Xs Max. I intend to keep it for at least 3 years. I usually get a new one every two years, but this time, because they're getting more and more expensive, I would like to keep my Xs Max for as long as possible. The only way I would upgrade before 3 years is if there is a significant change in technology and features.

For those with the iPhone X or newer devices, how long do you plan on holding onto your current device? What about future iPhone XR owners?

I plan on using my XS Max for at least 2-3 years. I am not really interested in 5G because 4G LTE works for me fine and I would rather wait a few generations to see 5G coverage refined. I don't need a faster processor or more RAM or a better camera.

I wanted to find out how a contemporary form factor, especially one that will be used for a bit, impacts your preferences.

I traded in my iPhone 6S Plus 128gb for an iPhone XS Max 256gb. I will likely use this for 2-3 years. I use my phone for everything, but also baby the hell out of the exterior - I try not to drop my phones - so even after 2 years, I imagine the phone will be worth $400 so I can get a deal on the XIIs MaxMax :)

nice 11.1.1 still on 11.2.1 just checked my uptime shows 290 days the most stable version I every had.

Yes sir, I wasn’t sure if I’d ever jailbreak, so I left that option open just in case. I would have much rather be on 11.2.1 or probably 11.3 (whichever is the last jailbreakable fw), but I missed that window. No issues on stability, and potential higher resale value, or wider consumer audience, if/when it ever comes to that

I *might* get a XR early next year but for now I'm pretty happy with my 6S, especially since it runs buttery smooth on iOS 12. Historically I've tended to hang onto my phones for as long as possible (I used a Motorola KRZR for nearly 5 years!), but if the XR has better battery life than the XS and XS Max I'll probably pull the trigger on it. Plus the A12 devices are insanely powerful so I can easily see the XR lasting 5 years or more, barring battery replacements or damage.

I cant see the point in upgrading every year any more. I went from a 7 to a XS and yes its a great phone amazing camera etc but in all honesty the 7 was still a great phone. I don't care about fashion with bezels or notches and I find phones to be just dull now. The new features in iOS 12 are good but nothing I have in the XS is a must have, even the OLED is a poor second to my OLED TV panel. I'll keep this phone as long as I can I expect. Phone tech has reached a plateau and is a juggling act between features and privacy really. I just cant get excited about phones any more and Face ID is for me not as reliable as touch ID, I guess we all vary.

I think a iPad is more enticing now, yet I'm still rocking my iPad Air 2. I'll upgrade this year but once again tablets have reached that point like Computers where they perform so well there is no point in upgrading all the time just for bragging rights. Also people quote the CPU specs in the iPhone for example, yes amazing but my weather app is never going to tax that, and I wont be editing 4K video on my phone anytime soon either and until I can plug my phone into a 27" display and it acts like a mac then its pointless really. So from Fusion to A12 bionic, both great CPU's and the iPhone 7 could have lasted me another year happily. Maybe even longer if it was still supported in iOS 14.

Who wants to bet on phone makers understanding how newer and faster phone technology will make people upgrade less and that's why prices on flagship phones have gone up so much. It made sense to upgrade before and you'd feel a difference in speed. Now 3 year old phones are still blazing fast and have really good cameras.
I used to be an ever 2 year upgrader because I liked design changes over the S cycles. I switched to every year with the 7+ from the 6+. Then got an X for the last year. Just returned the Max I had for two years and the X feels every bit as capable as the max did.
I dont understand the ritual yearly upgraders that really just go through the motions and upgrade from an x - xs. Like its going to kill them to wait another year and have the phone paid off and keep it instead of turning it in and having a 50$ payment for the rest of your life. I love new tech but its gotten to a point where year old up to 3 year old phones still feel fresh and speedy. I think the less people that upgrade will be better for us all as phone manufacturers will really have to innovate and give us something more instead of incremental upgrades nowadays.

