Here is my XS max. I tried to exchange and although the uneven issue was resolved, the exchange ended up having a terribly pink screen and shift. This is way better than my X, however.

So my issue isn’t really the display uniformity I guess. It’s more the color accuracy. I just googled and found out it’s an issue with iOS 12. My dark grays look green.

As far as my display uniformity, it’s definitely not perfect. The lower bottom is a bit brighter than the top however that doesn’t really bother me. What bothers me is grays looking green. I’m gonna wait and cross my fingers that the dot update fixes it.

hopefully you’re right. colors on my xsmax are dull and washed out compared to my 6s on iOS 11....

Is this issue only noticeable on grey backgrounds? Can someone notice this like in the default mail app or settings app where it’s white?

Thanks

For me it is. My XS Max also have a uniformity issue, it looks brighter/clearer on the bottom and for me it is mostly noticable in the settings or notes app for example. It also changes when you tilt the complete device and the colorshift kicks in.

This forum is a good test as there are a few pale colours across the page so it soon finds uniformity issues if you've got a bad display.

There will always been some shift when tilting with OLED. But it should look good when looking straight on.

Not seeing this colour issue on friends Max? He's on latest iOS.

Err my S8 is completely uniform. Its literally perfect as was my S7 and S6. Those pictures from the OP are really bad, i would take it back for a swap.
Completely uniform oled doesn't exist.
If you think you have one post picture of it.

Thats not fully uniform you can clearly see that upper part is more reddish than middle. Perfect uniform oled screen doesn't exist.
Looks uniform to me, viewing a photo of an OLED that has been uploaded to the Internet on my iPhone LCD.

No LCDs or OLEDs have perfect gray uniformity.

Don’t believe me?

Visit rtings.com and look at their reviews for tvs. They actually have a section called gray uniformity on all their reviews and none of them are uniform. Some are better than others. But there’s nothing faulty about it.

Probably everybody says their display is completely uniform with white and lighter gray images, but I'll ask anyway.
My X looks with full screen dark grey image and brightness set to 0 pretty much identical to what is in the first image on the page 1 of this thread. I can live with that, but I have noticed that this same bottom part darkness thing is actually present with lighter images too. I'm sure most peoples claim they cannot see that or don't care, even if they had my phone in the hands.

Anyway, those that are sensitive to white balance or brightness variation in different part of the screen, is this common issue with X? In my X I can see that with reasonable brightness that lower part of the image is slightly darker more yellow than upper part. Not bad but I can see it. My wife's X does seem to have uniform display but I was wondering if that was just a fluke? My phone's case also has popping/creaking problem so I'm still thinking what to do, but since mine is not from Apple Store (but authorized reseller) returning it for another new one is not possible, easily at least.
So I'm wondering how good chances I would have in case I managed to return it someway and buy another same model?
I have had similar problem with iPad 2018 and with that I had not luck when I tried another units, so I'm wondering if I should even bother, or just forget about it and live with that. Opinions?
And for those who possibly claim that do I have same problems with every display, the answer is no - I do have several different displays that I'm happy with uniformity (not all of them (or any) are completely even, but when it is not easily seen by me, I can live with them).

It's a lottery and has been for some time with most devices made by many manufacturers because their all using similar parts made by only a few factories. We hold Apple to a higher standard because of their pricing and because they used to be one of the best. Used to be.....

If you can return it then do it until your happy.

I pretty much guessed I did not win in panel lottery. I was just wondering how common this is, since I cannot change this very easily. Getting it replaced with brand new even once would be a stretch requiring a lot of arguing with dealer, so I would need to be sure panel like mine is very rare and most likely not occuring in new unit I get (or be even worse), because I would be stuck with that.

This is why I gave up on OLED panels and upgraded to the XR instead of the XS. My XR panel has none of these issues. This was what my previous X OLED looked like when showing dark grays. It also had a slight pinkish tint on the top right edge. It was also way too warm so I had to use color filters. Too many issues for my liking unfortunately. What’s worse was when I tried to get an exchange for it at the Apple Store, the genius staff told me that it was normal

Sorry but it's always a lottery. But if your unhappy with what you have....

