for verizon just in case anything happens though.

This rumor is as good as the pizza guy saying it. "One person??" Until you hear something from an Apple rep or Steve Jobs himself or at least a NAME at one of these supposed companies it's going to or that's making it, the rumors mean nothing.

hmmmm, and what is the name of this forum?

4G for Verizon

My verizon guy said they may come out with a 4g phone by the end of the year...not an iphone but are they losing their edge in the mobile phone market?

They have about 23% of the smartphone market. AT&T has about 45%. The iPhone is about 25% of the smart phone market all by itself.

But, the Android OS is on the march toward both GSM and CDMA, sponsored by Apple's new arch-rival Google.

Of course the iPhone is coming to Verizon. Utterly obvious. Likely available by the end of the 4th quarter.

Well I suppose my name on a forum is about as good as the pizza guy, but I have it on good authority from someone (an old friend who regularly takes meetings with top brass at AT&T and Verizon) that something like this is happening. He told me so in December. Again, you have no reason to believe me, but if you go through my long post history here at MR, you'll see that I've never made such "unfounded" claims in the past.

But his information doesn't even really matter when you look at the logic of the situation. The iPhone came to the market and for the first two iterations, had no real competition. Now it has very legitimate competition from Google and Palm and even MS is bringing innovation to the table.

From AT&T's perspective, they have to be seeing diminishing returns on iPhone switchers and you know that's a very costly exclusive for them. Also, it's questionable whether their network in some of their key markets can handle significantly more of the most data-hungry phones on the market.

More importantly, Apple sure doesn't want Verizon's 92.1 million customers picking up competitor's phones and finding out that they're really good. They want you in the app store and they want developers to continue to favor the iPhone. I don't see how either company can desire exclusivity at this point.

My prediction has long been that we'll see a new iPhone on AT&T this June and then once the buying frenzy has simmered down, a Verizon version will be released or at least announced by the end of the year.

The CDMA argument is dead. Apple is bringing the iPhone to China and Japan. A CDMA iPhone is in the works and there's probably always been CDMA prototypes every step of the way this far anyway.

I'm not going to authoritatively say that this IS happening because I can't know, but in this case I think the thick dark clouds mean rain is coming. The competitors are gaining and Apple can't afford to ignore those massive CDMA markets for much longer.

Apple began production of the 3GS only a month ahead of time. China can make a LOT of anything in that time frame.

So if they actually were to start a model's production in September, then we could see it as early as October. At the least they'd want to hit the holiday season in Nov-Dec.

Absolutely. And Apple can't afford to wait until LTE is fully implemented.
