help

i have a 2g touch windows it freezes every time i try to put it into dfu mode in redsnow, a tried like 5 times and evey time i end up having to reboot in itunes. please help :(

Apparently a phone that's been upgraded to 4.0 will have problems being put in DFU mode?
My friend acquired a 3G that was on 4.0. He is trying to get it in dfu mode and no such luck.

My cousin gave me his old iPhone 3G. It has 4.0.2 iOS, and I am running iTunes 9.2.

I cannot for the life of me get it into DFU mode to run redsn0W! I have tried every timing sequence possibility available!

-connected to computer
-tried it both powered on, and powered off
-power + home for 10 seconds (or variations thereof)
-release power and hold home until computer recognizes..etc.

The buttons themselves work fine independently. I've followed many youtube videos and step-by-step's to a "T", and NO LUCK!

I can't get it into DFU mode, and my thumbs are starting to hurt!

What is wrong!?

exactly the same problem :( HELPPPP!!!!!! people :)

Good to know I'm not the only one with this problem. All the posts I read say that it is user error. I just don't believe that because of the amount of youtube videos I've watched, and I'm doing exactly the same thing!

The problem is: When I hold down power+home (when the iphone is powered on), it just brings up the red "slide to power off" button, and just stays like that. It doesn't go to black screen after 7 seconds like it should.

I'm sad. :(

Here is what I do, maybe its the order one does stuff in:

While the iPhone is plugged in and connected to iTunes:

Press the Home key.
Reach and push the on/off/sleep key.
Hold the on/off/sleep key for 10 seconds. The display should turn off regardless what the phone is doing about 8 seconds into it.
Release the on/off/sleep key, keep the Home button down.
Eventually iTunes should pop up and say something along the lines of "there is a device in recovery mode here, and needs restored to be useful."

Disclaimer: This is on a 32GB iPhone 4.

Dude, thank you for your reply, but it's just not working! I tried it again IN THAT ORDER (which by the way, is pretty much the same prescribed order as the 50 YouTube videos and step-by-steps that I've already watched), and it didn't work, again.

What happens is that the red "slide to power off" screen comes up, and just stays like that for about 15-20 seconds, then goes back to the home screen like nothing happened.

Again, I am on iPhone 3G, 4.0.2 iOS, iTunes 9.2.0.61.

Try this:
Connect phone to computer while on and keep connected through rest of the steps
Turn off phone. Verify it is off by pressing the home button.

Hold power button for 3 sec
Hold power and home for 10 sec
Hold home for 30

Take off any cases. They sometimes interfere.

Thanks again, but it again did not work. And just to prove that I'm following everyone's suggestions, I took video of me following these instructions to show proof I'm not lying. It's not working!

In your video, I don't see the itunes screen. Where is it? Just like the other DFU variation, itunes needs to already be up.

iTunes is definitely open the whole time. I added an annotation to my youtube video to prove this (see the taskbar towards the beginning of the video), and also you can see iTunes syncing after the iPhone is connected.

iPhone 3GS won't go into DFU Mode NOT USER ERROR! PLEASE HELP !

My fingers hurt too ! I can not put my iPhone 3GS 4.1 into DFU MODE AND IS NOT A USER ERROR !

I have two other iphones (3g both, not in 4.1 fortunately) and I'm able to put them into DFU Mode easily, however, the 3GS just won't.

I noticed the same thing mentioned before, when I press the power button for a long time it does not power the iPhone off as it should be, or at least that's what the other iPhones do. Instead it will stay in the "power off" red bar, but it won't turn off.

Is my power button damaged? It puts the iphone to sleep and it performs any other functions normally, besides the one mentioned above.

Is it the 4.1 software "update" from apple that now prevents iphone users to put their iphones on DFU mode?

Anyone knows a reliable software method to place the iphone into DFU?

(RecBoot only puts the iphone into Recovery NOT INTO DFU)

Please help ! Thanks!

no dfu mode

i have the same problem. i have iphone 3g. jailbroke with redsn0w and lost my phone icon and when i tried to restore, it won't enter into dfu. the exact sequence of events that's been described in this thread is the same thing happening to me. i can't even get my phone to turn off completely. when i hold down the power button, i get the red slide bar but it never completely shuts off. it just eventually returns to the home screen. did you ever get a solution to this?

DFU Mode and iTunes issue.

My issue is this, I am unable to enter DFU or for that matter even reboot my Iphone 3G while my phone is connected to iTunes. But if I disconnect my phone from my computer, I can reboot just fine, every time. I have the latest iTunes 10.1 ( which I am thinking may be one of the reasons that this is happening) and the latest software update of 4.2.1 (8C148) In the past I have no issues getting into DFU mode and although it can be tricky it is not that difficult, at least it wasn't until recently. I see a lot of people here stating that DFU mode will ALWAYS work EVERYTIME and if not you are obviously doing something wrong. That is incorrect. Just because you are not experiencing the issue does not mean it does not exist. I am exploring the reason why this is happening and also the easiest way to get into DFU mode without using the power and home buttons and when I do I will post those results here.