I have had uniformity problems with LCD's too, so I thought it would not solve anything in my case if I get XR. Also I hate the idea not having Apple leather cases for XR and I liked the size of X better, as it is already so big that it is not so easy to carry with and anything bigger would be too big. Also I can use my X with one hand (well within limitations) but any bigger would need two hand always.

Anyway, I can easily live with uniformity problems with dark greys and brightness set to low or 0, but that same thing seems to be there all the time and it is there somewhat with full white image too, so that those parts that are darker in dark grey are the same with lighter images. It is just not so easy to see, and I'm sure most peoples don't even notice that. I also don't mind warm image, I like my displays warm and calibrated as close to D65 as possible, and during nights night shift with even warmer picture is even nicer in my opinion.

Yeah, I guess you are right but for a 'toy' costing almost 1k this is unacceptable. While I like Apple software (ecosystem) in these small devices and Apple TV (with PC's I still prefer Windows mostly) my _only_ reason to buy Apple has been high quality and they used to be that when I started buying them but later or device after device quality has been going down and by paying huge premium I'm not getting premium items anymore. I think next time I need a new phone, I need to look elsewhere also, while I generally hate Android for some reason, there obviously is much more competition and seem you can easily find the same or even better quality hardware costing much less. As much as I hate the idea, I also hate low quality items I have been getting lately for premium price.

As far this current device I have here is, I'm still considering my options but as I said, I could maybe (just maybe) get one chance to swap this to a new one but I would have no possibility to check it first and I would have to give my current back beforehand, with my luck I would not be surprised if I ended up with even worse than what I have now. So I'm in the verge of just suffering the loss and learn to live with what I have now.

I just saw some YouTube videos where several iPhone X units were side by side and they were compared from different angles and all of the had different colour shift when looking at angle. Some turned red, some blue, some green, and some other shade of those. Any consensus here about what type of colour shift from angle is the most optimal type for display used in this model? For example if I compare our two iPhone X, mine shifts red and other shifts blue. Also mine seems somewhat warmer even when looking it straight and it has some darker and more warm lower half screen, while other is pretty even, maybe just hint of shift but on the upper half.

And what causes such different colour shifts from angle? I would believe that they should be pretty constant when using same brand and model screens when just comparing angle shift (of course some individual colour differences happen often).

Actually I looked the two more carefully side by side and from many different angles, and I noticed that actually that better screen turn green when tilting screen more and mine goes blue. That is really more evident when they are side by side. Anyway, when tilting screen slowly mine goes to reddish and then blue, while my wife's goes only very slightly pinkish (almost not noticeable) and then greenish. They are supposed to be rainbow like that really? I have watched some OLED TV's displayed at local stores but I haven't noticed anything like that with them. Obviously screens used in these phones are nothing like the ones used in TV's, they actually act more like LCD TN screens in my opinion. Basically contrast ratio is impressive but otherwise these seem to be much worse that LCD's they use in many ways.

I found some old long thread here which I'm currently reading and I posted my findings with our phones there too.

I have owned at least 10 iphones since the 4S. Every single one has suffered from uniformity issues.

But in “real world” tests - there’s nothing to see.
Actually there is. I gave up on my iPhone X because the color temperature was just too different from my iPad and MacBook Pro. I used to do a lot of mobile editing in the Lightroom app on my previous iPhone 7 Plus and the colors would always come out different when I used the iPhone X. I tried exchanging the X but the replacement unit was pretty much the same thing. In addition when I’m watching videos at night, any dark shades of grey would just look a sickly sort of green on the X. This forced me to move over to the XR instead of the XS.

LCD may be for you. The X screen is fabulous and completely uniform for me. In all real world tests. Of course I turn off that gimmick TrueTone thing. That’s useless.
