iPhone vs Samsung Camera Article

Having actually owned Android phones for many years (MyTouch, Droid 1, HTC Thunderbolt, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, Moto X, Note 3, iPhone 6+) (Note 3 my last Android phone) - I'm surprised by articles like this. Sure more MP is nice but .... I take thousands of photos every few months - a hobbyist photographer. I have a Canon 40D that I've taken 30k+ photos with but I find I'm using my cellphone mostly for ease of use.

Articles like this frustrate me because I find that I am consistently taking better photos with my 6+ than I ever did with my Note 3. Color is far more accurate, focus is 100% spot on, and lighting is almost always perfect. Sure, my Note 3 had more megapixels allowing me to crop more if I needed but compared to my 6+ there is a night and day difference. I found with my Note 3 - the increase in MP often resulted in blurry pictures and focus problems. Don't get me started on the fact that the camera app on the iPhone is tons faster/smoother than the Samsung camera app. Anyone with any photography experience knows there are some old Canon 10D experts taking 5x better photos than people with the latest. Megapixels help but aren't the tell all.

The only way I see this article having any truth is that they showed the 100% crop and people chose the one with more MP. Still, the iPhone photos look bad and seem to me that if I was in that same situation, I'd do a lot better.

every time i'm visiting at bestbuy or target , i playaround looking smartphone and come to samsung area , i stay there
play with samsung phone figure out that i choosing an iphone is right decision ,,, i feel apple still better ,

I've seen a similar comparison article before that concluded the Galaxy took better pictures. While I agree that the pictures shot on the Galaxy in the article are better, I don't think my pictures with my iPhone 6 are as bad as those shot for the article.

I ignore comparisons like this. The people in charge of comparing most generally have already decided who is going to win. It is just a matter of fitting the data to justify their conclusion.

I agree with you that more MP just for the sake of MP is pretty useless.
I would recommend you compare a current device against your 6+. I have the Note 4 and the 6+ and had the S6 as well. They all take great pictures. They all do better in certain situations but overall i would take the S6 camera as the overall winner. Rumor has it the iPhone 6s will have a 12MP camera.

I had an iPhone 6 for myself and found the photos to be unimpressive.

Just got another iPhone 6 for my wife and still find the photos to be not very good when compared to my S6.

The S6 pics just look better.

The gs6 camera just got better with 5.1.1 you now have full raw images and 50 ISO and also shutter speed control

Just wait and see how much better the gs6 will be in new camera tests that use the new camera 2.0 api from android in 5.1.1

What is there to debate? It's a blind comparison. And, after looking at the photos I agree with the conclusion. One thing noticeable is the cloud pictures on iPhone look oversaturated and artificial.

Not surprisingly coming from you.someone who has never given the gs6 any credit where credit is due. From the best screen and best camera you have never giving the phone the respect it needs. Your biased against it and your just plain wrong on the gs6 camera.

Heck even in this blind picture test the gs6 pictures were getting 5000 votes vs 45 in some cases compared to the iPhone 6 and this was done blindly to kill any form of company biased views.

I'm betting if they said what pictures were from each phone the results would have been the opposite because people like you would vote apple until the end of time.

Was it you that kept asking on what color rgb calibration the gs6 screen was using and kept trying to find some drawback on the screen compared to LCD? Can you finally admit that Samsung's super amoled screens are the best screens in the world period?

I have experience with both phones and their cameras. The Galaxy S6 takes far superior photos than iPhone 6/6 Plus under any circumstances. The F1.9 lens with 16 MP did excellent job. It has better colour reproduction, sharpness, white balance etc. The file sizes are massive for a phone up to 12 + MB sometimes. Also it has superior manual controls which I envy as I do not have them on my iPhone. Another thing is that with iOS 7 and iOS 8, Apple has compressed images heavily resulting very bad pictures. Hopefully iPhone 6S will take the throne from Samsung.

Also there was a blind test not too long ago with the iPhone 6, S6 and Lumia 930 and it was the 930 that came out as the winner on that one.

your overthinking this. Look at two photos side by side taken with both cameras. Blown highlights, check. Over saturation, check. It is what it is and my point is and I stick by it, despite being supposedly better hardware, the older iPhone tackles some difficult lighting situations better.

Here is a first raw photo vs jpg compressed photo using the new android 2.0 camera api.

The gs6 camera is getting a huge boost.the update is being pushed out now in France and t mobile has it unlocked but the stock camera app is not using the new api.you need to use a third party app for now but Samsung has it supported in 5.1.1.

That's the thing though, and there are threads on this very forum on the subject, the iPhone 6 is woefully inconsistent, and you MIGHT get a good photo, but it's not really point and click if you have to give more thought to lighting and distance.

That was my biggest issue when I had my S5 and iPhone 6 together. The iPhone 6 needed more work for a decent pic. Not even good, but decent.

The S6 is far more forgiving and faster, so getting the right shot the first time, is more likely and the pic overall will be superior. Though truth be told, I thought the photos on the S5, Note 4, and S6 were all better than the iPhone 6.

I don't think Apple has really been on top of the smartphone camera game since the 2013.

Here is my gs6 using instantgram and the picture is 1mp and 250kb took cell out and snapped this in under 5 seconds.

I kinda wished I used the stock camera and snagged it at 16mp but where is this over saturation you seem to keep talking about?

Maybe it's the display you are viewing these pictures?

Try going to best buy and using a gs6 to look at these pictures lol

Thank you for all the information. This is what I was thinking too. I don't have an iPhone 6 but my 6+ sure is doing great things for me. I'm happy to see cellphone tech continuing to grow. If the S6 is as good as they say then that's good news - but like MRU said - I'm very certain I could get better pics than they did on the article.

I won't let it bother me too much. Competition is good even if you're an Apple / Samsung fan - no competition = I start worrying. From the Note 3 to the iPhone 6+ there is a very noticeable difference for me. The camera is one of the biggest reasons why I buy a phone.

This is no small thing either. Cropping done well can make an already good photo better.

Zooming and cropping is largely impossible with the iPhone.