I went through this as well (sorry to bump) the key is which most people forget about is to hold both buttons even AFTER the phone shuts off for a few seconds, then release the power.. Hope that helps.

I seem to be having an issue that I just cannot find an answer to...I have a
3G iphone that was jailbroken for use with T-mobile sim cards. The phone worked perfectly, until I connected it to my computer to download some game apps. Everything I tried to download wouldn't because it said that the phone wasn't properly updated to use with the apps. Not knowing any better I pressed update and it completely wiped my phone. I have tried EVERYTHING, and nothing works. I tried installing custom firmware that someone was helping me with, but the problem seems to be that I my phone won't go into DFU mode. This is what happens...when I turn off the phone by pressing the sleep/on off switch....it just goes black. There is no red slide button at all. Then when I press and hold both the sleep button and the home button, the apple icon flashes and then all I get is a pic of a usb cable and the itunes icon. It doesnt go away...the screen does not go black, it just stays there. Now, here is the weird thing...if I turn it off and then just simply turn it back on....the usb cable and icon are back. Wethor its plugged into the computer or not...thats ALL it does.

Can anyone PLEASE tell me what the problem is??

Maybe you're trying to enter DFU state incorrectly?

This should help. Then restore to a stock or custom firmware that you choose. Are you on the iPad baseband or an old iPhone 3G baseband?

I can't even get my computer to recognize my phone is connected

The last thing I did while my phone was working was trying to install a jailbroken app from multiple sources (It wouldn't install from one source, so I tried another... and another...). It basically froze and I did a hard reset. Now all it does is start up, show the boot logo and show the "thinking gear" (dunno what else to call it). I've reset it multiple times, let it sit for over 30 mins, I can't get it to enter DFU mode (I've checked multiple times to make sure I'm doing it right) and my computer/itunes/RecBoot wont even recognize that the phone is connected. It's still getting power when I plug it in, but that seems to be the only "communication" I can make.

Any suggestions?

Had the same problem with a 3GS on 4.1 upgraded to 4.3.2 and jailbroken (unsuccessfully) with redsn0w 0.9.6rc14. After the redsn0w processing, it appeared that jb/unlock were successful but later on, the iPhone just had a "connect to iTunes" logo and there wasn't anything else that I could do. Tried all the insctructions I could find from the internet without success.

Finally I took the 3GS to the Apple Store knowing that the warranty was voided by the jb. True enough, I was told that the iPhone was jb'd and could not be restored (which of course I already knew). It would cost me over a couple of hundred $$ to get a replacement.

I left the store to think the situation over and after an hour decided to pay for my failed jb. Went back to the store and spoke with a Genius rep who fortunately gave me a reprieve by handing me a brand new replacement FOC.

In summary, I bricked my 3GS although I followed the jb instructions to the letter. It appears that yours is in the same situation. You may want to try your luck at an Apple Store too.

Have you tried redsnow 9.6rc8 for putting to dfu mode? I had the same issue and this helped me. You have to chose from redsnow choices "put to pwng dfu mode" and follow the instructions

Okay well for me i have to put it in DFU mode... but its in restore mode so when i try put it in DFU mode it comes up with "connectt to itunes" no matter how much i try, it comes up like after 5 seconds so i cant possibly hold it for 10... but anytime i try and download something andread the steps, it tells me to go to DFU mode which i cant :( help would be really nice. im not a computer wizz either so its even worse lol x

Help.

Hey guys,

I have an iPhone 4 on iOS 5 GM, without a baseband - this happened because my computer had shut down leaving me with the phone in recovery mode during a restore. I kicked the phone out of recovery mode using tiny umbrella. Yet because my phone was unlocked I dont have the official sim carrier.

Now my problems: 1) My home button doesnt always respond - i.e you have to click it twice to bring up the options.

2) I thought i'd try and do a stock restore from itunes so it would update my baseband, yet that fails at 60% through and puts the phone back into recovery mode.

3) Now im stuck with an iPhone that wont enter DFU mode so I cant even do a custom restore which I could do before! Also I could enter DFU mode without any problems whatsoever. Although now all of a sudden it doesnt want to!?

PLEASE HELP ME - I just need the phone to go into DFU mode, and NO it's not a user error. I've entered DFU mode countless amount of times on other idevices. Also the funny thing is, when i turn of the phone and follow the DFU method of redsnow/snowbreeze it leads me into Recovery Mode somehow (And this happens only by holding down the home button while it's still booting) So im really confused on whats going on with this phone.

Any help is appreciated.

Uuuug. There has to be a fix by now. It's been 4 years since original post.