I love new tech too, and this is the first year I haven’t upgraded. X to Xs is barely any difference, so I opted for the Apple Watch instead since it’s a more substantial upgrade. Waiting till next year

My X came on 11.1.1, which I jailbroke... But jumped to 11.3.1 as soon as possible, because of the issue with the screen becoming unresponsive in the cold. Fortunately 11.3.1 can be jailbroken as well. Are you not having those stupid cold issues on 11.1.1?

Isn't the question more - how long do you think it will be usable (OLED lifespan, updates and slowness, battery health)?

I was on a yearly upgrade cycle from the 4 up until the X last year. I still have my X and will get my battery replaced before December 31st, since my battery health is at 90%. I wanted so badly to upgrade to the XS Max, as I miss my Plus size phones, but after going over how much my bill would increase by I said I can wait until next year. I can’t justify paying an extra $35 a month for a new phone. I ended up upgrading my Series 2 to Series 4, and that felt like a much needed upgrade. I bought 3 new Caseology cases for less than $6 and put a new screen protector on my phone, so now it feels like I upgraded.

Look at Apples iPhone history for reference. Given Apple’s hardware and quality standards, the iPhone can easily last five years, and with continual iOS support, that’s at least four years with software. Theoretically, anyone who purchased the iPhone XS that does not want to upgrade on annual basis, could be potentially be using their phone until 2022 (Assuming no Hardware faults occur).

In addition, Apple is using Samsung’s OLED panels, and their panels are very good, so I would expect at least 4/5 years of life span from those alone.

Its Really not worth it to spend more on something so small while your x is an amazing phone still and will be for years. We've reached that point that phones now shouldnt start feeling like its aging up to 5 years like an actual computer.

5+ years easy. if you replace the battery I dont see why these phones won't be very good 5 years from now.

Fellow Xs Max owner here. 2-3 years as well. I've averaged 1.5 years for my last few phones (6+, 6s+, 8+) and I'm really going to try to do 2-3 years (or more). I use my phone more than ever. Love reading on it.

I am one that usually upgrades annually, but I’m getting to the point where I don’t necessarily think it’s necessary for me to do this. Mainly because as much as I do appreciate new tech, smart phones have generally become numb to me in terms of amount of features that they offer, being I don’t always utilize and take advantage of everything. I personally appreciate more personal products like the Apple Watch to upgrade annually then I do the iPhone.

But somehow I get caught in the tech euphoria and upgrade to the iPhone, speaking of which, just received my new XS Max yesterday:

Haha! Congrats and welcome to the club. Out of all the phones I've owned (6+, 6s+, 8+) - this phone is my favorite. Reading on it is so nice. Battery life is good, I'm sure it will improve as iOS 12 ages. My wife and I were convinced we'd keep our 8+ phones another year and ... yep, just like you... lol.

I definitely will be keeping my X until September 2019 and upgrade my watch every 2-3 years. I’ll probably stay on a 2 year cycle for my phone from here on out, unless Apple come out with a new form factor.

That sounds sweet. Although might I suggest the discounted $29 battery replacement for your husband's 6s in the interim so it won't be plagued by performance throttling down the line? Unless that's what you're hoping would happen to force his hand

Haha, that's a pretty good thought! But we actually were a part of the battery recall, so he got a free battery replacement not too long ago.

Got my X in June this year on the Apple Upgrade Program.

I can upgrade next April but I’m gonna try and hold out till the new models are out

At these prices, at least 2 years and probably 3-4 years. I only upgraded my iPhone 8 Plus to a 512 GB iPhone XS Max due to my entire lossless music collection fitting on it.

I must say that I hate FaceID.

Until Apple and Qualcomm come to an agreement.
That is never gonna happen. Why?

Because:
1. Apple has expedited their own modem development and they might use/license patents from Intel
2. Apple can even continue to use Intel modems in the foreseeable future as they are expected to gain parity with Qualcomm ones by next year.
3. Apple will never want to give a certain percentage of iPhone selling price to Qualcomm just because a punny little Qualcomm modem in it.
