Steam is one of the worst things for electronics.

Very true. Steam can penetrate past the seals and fog the camera area, cause Speaker issues and of course can trigger the moisture strip indicator, resulting in the iPhone being useless.

Hi all,

I was wondering about how real the waterproofing of the iPhone X is. Specifically, has anyone had any experience with taking the iPhone X into the shower? Is it alright in there? I have seen the iPhone X extreme water tests on YouTube but I wanted to know specifically whether the iPhone X is okay to take into the shower once or twice per day, every day? For example is there long term damage if you do so? Submerge it in water every day?

Also, in the event that there were to be damage to the iPhone X in the shower as a result of water, would Apple replace it in warranty? Shouldn't Apple help you outside warranty too, because they said that it is good with water? Asking this because of the uproar when the iPhone 7 was released. Apple had said that the iPhone 7 is waterproof but they will not be covering any water related damage to the iPhone 7 as part of warranty, which was very contradictory.

Also, does anyone know how the iPhone X fares when in contact with liquid shower gel, or bars of soap and other shower related items?

Thank you!

That’s really weird. If there is one thing I don’t get. Is people showering or taking a bath and bringing their idevices. Or sitting on the toilet and bringing their device with them.

Steam is one of the worst things for electronics.

That stuff you see in a warm shower or when you sit in a sauna is not steam. It’s simply water vapor. Think of it as warm fog.
Not only is real steam bad for electronics, it would kill you.

Steam is invisible and is at least 212 degrees in temperature. Look at a tea kettle for instance when the water is at a heavy boil. You’ll notice that the first 1/2 or so at the spout is clear. That is steam. Water in it’s gaseous state. After that the stuff coming out of the spout has cooled below 212 and is now water vapor in the air, I.e. hot or warm fog. :p

I shower with my phone and watch everyday and I have since my iPhone 6! Never had any issues. I don’t use it to communicate with people, I use it for music and podcasts. I simply put the phone into an old bath and body works candle container on the side of my tub. Has worked for years with no issues. I’ve also rinsed my phone a few times whenever my 4 year old cousin got a hold of it and I had sticky fingerprints all over the screen.

The amount of people who intentionally shower with their phones continues to baffle me. I mean... why?!

In my opinion, we live in a world where some allow their devices to possess them and they can't step away from digital reality, where personally, I could never live like that where I bring my phone in the shower with me, ever. My phone is a tool, not my life.

I don’t even take mine into the bathroom. I’m always amazed when I go into a public bathroom, say at the mall, and I hear someone talking on the phone will sitting on the toilet in a stall, sometimes even flushing. That’s just beyond weird to me.

I've submerged my iPhone 7 Plus into a pitcher of beer many times, like for 2 minutes. Still works like day 1.
A fitting result there would be for the screen to appear blurry, & a bug where the puke emoji would randomly appear when typing. :D

I've been taking my Samsung Android phone in the shower (rest it on the window sill) for more than a year now. I listen to music and audiobooks. No problems so far.

I would say go for it, but put a water-resistant barrier of some sort between the moisture and the phone. Maybe wrap it in a towel or something similar. Should be fine. (Assuming you don't need to look at the screen for video and you only need the audio).

I took my Iphone 8 plus in the gulf of thailand YOLO swimming one week ago!

Same thing with my 7plus last year during my vacation last year.

Its resistent but know the risk of taking your phone in the ocean, shower, etc, and don't cry if it fails or apple denies a warranty claim.

Mine went in with my in the Indian Ocean ;) Nice salty water, ok I did rinse it afterwards underneath the beach shower as well.

WOw that's cool. We should make a thread about posting pics while taking your phone in the ocean.

Good idea :) It is absolutely fine when you are a bit sensible...Like someone else said, I've also put mine in a Pint of Lager of a winging Fandroid once...The look on his face was hilarious, I invited him to put his phone in my drink...He didn't want to...And for full disclosure I did the same with my S7 Edge before as well...

Yeah, don't cry to Apple if you take the risk. I was fully aware of it with my 7 Plus.

He asked if it was safe, not for an amateur psych evaluation. I’m a hospital-based physician, and if my phone rings while I’m on call, I have to answer it whether I’m showering or at the pool. Doesn’t mean I have a device addiction.

In my personal experience (which is what I believe he asked for), I have answered the phone in the shower, spoken for a few minutes without the shower stream directly hitting the device, and my iPhone X still works perfectly fine. I try not to use it by the pool without drying my hands, because I’m concerned about exposing it to chlorine, but I have on occasions when I had no choice. Again, no problems.

Since water damage is not covered by the warranty, water exposure is AYOR. But occasional exposure to water and steam has not been a problem for me.

Yes, some people do. Then there are others like me, a hospital-based physician, who has to answer my phone when I’m on call even if I’m at the bathroom stall at a ballgame or a concert. Some people use devices for work purposes, which does not mean that they consume our lives. You don’t know why the OP was asking, but your point is certainly valid and insightful in a general sense. I just don’t think that the OP was asking for a life coach :/

I just can't gather the concept of why someone would want to take their iPhone in the shower with them. Regardless, the iPhone is water resistant, It's nearly an added layer protection, not a guarantee.

The phone is not water proof. It's water resistant. This means "Oops I got a little rain on it!" or "My hands are a little wet but I need to pick up my phone!". It definitely doesn't mean to try to intentionally soak it.

Agreed. I've always viewed it for accidents. I wouldn't intentionally take my phone into the shower/pool, etc.

To quote myself...
I always say that waterproof phones are like a bulletproof vest. It's great to have the protection for if you happen to get shot, but only an idiot gets themself shot on purpose because they are wearing one.

I can't quite wrap my head around it either.

There is a clear difference between having to answer your phone for work purposes near or in a shower versus having to use your iPhone because you want to check the latest Snapchat photo of your friend. So you seem conflating two different things. Regardless of why somebody chooses to use their iPhone in the shower, that's the risk that you take if you damage the phone with the water. On Page 1of this thread, I listed directly from Apple's website on what they recommend NOT to do with an iPhone near water or steam.

My post that you quoted was not responding to the OP, so please re-read the thread before commenting on something that was unrelated to the original post. Regardless, there are those who are not educated or choose to ignore The outcome of what happens when you subject your iPhone to water. Furthermore, water resistance is merely an added protection, it's never a guarantee and it's the risk you take if you choose to be ignorant about what happens when you mix water with electronics. Common sense prevents mistakes that can be avoided all together.
